Happy New Year to one and all.
As the indoor season gets under way in the northern hemisphere and U.S. particularly, the outdoor season opens in a flourish down here a bit earlier than usual for 2024.
January 13th (this coming Saturday) sees a meet called the Illawarra Track Challenge about 75 kms south of where I live. So I have plans to take a ride down there to watch. It'll be Rohan Browning's first run of the new season and there'll be a few decent sprinters there.
World athletics has raised the importance of 60m event as of this season so Browning and others will do 60m and 100m. Maybe we'll start getting some decent 60m times down here because till now we haven't run them seriously.
Shirvington's 6.52 (indoors) is our national record but Browning does have a still wind 6.55 outdoor time to his credit so who knows what may happen in good conditions?
Also, 11.25 (twice, run with a -0.5 and a 0.1 in years 2021 and 2022) shows Ella Connolly is a very decent sprinter who feels she hasn't quite reached her potential so has moved states to train with Browning and coach Murphy to get up to speed for this olympic year. I guess she, like others, will be thinking this could be their last hurrah before getting on with life in general and leaving track (and I think she'd like to push Zoe Hobbs when Zoe comes over here later in the season).

well, Browning has started with a 6.52 to equal Shirvington's 60m record but it was outside and had 0.5mps too much wind. Never mind, it was a good initial run for his 2024 season.
New squad member Ella Connolly started her 100m season with a legal 11.27 - nice! She'll get a decent PB this season.
But the upset of the meet was Josh Azzopardi just outdipping Browning in the 100m - it had a 4 mps wind (they were swirling about so that some heats were legal while others had too much wind) but it was a great race for two guys with Olympic dreams and 14 weeks till nationals.
Azzopardi 10.054 V Browning 10.056

Rohan Browning is gonna run alot of 200 meters races this year. I just hope he doesn't give up the 100 as he is closer to elite
status at that distance than he will ever be over 200 meters. The 200 meters however could help his speed endurance in the 100
meters as long as he doesn't give up that event.

in the ACT open and under 20 champs today Sebastion Sultana (18 and 4 months) won the under 20s with a 10.14 (2.2). What can he do legally as the season progresses?
in the Open age division we had some great results too, and legal. Very good conditions today
Finals (+1.9)
1 # 166 Despard, Jacob 96 Tasmania-AUS 10.15 (10.141)
2 # 125 Colgan, Alexander 04 Victoria-AUS 10.15 (10.142)
3 # 15 Azzopardi, Joshua 99 New South Wales-AUS 10.15 (10.144)
4 # 559 Penny, Jake 96 Victoria-AUS 10.18
5 # 617 Rodrigues Chico, 98 Victoria-AUS 10.21
6 # 278 Hartmann, Alexand 93 Queensland-AUS 10.27
7 # 354 Kamara, Ismail Du 97 New South Wales-SLE 10.28
8 # 625 Rowe, Jackson 03 New South Wales-AUS 10.30
9 # 254 Hale, Jack 98 Tasmania-AUS 10.35 (from 2nd final)

10 # 374 King, Leonard 97 New South Wales-AUS 10.42
Alexander Colgan is just 20 this month.
Jack Hale is gone and finished for all money - he won't even make the relay team this year in all probability.

In the women's 100m, Torrie Lewis (19 just 2 weeks ago) set a new Australian record 0f 11.10 (1.6). It will be great to watch her this season too

Hale is still running very slow times....10.35 +1.9w Unless he has a physical issue or mental issue that can be worked on he is finished as a top Aussie sprinter....

Torrie Lewis is half white?

I’ve been watching a lot of 1 mile races and 800m races lately. They are actually quite fun to watch because they can have a lot of build up to dramatic finishes. I was curious so I checked and in the 800m, we have 5 guys in the top 10 currently for the year. In the 1 mile 9 out of the top 10 are White! Of course times are going to get faster as the year goes on but this is a pretty cool way to start the season.

On a side note, I believe the 1500m is what they run in the Olympics. In that distance we have 8 out of the top 10 so far this year!

Sprintstar here's an article on Torrie, she is a very mixed-raced person.

and the ever sliding (once wunderkind) Jack Hale runs 10.60 (+0.90) for 4th place in New Zealand. He's not even the fastest guy in his small home state of Tasmania now.

I think Kerr now feels totally confident he can beat Ingebrigtsen any time he's in top form. So let's see what happens this time

Kalen Walker is a junior and to run a p.b. of 10.09 wind legal in his first outdoor race of 2024 is HUGE! Epic performance and he held
his form very nicely. Very impressed with the kid. It goes to show that hard work and patience can bring great rewards in the long run!

So pumped for outdoors. Thanks for the video and article.

There is a track meet in South Africa tommorow. Emile Erasmus will be in the 200. I've never seen that. We have a few of
our guys in the 100 meters including Armand Van Der Walt. Also the 17 year old man child Werner Bezuidenhout.

Keep us updated, because I do find it ironic that two white men are the fastest in the u20 and u18 division where blacks typically peak, and especially in the African division

nice to see that our Australian men's under 20 4 x 100m team just ran a 39.12 record to place 7th all time and push the Germans back a place by .01.
Some here will not like that 2 of the team are black Australians of African origin - so be it, but that's the future of sprints as the times continue to improve.. Seb Sultana is the fastest of the group and they all run for the one state club.

How did they even find these blacks, they're barely any percentage of our population, it makes no sense, I've seen actual Aussies here run faster then Africans on average

you know Australia does have its own "blacks", don't you ....... they over achieve in many sports because of their innate talent and drive.
And we are a country of imported peoples whether we be of European, Asian or African or whatever stock.
"They" (whoever they are) don't FIND them .... talent rises to the surface.
These guys all belong to the one Melbourne club so it'll be a hothouse of sprinting goodness - so bring it on!

About time we broke our 4 x 100m national record from 1995 that put us in 8th place in the world.
All the sprinters we've hoped in recently seem unable to put down a good relay time or perform well on the world stage..... and they've certainly had their chances
