Average MPS Teacher Compensation Tops $100k/year
[Milwaukee, Wisconsin] MacIver News Service â€" For the first time in history, the average annual compensation for a teacher in the Milwaukee Public School system will exceed $100,000.

That staggering figure was revealed last night at a meeting of the MPS School Board.

The average salary for an MPS teacher is $56,500. When fringe benefits are factored in, the annual compensation will be $100,005 in 2011.

MacIver's Bill Osmulski has more in this video report.

Our Democrats have fled the state, according to today's paper. This will delay any vote on the issue and is a tidy way for them to both wash their hands of this and escape harassment by state employed lunatics. The entitled mob is still "peaceful" but it's still an ugly scene. I'd call it an anti-tea party.

My two cents worth...

I've been teaching in a title 1, poor, predominately black school for the last 10 years. A thankless (the stereotypes ARE TRUE)job. I grossed 44K last year. It should have been several thousand dollars more but we had unpaid furlough days. This school year, 2010-2011, we have 10. I live in Georgia where there is NO SUCH THING as a teachers union. As far a benefits go I donate $200+ monthly to TRS, teachers retirement service. Fortunately I retired from the army so I receive no health benefits or services from the state of Georgia. If I did my monthly check would beabout four to fivehundred dollars shorter. There is NO FREE HEALTH CARE for public servants in Georgia.

Isn't it interesting that teacher pay is the issue that Republicans have decided to make their as their battle cry. It's not reducing mititary spending, or ending too big to fail bailouts, ending foreign aid, ending costly diversity programs, or ending illegal immigration. Nope, none of those get mentioned. The Republicans have decided that teachers are our problem and you all fell for it. Again. Sad, sad, repeated story of ignorance. But Ignorance is Strength.

I don't think the Wisconsin legislature can do anything about most of those issues. Those are mostly federal issues. What the Wisconsin govt can do is balance it's own budget. I know when a company I work for has to cut back it's going to effect me. It should be the same for govt workers. I don't know why you are muddying the water with this other stuff. And it's not just the saintly teachers that are getting their benefits cut. It's many levels of govt worker. Their benefits in many cases are lavish and they are guarenteed by the taxpayer, and that is just wrong.

HA HA you are accusing anti-union peope of being communist! The "right" to collective bargain! Yes ANOTHER "civil" right not in the Constitution.

In the practical instition of Communism workers don't have rights. They can't strike or unite. Just look at the Ukranians in the Holodomor. They had no choices. That is communism. I think you are confused.

I've already discussed my "lavish" benefits. Good grief do you really think they are "lavish?"

And as if the Republican Party in just a state "thing" and not actually national organization. The states can do a whole lot such as welfare, illegal immigration, corporate taxes, huge spending programs pushed by big businesses, post secondary education spending, public transportation etc.

Teachers and pay have become easy targets partially because everyone now knows a few homeschoolers and thinks, "How can it be that a few hundred dollars per year will produce a better quality product than the 10x more that we spend producing a shoddy product in the government schools?"

I guess that's what our forefathers envisioned for us. They must love the idea that white kids have to avoid their multicultural schools and stay inside the house for safety reasons and for serenity reasons. It's funny how hard our kind will fight ourselves to bring a quick end to a lost dream instead of fighting that hard to save and fix what was going horribly wrong. I have no problem with homeschools as a practical choice, but think of it as the American ideal - I do not.

One of the things I detest about the protest is how obviously staged they are, with bussed in "rent-a-mobs" and other typical government union tactics.  Also, the actions by the Governor are across-the-board, aimed at ALL public sector unions who have far too much power.  Of course, they simply parade out the teachers, not the SEIU members.  Which is going to get more sympathy from the public?
<div> </div>
<div>Here Kaptain is going all-out to stand up for the teachers.  Commendable.  But the teachers are not the problem.  The union is, and the education beauracracy is.  I, for one, think teachers are underpaid, but with the average cost to taxpayers of around $13,000 for each student, how much of that goes to the teachers?  Not much.  But the teachers are made the centerpoint of the demonstrations, to tug at heartstrings, and even seasoned Caste Football members fall for it.</div>

It doesn't "tug at my heartstrings" - I am a teacher. If teachers are underpaid, then why is the union a problem? That makes no sense. That is basically all the union does - negotiate wages. What the down-side if wages are already low?

