Sherk & Franca test positive for steroids

Both Sean Sherk and Hermes Franca have tested positive for steroids at UFC 73. UFC has tested for drugs at every show, beginning in 2001 with sanctioning in New Jersey.

I don't see how Sherk is not stripped here, though I do not care much, as I don't like the 155 class, and would rather UFC had not brought it back.

I suspect one reason some PRIDE fighters on new UFC contracts have struggled is because they were on drugs in Japan, where there was no testing, and now they have to use less drugs to avoid getting caught, fined, and suspended.

Yes the pride fighters have looked lethargic in general. When I saw Vanderlai I was wondering if he was fighting in a different weight class...

I'm disappointed in Sherk, but not at all suprised. When a professional athlete trains & compete at that level, they like every advantage/edge they can get (many times not legal). I'm sure there are a slew of MMA fighters on the sauce. Like I said, no suprise there.

I am sick to death of all the steroid scandals and sincerely hope it doesn't become a major problem in MMA. It looks like even golfers are taking steriods now according to golfing legend Gary Player.

I assume more athletes are using than aren't. To think otherwise is naive, imo. These two just happened to get caught.

What interestes me is the why and when of fighters being caught for steroids.

We can assume all fighters are using the same drug regimens, and the same evasive procedures. Why are some occasionally caught, but not the vast majority?

What are you thinking, Savage? Expand on your thought here, please. Have a theory?

Personally I'd like to see who runs the labs.

Waterbed, 155 lb fighters might juice-up because steroids help minimize muscular breakdown & recovery time. Not all steroids are used to bulk-up. Sherk was pinched for traces of Nandrolone (probably Deca-Durabolin).

DD, you're on the money.

This is quite an embarrassment - and also funny I have to admit as the (before the fight) Franca was so cocky. A clean rematch is in order - hopefully Sherk will learn to protect his jaw from knees next time around. He can only get away with that so many times.

They have popped marathon runners for roids. I remember reading the training routine of clean or most likely clean world class runners in the 70's and the mileage they did pales in comparison to what world class runners do now. It's the same reason why 155 atheletes juice. By the way Sherk was a tanked 155.

I think its the washout phase. Either he mistimed it or the ability to trace nanograms in his urine sample have gotten better. I remember failing an insurance pee test because I had second hand smoke blown in my face in a car ride to a casino. I had to wait a week and take the test again....

White is Right - it isn't so much the mileage difference - it actually
dropped for Americans and Europeans, one reason they fell off the map
compared to Arabs and E Africans, never mind the drugs. However, the
story is the recovery that athletes enjoy when on 'roids. Guys who can't
handle hard intervals for more than 2 days straight become able to handle
them for a week or two at a time. Guys who couldn't handle long hard
runs for more than a couple of days are out there with their foot on the
pedal for 5 days straight. There are people who do have the ability to do
this without drugs, but they are few and far between. This transfers to
fighting, really any sport where endurance is needed, never mind any
added strength. With so many doped athletes it's getting hard to put a
finger on who's doing what and where and so on.

I wonder what kind of ruckus we'd have seen if it had been only Sherk
who had offered up a positive sample? Disappointing all the same, but I
can't help but think that Sherk and others notice the one-sided drug
enforcement in baseball, boxing etc and think they could get victimized
by it, so what the hell! I chuckle at those who wave off claims of bias,
despite US track officials having to admit that for many years they
routinely shelved positive tests secured from "naturals" like Carl Lewis.

I was abit disappointed about this news when I first heard it. Sherk is my favorite light weight by far. He has tremendous natural stregnth. I just don't see him needing steroids. I am sure he has been tested in the past either before or after his fights with Matt Hughes, and St. Pierre. He matched both of them with stregnth about as good as a naturally smaller man could.
Who knows? I am hoping that he wins his appeal and is allowed to continue fighting as he is without a doubt head and shoulders above all other lightweights in the world.
