We've all noticed that swimming is mostly White. Now the conventional explanation for this from the Steve Sailer and Jon Entine types is that this is that Black people supposedly sink like rocks, while White people supposedly float because of higher body fat percentages and less dense bones.

But I discovered a funny thing in my researching rambles, namely that coaches and swimmers think that's a bunch of crap. Competitive White swimmers will also readily sink, because they are so lean and muscular. And there HAVE been a few good Black swimmers.

So how do we explain White dominance of swimming? Probably it comes back to upper-body strength and endurance, the same as in throwing and lifting. Or maybe Blacks are just scared of water...

nah, gotta be the strength and endurance.

White_Savage, you know the only reason blacks do not dominate swimming is because blacks aren't interested in swimming. And besides, how many large bodies of water have you seen inside major cities in these United StateS? On top of that, it takes too much equipment to learn to swim, you have to have trunks, after all, and access to a pool. I'm sure if the government sponsored the building of more inner city pools, gave every black youth a pair of suitable trunks, and organized midnight swim meets, blacks would dominate swimming easily.

A black named Anthony Nesty (sp) from Surinam (different name now) won
an Olympic gold medal in swimming in 1988. He edged out Matt
Biondi in the 100m butterfly by .01. He also took bronze in 1992 in the
same event. Of course he was trained in Florida...by whites.
He is the only black to have ever won a medal in an
Olympic swimming event in any stroke. As far as why blacks
aren't "dominating" swimming, who knows? There is no
shortage of pools in America's cities for them to train in.
Personally I think it has a little to do with physiology (although
Nesty's perfromance puts a dent in that theory) and more to do with
work ethic. To be a world class swimmer one has to work and work
and work...from a very early age. But could the blacks take over
if they had a Tiger Woods type to lead the way? I don't
think they would take over but there would definately be more of them
to compete against. I don't expect to see this in my lifetime
though. One more thing; in last year's Olympic trials a
black from Stanford named Sabir Muhammad made the final of the
men's 100m free. He finished last. It's interesting that
these black swimmers are/were both competitive in the shorter
distances.

Poacher:
Still, swimming requires alot of the upper-body, cardio, etc. I think that's the explanation. Even the shorter distances in swimming are somewhat endurance events.

In the 1920s, Chicago was the capitol of the swimming world, Swimmers like Buster Crabb and Johnny Weisnuller trained here and became olympians. Living in a large city is not a disadvantage, but an advantage if you want to succeed. To succeed at swimming you often have to get up early in the morning, swim many laps in a cold pool. Think of how many Blacks are willing to do this.