The whole bill and the rethoric (mostly negative) is centered around teachers. That's why we are talking about them. Other educational cost such as property cost are not affected in the bill and, therefore, do not need to be discussed. This bill doesn't defund schools - it cuts teacher pay and renders their union useless. Other school cost are not addressed. Edited by: Kaptain

Jesse Jackson shows up to support the people who ALWAYS back him on every issue. I'm expecting the leadership of La Raza and NAMBLA to show up next.

http://www.wkbt.com/Global/story.asp?S=14058089

Associated Press - February 18, 2011 1:55 PM ET

MADISON, Wis. (AP) - The Rev. Jesse Jackson has urged thousands of protesters in the Wisconsin Capitol to continue their stand against a sweeping anti-union bill that state Republicans are pushing.

Jackson made an unannounced appearance at the protests Friday afternoon. Protesters rushed to shake his hand or high-five him, and many shouted, "Thank you, Jesse."

Jackson told the protesters they were fighting for a just cause. He told them to hold strong to their principles and continue fighting to kill the bill. Then he led the masses in a rendition of "We Shall Overcome." (snip)

<DIV id=article__ad>
<DIV =article_>The primary reason the White House and the Democrats are fighting the movement to end collective bargaining is that dues will no longer be mandatory for teachers in the unions once they can no longer bargain. Therefore there will no massive slush fund for the Democrats. In 2010 the following for the two major teachers unions in the U.S. were massive moneybags for the left.

The National Education Association

Gross receipts: $337 Million (88% Dues)

Political Contributions and Lobbying$50.4 Million (99% to Democrats)

Contributions, gifts and grants $89.0 Million (100% Liberal Organization)

American Federation of Teachers

Gross receipts $225 Million (90% Dues)

Political Contributions and Lobbying $18.8 Million (99% to Democrats)

Contributions, gifts and grants $3.6Million (100% Liberal Organizations)

Total political contributions and Lobbying: $ 69.2 Million

Contribution to Liberal causes $92.6 Million

Source: www.teachersunionsexposed.com/unions.cfm

What is not tabulated is thevalue of theorganizing, get out the vote and polling activity of the so-called voluntary union members which in terms of value may well exceed another $150 million.

This is just the Teachers Unions, AFSCME, the largest public sector union, in the 2010 election cycle spent $88 million on political contributions and untold millions in the value of it's members political activities.

The Democrats cannot afford to lose this base and this will be an all out war.

Just an interesting note -

David Duke in his 1992 run for Presidency was in a debate with a young snot-nosed Scott Walker (current WI governor). Walker attempted to remove David Duke's name from the ballot - in fact I believe he and the Republican party did have that plan until a court order put Duke's name back on. Duke throughly defeated Scott Walker in the debate. I believe you can still catch it on youtube.

Interestingly enough, David Duke, who is probably the foremost white nationalist supports increasing teacher pay. In his 1992 governatoral debate he specifically mentions increasing teacher pay. He's a true conservative - not a neocon GOP talking point mouthpiece. Edited by: Kaptain

Whoopee. Millions of dollars for national organization is nothing in this trillion dollar age. In practical terms I give about 80 dollars per monthly check for my teacher's union. Money well spent. Do I not have a right to decide for myself if I want to support my union? Why should you or anybody else think it is your business?

43,000 dollars in benefits? That's one heck of healthcare plan. Must include weekly massages by Jen Steger. The numbers sound fishy and so does the organization. Care to break down the benefits numbers?

Kaptain being a teacher is a noble profession and no doubt needed for our young folk. But the difference in quality between LAUSD here in Los Angeles vs the quality of teachers in charter and private schools is no contest. The success and scholarships awarded to those students in the private/charter schools is also no contest. These students include "all colors of the rainbow." With this success a common theme is present NO UNIONS. This whole battle is not created by the Republicans as you assert, its the democrats with their socialists/communists/liberal allies, there in Wisconsin.

Also, as Run Stuffing LB so eloquently pointed out, once you have Jesse Jackson on a side, its pretty clear to see who the bad/wrong/dumb/socialists guys are.

