CMU's Kelly is still an optimist

He vows to continue to build program after his star junior runner, Seymour, is indicted.

If it isn't tough enough trying to turn around the Central Michigan program, coach Brian Kelly has even bigger obstacles.

His best running back, junior Jerry Seymour, a Mid-American Conference first-team selection, and senior running back Spencer Lewis were indicted this week on charges of second-degree murder in the June 25, 2004, death of DeMarcus Graham, 26, of Flint.

If the Chippewas had had Seymour last Friday, they might have beaten Indiana in their opener instead of losing, 20-13. But Kelly is building a program, not a season.

Kelly remains upbeat and said the focus should be on Saturday's MAC opener at Miami (Ohio). He was hoping Seymour could be reinstated from his suspension and play in that game.

"This is extremely disappointing," Kelly said. "But we will move on, and we will continue to build our program. We have 105 guys on this football team, and we have a lot of guys who are down. We've got some work to do. But when it's time to kick off against Miami, we'll get them ready to play."

but at least he only missed one game!
