The Chiefs signed former San Diego State "punt god" Matt Araiza to a contract today. This is very good news. If you recall, Araiza was (falsely) accused of rape a couple of years back. After the charges were dismissed (see CF post here) there was a civil suit to deal with. That was finally tossed and after wasting a few years he can now kick in the league. Nice to see him get a second chance. Current Chiefs punter Tommy Townsend will be allowed to hit the market and cash in on his success. Maybe the Steelers will pick him up now that they've stopped experimenting with diversity at the position??

I agree 100%. Araiza is a phenom I was looking forward to watch when he was drafted by the Bills. Kind of reminded me of when the Cowboys drafted the USC kicker with 4.4 speed. But Araiza‘s a great athlete and amazing punter. Also kicked for SDSU.

Smart move by the Chiefs, shows why they remain the premier organization in the league.

Far less than he deserved but at least Drue Tranquill got a three year deal with the league's most prominent team. But according to Weenieworld it was the best he could do. Would be great to see both Drue and Chenal starting this season along with Karlaftis:

Chiefs agreed to terms with LB Drue Tranquill on a three-year, $19 million contract.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports the deal includes $13 million guaranteed. Lured away from the Chargers with a one-year deal last spring, Tranquill notched 4.5 sacks as a situational pass rusher. He was extremely efficient on a per-snap basis. Headed into his age-29 campaign, this is about as good of a contract as Tranquill could have hoped for.

Looks like he now has around the 17th highest LB salary, similar to fellow lunch pail guys Jewell, Anzalone, and Singleton. It could be better, but could be worse.

Yeah I think that is a White discount contract. I thought he had a good chance at a 4 yr/$30mln but, I suppose a White 4th rounder doesn't get the CJ Mosley treatment.

It’s a truckload of money regardless.
Yeah, for you and me but not for the NFL. The salary cap is expected to be around $255 million this season, or close to an average salary of $5 million. Tranquill will get $6.3 million per year over three years. It's a significant White discount contract.

Slightly better payday than last time. Gotta agree though. Still White Man’s discount and another W for Kansas City. They know what they are doing with the overachievers they have stockpiled on Defense.

Good contract for Kansas City and although figures not the highest, good guaranteed money I guess and good spot for him personally to stay after a successful season for him and the Chiefs.

Relatively white friendly team as well to be fair.

LB Willie Gay signed with the Saints, leaving Drue Tranquill and Leo Chenal at the top of the depth chart along with Nick Bolton. The Chiefs often have just two LBs on the field so we'll have to see how things shake out but it's certainly a plus that Gay is gone.

Just saw this here. Posted something similar in the NFL news thread. Although rugby stars trying out for NFL teams is nothing new, previously most were real longshots. With this though it might be nice to see a trend. Not sure if I'm going to hold my breath however.

We all here know that many of them have the talent to play the game. Regardless the league would make it easier for the black rugby players than the white guys. They can't let the white rugby stars their image of the league. :(

He added: “Although this decision may come as a surprise, I would like to reiterate that this does not necessarily mean I am retiring from rugby, but rather at this age and stage of my life, I am excited to explore a unique challenge that has the potential to diversify my skillset”

How many upside Americans in the NFL have enough command of the English language to write that sentence?

My market is 0 @ 2

Indeeed, just came here to post the ESPN link.

He's an actual super star and VERY young at that, so he sets a precedent. If NFL actually got some talented rugby players early, we could see an influx of white, extremely athletic and tough dudes.
Gets a decent deal considering he's never played football before.

Chiefs signed rugby star Louis Rees-Zammit to a three-year contract with some guaranteed money and a signing bonus.
It’s quite the deal for someone who has never played organized football. The Chiefs inked Rees-Zammit, 23, to the deal after he spent ten weeks training at IMG Academy and ran a 4.43 40-yard dash. ESPN’s Adam Tiecher said the Chiefs “will look at Rees-Zammit at running back and perhaps wide receiver,” though “his biggest immediate impact could come on special teams and particularly as a return specialist under the NFL’s new kickoff format.” That Rees-Zammit didn’t sign a one-year flier deal with KC likely means he’ll see immediate playing time in 2024, perhaps as a gadget player. He’s worth monitoring in deeper fantasy formats.

I like this deal. Seems like the Chiefs are looking at giving him at least a legitimate shot.

We could potentially have or six white running backs with potential to get rushing attempts any given week.

That is leagues better than it has been in a long, long time.

Should also be an interesting draft for the Chiefs. They are high on McConkey if he's still around at the end of round 1 and Ricky Pearsall if he's available at the end of round 2. That and the rumblings of drafting "local" product Schrader. If they drafted all three, or even two of three I think that hell might freeze over. We'd have to craft a new name for Reid.

How about this story:

Louis Rees-Zammit, who's leaving rugby to pursue an NFL career, has been clocked faster than Tyreek Hill

Another link and a video: https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/n...thats-FASTER-Dolphins-WRs-speed-23-24mph.html

That try was unreal, and to do it against a real squad like Fiji makes it even better.

If somehow this kid becomes the Luka of American football it would be amazing.

Opening up the game to all sorts of white kids from other countries and hopefully spurring a renaissance back home

Here’s a nice video on Zammitt. It looks like he has pretty good hands already.