And yes, the union teachers are worthless, at least here in Los Angeles, salary and benefits are LAVISH compared to the more successful and competent teachers in the private/charter schools. Just accept it! At least here in La LA Land.

I don't know about 1992, but today Wisconsin's teachers, educators, administrators, counsellors etc. are paid extremely well!

The salaries and benefits of individual teachers can be found on the internet. A matter of public record.

I just checked on one of my nieces who teaches social studies to seventh graders. She has her students dress in African garb sampling authentic tribal dishes during Negro Worship month.
smiley36.gif

What did the state shell out to her last year? An amount just shy of 80 grand. Not bad for a 30 year old chick.

Oh, but her working conditions are horrible! She must teach 15 or so kids in facilities almost 20 years old.

Oh well, every year during her 3 month summer break she recovers by taking a cruise or traveling to foreign countries.

No, she would never dream of driving a lowly Escort.

She is fortunate she does not teach in the private sector in our state. Parochial school teachers are not paid anywhere near as well.

I'm not really ripping her. She knows she is sitting pretty and will retire at a young age collecting big bucks. She doesn't pretend to be a victim.

I hear you Menelik. I teach at the college level and would have to more than double my income to make what those folks do in Madison. I don't belong to any union and I pay quite a bit for health insurance through the state. I also pay into TRS every month, so what I net is significantly less than what I gross.

You mean the neoconned israeli first high-jacked tea-party? The one that supposedly held their noses and voted for the extremely anti-white John McCain? You know the same jokers on this thread teacher hating. Who cares? That's the inner party faction of the Republican Party. The last time they held power they polled in the teens. Go ahead and counter protest.

I'll stick with real tea party started by Ron Paul - the guy you seem to hate. I'll stick with David Duke and his opinions also. You'll never see me on the side of a sell out like Scott Walker.

I asked for a breakdown of benefits on your claim of more than 100,000 dollars and you told everyone to go "look on the internet" and then told a story about your niece. This is circular arguement with repeated lines and antidotal stories. Supply what was asked or drop your arguement.

I'm one of the top paid teachers in my district and I make about $65,000 dollars gross. I work in the summer to add about 3,000 more. I'm not sure what district your niece works in to gross 80,000 at a young age - maybe she is just married to rich guy or has inheritance. I can tell you I don't have money to go on vacation. I'm 40 and have been on a plane twice in my life. I'm still paying student loans.

Does it really matter what teachers make if there is no qualified (preferably white) teachers to take their place?

BTW, your niece teaching about African garb is not anything but her choice - the choice you or anybody else could chose not to make if you got an education and became a teacher. You seem to think they are rich - so have at it.

Today, in accordance with Teaching Orwell's 1984, I taught about the torture of the Nuremburg trials, thought crime/hate crime, show trials, and the falseness of the Holocaust as I have for at least five years now. No one has stopped me in anyway.

So why do Unions support Democrats? Dah, look at what the Republicans do to unions. It has nothing to do with liberalism.

Would you accept figures from the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction?

Type a name into the search engine and see for yourself.

Hey Kaptain attempt to stick with subject of this important thread, rather than project your worldly knowledge on other members here. Such as me hating Ron Pual, I don't ! Since when is a District Administrator a teacher?

The search engine covers a broad spectrum. It includes administrators, teachers, supes, principals and various other employees.

If you know any teachers, type in their names and you will find their salaries and benefits listed as well.

My point is that Wisconsin's governmental employees, especially those in the upper echelons make a lot of cash. A huge burden on the tax payers which cannot be sustained.

If salaries and bennies are not addressed Walker will be forced to cut positions.

Walker won in a landslide. He has a reputation for fiscal responsibility. He campaigned on balancing the budget and trimming the government.

Most Wisconsinites expect him to cut the fat. Walker is not singling out teachers. The entire beauracracy needs to be trimmed and he will do it!

Right Bart. If I was the governor, I would give those cowardly dem state Tuesday to show up. If they don't start handing out pink slips for the last hired across the board involving union state workers. Until the budget is balanced, those remaining can keep their lavish state paid jobs. Simple
