We can only hope!

Cuban says Floyd in MMA is no stunt

There is no doubt that Floyd Mayweather could become one of the world's great mixed martial arts fighters.

The world's best boxer was basically bred to fight.

But whether he will become anything more than an expensive publicity stunt in MMA is impossible to answer at this stage.

Mayweather, who said after his Dec. 8 stoppage of Ricky Hatton that he plans to take a long vacation, is now mulling entering MMA. Mayweather hasn't spoken publicly about his intentions, but his best friend, Leonard Ellerbe, insists he's serious.

And Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban, who developed a friendship with Mayweather when both were contestants on ABC's Dancing with the Stars, said Mayweather's notoriety would be a boon to the sport.

Cuban, who owns a fledgling MMA promotional company, HDNet Fights, is convinced Mayweather's stature in the sports world would extend to MMA.

I doubt that Mayweather will ever fight in MMA. But if he does he'll be spoon fed opponents that he can beat easily. He'll have a career of 2-3 exhibition fights to draw attention to Cuban's HDNet Fights, for which Cuban will pay dearly.

It's funny how many of these sports writers and media jock sniffers think MMA needs guys like Mayweather to legitimize MMA. MMA has long since passed the 'fad' stage, and is a sport in it's own right, with it's own stars.

This is like saying that Michael Jordan's stature in basketball would extend to baseball.

I hope he does enter MMA because even a average "spoon-fed" wrestler as you put it would easily take this guy down and submit him or pound him out. It will have to be more than a spoon-fed wrestler, it will have to be a fixed fight for him to have any success in MMA unless he trains for a couple of years specifically for the sport.

To my knowledge, "Prettymouth" Mayweather has zero wrestling or submission/ground experience. In my estimation, he'd be destroyed by even a C level MMA fighter. He'd need to train MT, BJJ & wrestling extensively for 12+ months to compete on the pro MMA level. MMA certainly doesn't "need" him, but it'd be nice to see him be exposed/demolished in the cage!

I sincerly doubt Mayweather will change sports and fight in the MMA, and even if he did his appearance would likely be a short trial.

The question of how a skilled boxer would fair against an MMA fighter has already been answered many times in the past and those that continue to either deride MMA or scoff at it are ignorant or perhaps foolish. A great wrestler is not automatically a great MMA fighter; a great Karate, Tae Kwon Do, or Judo fighter is not automatically a great MMA fighter, and neither is a great kickboxer automatically great MMA fighter. So why should a great boxer be automatically different?

MMA fighting is unique in so much that the sport demands a high level of skill IN MANY DISCIPLINES for a combatant to be successfull. As an example, Vitali Klitshko was a world class kickboxer, and is a world class boxer, yet he would likely fair poorly against someone like Couture or Gonzaga who would tactically outmatch him and wrestle him to the ground quite quickly.

Ask yourself the following questions: can a professional basketball player walk off the court and play with volleyballers at the same level? Can a track star play football in the NFL? Can a tennis star hit a baseball like a MLB player? Without extensive training, the answers are emphatically NO. If they could they most certaily already would have!

It is often observed and commented on how poorly MMA fighters box and how sloppy and sometimes amateurish MMA fighters look boxing. Often those are fair comments. But just because they box poorly between themselves does not mean that MMA fighters would box a boxer at all. What has always happened is the MMA fighter switches to wrestling, and then switches to grappling, and the fight usually ends quickly with the boxer overwhelmed and broken and beat.

Mayweather, and Calzaghe for the sake of the arguement it doesn't really matter, would likely learn to throw knees without much effort and they already know how to use their elbows, but they would never be able to learn how to kick effectively and grappling they may as well forget because it isn't learned in 3 easy lessons.

For Mayweather to hurt his opponent he would have to stop moving for a moment and, at that moment - as always happens when boxer meets MMA fighter - when his feet stop, the skilled MMA fighter clinches and drags or flips the boxer to the ground, and the fight is essentially over.

Chuck Liddel, a kickboxer by pedigree, had a very successfull run in the MMA because he spent YEARS learning to avoid take-downs. Why is anyone in their right frame of mind supposed to believe that Mayweather, with only his hands, is to be successfull WITHOUT any take-down training?

It would be very amusing to watch a braggart like Mayweather be devastatingly humiliated in the MMA ring fighting a world class mixed martial artist, but we all know we shall never be given the joy and satisfaction of watching that happen.

Mayweather will never fight any real opponents in MMA. At best he will fight the type of opponents Kimbo Slice and Bob Sapp have been fed in MMA. It will take about 1 year for Mayweather to be a competent wrestler. Also many dirty boxing techniques are horrible boxing techniques. So as he learns one form of fighting his other skills will erode. This is just for publicity.
