Gansey latches on with NBA champions
West Virginia shooting guard Mike Gansey was undoubtedly downtrodden after being ignored in the NBA draft on June 28.

That feeling was replaced with euphoria when the 2001 Olmsted Falls High School graduate agreed to a two-year contract with the world champion Miami Heat, an NBA source confirmed Monday.

The 6-foot-4, 205-pounder leaves this week and will play with the Heat's summer-league entry in the Orlando summer league. He agreed to a two-year deal worth $1.1 million, much of which is guaranteed ($412,718 in 2006-07 and $687,456 in 2007-08).

About 10 teams called Gansey after he wasn't drafted. It probably worked out better for him after not being picked early in the second round. The Heat didn't have a draft pick this season and appear to be high on Gansey's potential.

His West Virginia teammate, 6-11 center Kevin Pittsnogle, will also play for the Heat in the summer league. Pittsnogle wasn't drafted, either. Both players worked out for the Cavaliers before the draft.

Many Cleveland fans wondered why the Cavaliers took Nigerian forward Ejike Ugboaja with the 55th pick instead of Gansey. Cavaliers general manager Danny Ferry said he didn't want three rookies on their roster this season. They selected Michigan State shooting guard Shannon Brown in the first round and Texas point guard Daniel Gibson in the second.

Ugboaja will not play for the Cavaliers this season.
