John Hadl, who was QB for the high powered Chargers in the 1960s and early 70s, passed away yesterday.
Besides his accomplishments as a QB (he was 3rd on the all-time passing yards list when he retired), it was interesting to find out that he played halfback at Kansas before being converted to a QB, and also lead the NCAA in punting his sophomore year.
The Chargers drafted him as a QB, while the Lions also drafted him to be a RB who could throw, like Paul Hourning.
So obviously, he was a great, all around athlete.
During his career as a Charger, he threw long passes to Lance Alworth and Gary Garrison, an incredilbe duo at wide receiver.
