Just a heads up. Tonight at 7:00ET Jesse Lumsden will his CFL debut against Calgary. Jesse will reportedly be used mainly as a Kick Returner this game. This is part of Hamilton's game where they badly need help since Hugh Smith (black) has been horrible and Suter (white) who looked pretty good was injured early in the season. Since last year's KR Craig Yeast (black) has been moved to receiver this year, Hamilton has been to only team in the CFL without a credible main KR.

I know it's a huge pain in the ass to catch a CFL game on TV down south (and not usually worth the effort on Sat. night) but I figured some of you might be interested since there was so much talk on this site about Jesse Lumsden.Edited by: Ta Waki Mumba

Do you know if any cable networks here carry CFL games, like say Fox Sports Network or ESPN 2, for example? I'd imagine dish owners could watch these games but I'm not sure about us cable guys. I'd love to watch some CFL just to see what it looks like to have a white man run with the football.

Well that was a hard game to watch, turnovers like you wouldn't believe.

Lumsden had four returns for eighty yards so nothing special tonight but TSN did go out of their way to keep track of him this game.

just an update...Lumsden got his first carry last week against Edmonton. actually, he got 3 carries and he went for 21 yards. also had a nice kick return.

more interesting to note, however, is Hamilton, the team Lumsden now plays for, has just traded away its starting tailback, troy davis. that leaves Lumsden as the only TB on the roster.

so unless the Tiger-Cats make some more roster moves, he should be getting a long look in what little is left of the season. and the rest of us can get a look at what the NFL missed whenever they play on TV.

To make the trade even more interesting for the Caste Football crowd. WR Brock Ralph was sent to Hamilton as part of this trade and he should grow into a starting role as a result.

just an update. i caught Lumsden's debut as a starting CFL tailback, and he showed flashes of brilliance. however, it was an unusual set of circumstances in which he played and i'll mention them before i talk about his performance:

1) he'd only been with the team for, i believe, 10 days. so he had a very limited number of plays to work from. the defense knew this, and keyed in on it quickly.
2) part of the trade that put him in position to start sent one of Hamilton's starting o-line packing. additionally, their most gifted o-lineman went down with injury on the first series of the game.

ok, here's the scouting report, as i saw it. first, the pros. he's a very impressive physical specimen to look at. very large frame, so he can put on weight if he wishes to be even more of a power back. still looks to have some baby fat (ie., he's not super cut at this point), so he can lean up and go qucik-twitch to be more of a speed back if that's the route he chooses. is an upright runner with a low-kneed stride. (i know a lot of you guys don't like player comparisons, but they say a picture is worth a thousand words, so a moving picture must be even better of a description.) he runs VERY much like shaun alexander of the Seahawks, but he possesses a very different skill set. unlike alexander and most upright runners, he really runs over people. looks to deliver more blows rather than taking them. very unusual for this type of runner. shows good vision, and likes to cutback. shows tremendous speed when he gets to the edge, outruns players who have the angle. can return kicks.

now the cons. again, unlike alexander he is very unpolished in the passing game. shows good hands, but needs a lot of work in running routes. wasn't asked to do much receiving in college. unclear if he can block. was on the sidelines for virtually all of his team's passing plays. likely he needs a lot of work, but physical running style lends credibility to willingness to learn. defense keyed on the fact that every time he was on the field, he got the rock. not his fault due to limited time with his play book, but didn't break many runs after his first carry went for 8 yards.

overall, looks to be VERY raw in his development, but has the physical package and the unteachable gifts (vision, falling forward after contact, size, and speed) to become a special back. needs to immerse himself in his playbook after his late signing before he will truly be able to give a fair account of himself on the field.

Lumsden scored his first professional touchdown tonight in another loss by the terrible Tiger-cats.

The fact of "Great White Running Back" Jesse Lumsden only stands as evidence of the socialization element as paramount in success in American pro sport. Jesse's dad was a good, if unspectacular RB in the CFL in the 70s & 80s. He clearly had a strong commitment and understanding of the game which he instilled in his boy, who likely benefitted from years or hard molding and pressure (and no doubt countless scream-sessions after lack-luster youth-league games)...finally "casting" this big, fast rushing machine that we see. I don't see any reason to believe that Lumsden is some physical anomaly likeJason Sehornor Matt Jones or something...just a reasonably impressive specimen who falls well within the top end of standard deviation.

