Browns coach Romeo Crennel indicated Monday he will examine ways to shake his woeful defense out of its slumber heading into Sunday's visit from the Ravens.
We're going to look at everything and consider everything, then we'll decide what we think is best," Crennel said. "We'll take a look at that on Wednesday."
Here are some reasons why Crennel needs to do something - anything - fast:
The defense has slipped to 31st in the NFL with an average of 430.7 yards allowed. To put that in perspective, the Patriots, whom the Browns visit after this week, are No. 1 in the NFL with an average of 207 yards allowed.
The Browns' run defense is also 31st in the NFL with an average of 176.3 yards allowed. Against the Raiders, they surrendered 186 yards rushing, including 121 to LaMont Jordan.
The Browns have given up an NFL-high 11 touchdown passes and are the only team already in double digits in that category. That's only nine shy of the 20 they gave up all last season.
They are proving vulnerable to the big play: Against Oakland, they gave up passes of 41, 39, 27, 24 and 20 yards. They gave up runs of 20, 21 and 25 yards.
"The big deal is just to improve the defense, period - pass coverage and run stopping," Crennel said.
Defense all-black. It seems that a number of all-black defenses (NY Giants, U. of Louisville)are terrible at preventing the other team from scoring. Maybe they should try something different, like playing some white players who can stop the run and pass. The black "affletes" sure aren't getting the job done.
