hey guys, im watching a replay of the Texas 4A Div. 2 championship game between Highland Park and LT cavaliers. Does anyone know the differences in classes and divisions? does div. 1 mean a better division than division 2? also, why do they diferentiate between "classes" and "divisions". is there a difference other than school size? please help if you're familiar with the reasonings.

thanks

There were three teams that went to the playoffs from each 4a district last year. 4a is made up of schools with roughly 900 to 1600 or so enrollment. It's the second largest classification in Texas. Nowadays, out of the three teams from each district to qualify for the playoffs the school with the largest enrollment goes to the d1 bracket even if they finished third in district. The other two go to the d2 bracket. So there are ten state champs 1a through 5a. Then there are the private schools and 6-man. Private schools aren't as competitive as public schools in Texas although they have gotten stronger over the years.

so there's only two different division's? if "class" is differentiated by ebrollment, what basis is used for determining which division a team plays in?

thanks so much for the info man.

Also, keeep in mind that whites only make up about 36% of the schoolchildren in Texas. But many state champs are mostly or all - white teams. That may change because blacks and browns don't fear the Klan in Texas suburbs and small towns as they once did and are moving to these places when they have the money or when the government forces public housing upon the citizenry. Still, the players from the teams these white kids beat are recruited while the victors are not. I mentioned to the athletic director I coached under last year that it was odd that when the white kids win it's said to be because of great coaching. When the black kids win it's because the have "athletes". I've seen mostly black schools go nowhere for years around here while their lazy, dumb, players sign d1 scholarships and the locals all say they don't win because of bad coaching. Well, smart kids tend to be easier to teach how to block, tackle, tuck the football, stay onsides, etc.

There are five classifications, 1a through 5a. Each classification has two divisions only during the playoffs. Three teams from each regional district go to the playoffs. Teams compete in districts with teams from their same classification. Out of the teams that go to the playoffs, the team from the school with the largest enrollment goes to the d1 bracket. They aren't always the best team from the district. District champs can go to either D1 or D2 brackets. I hope that helps.

It's a stupid system that Texas implemented about 10 or 15 years ago. The reason was that in 5A there were some schools in the growing suburbs that had 5,000 or more students (Plano, for example) and they were winning many of the championships. The other 5A schools that had 2,000 students were complaining that it wasn't fair, so now you have the current system. The divisions within the class mean nothing regarding who is the better team. There have been teams that won 5A Div 1 Championships with 3 losses on the season at the same time that an undefeated (and higher ranked) team won the Div 2 Championship.