In Canada, football falls somewhere around or behind rugby in terms of priority for athletic talent channeling...I can't speak to the US, but here in Canada we got more than a handfullof 6'2", 230 lb kids with athleticism...they all play Hockey or LacrosseorRugby, or they just slip off the radar from lack of 'sport socialization' by their indifferent middle-class families. In all of Canada during the 80s and 90s, how many athlete-families do you think were really pushing their boys into becoming Footballtail-backsthe way Neil Lumsden pushed Jesse? Maybe a handful. I'd suggest there are more minority families in, say, any randomly selected single neighbourhood in Georgia, furiously funneling their boys this way.Canadian boysdon't get into Hockey out of 'White Flight' as some provocateur such as Sailer or Entine might imply.Of the Canadian-born Blacks I have met, more than a few played high-stakes, competitive hockey, not football,as youths...against Whites, Asians, Aboriginals, East-Indians, etc...and if they were watching doors at night-clubs or tarring roofs when I met them, they obviously didn't have 'the right stuff'...like any other unexceptional White kid.

If the Eastern Europeans (especially the Slavs) ever figure out how to bust through the deeply-entrenched institutions of the NFL (these being,IMO,EXPONENTIALLY more resistant than the NBA was to change) the L will be flooded with a lot more Olshankys...not to mention junior Woronins, Borzovs, Alexeevs, Bryzgins, Karelins, Seberles, etc...

i think you are right about the Eastern Euros, although i have no idea about any of the other stuff you talked about.

as for Lumsden, the guy can PLAY. he's a special talent, regardless of whether his dad was a psycho or not.

I hope that Jerve didn't mean it in a negative way that Lum's dad 'cast' him, unless you are also to say that the fathers of people like Tiger Woods, the Williams sisters, Roy Jones Jr, Floyd Mayweather Jr, Julio Cesar Chavez, and countless other parents funneled THEIR children into some type of athletic, or hell, musical, dramatic, or whatever field they chose at an early age.

I'm willing to bet that Tiger appreciates the fact his dad 'cast' him into golf when he was three years old.

Hamilton plays Ottawa again this week so we'll get the chance to see the wonderful sight of two white tailbacks starting against each other.
Ahh... nothing kicks the caste system in the nuts like the sight of a black QB handing off the ball to a white RB play after play

I'm sure it's nice to watch, but what happens in the CFL has no effect on the caste system in the U.S. Every tailback in the CFL could be white and it wouldn't effect the recruiting policies of colleges here in the least, or the attitude of American football fans and the media. Americans are oblivious to most of what is going on inside their country and everything that takes place outside of it. I just read of a poll today that found that 20% of Americans think the sun revolves around the earth. I'll bet at least that many think Canadians live in igloos and use dogsleds to get around.

Of course I live an igloo, it keeps my beer cold!

But in order to break the caste system we must first stop it from spreading. God knows Canada is full of spineless wannabe-Americans (cough-cough... Toronto) who blindly worship all things NFL, NBA and NCAA. A small victory is still a victory remember.

I watched Lumsden last week. He was good and fun to watch. But it was even more fun to listen to the announcers. They praised him constantly, talked about his future and at halftime spent several minutes reviewing his 1st half and complimenting him throughout the game. Very refreshing!

As to psycho dads, I read this in SI. When Andre Agassi was 10 years old he entered a tournament in Florida. He won 2nd place and later, after he was in the parking lot, his dad took the trophy from him and threw it in the garbage. His dad said 2nd place meant nothing.

Game is on! Lumsden just got a 40+ yard rush to the 4 which led to a Brock Ralph TD.

I still think the smart money is on Ottawa though.

Jesse had 180 yds total to-night from scrimmage including a 75 yard screen pass he took to the house in Hamilton's 40 to 32 win. Blocked well and made a great special team play stopping Ottawa speedster Jason Armstead when it looked like Armstead was returning a punt for a touchdown.

Looks like I spoke too soon Hamilton takes it and Jesse Lumsden is the difference with 180 Yards from scrimmidge and a TD. He also wins the games 'Glenn's Gladiator' award.

Very impressive game. Damn I wish I hadn't fallen asleep in the 3rd quarter (missed the TD)

I don't know... damn it's hard to find single game CFL stats

I believe Ranek had about 70 yards rushing in that game and went over the thousand yard mark for the season.

This is the second time they've started against each other. So the official score is Ranek 1, Lumsden 1
smiley17.gif

Couple more things on Josh "Little Ball of Hate" Ranek... this season he's 2nd in the league in Yards from Scrimmage (1567) and 5th in Rushing. Kerry Joseph, his QB is 6th in the league and has an excellent chance to get 1000 yards himself.

No. I should have thought to mention that.

On a side note both Ranek and Joseph were on a sports talk show last year and the subject of race came up. Both players showed clear knowledge (and disgust) of the caste system and IIRC Joseph went so far as say that the only reason Josh Ranek was not in the NFL was because he was white.Edited by: Ta Waki Mumba
