As I'm sure you have all heard, Flutie was released by San Diego. With the exeption of Fran Tarketon, in my opinion there is no quarterback that has been as fun to watch. A guy who could run, pass, scramble, and win games. The biggest shame is that we never got to see him half as much as we should have. During the media push over the last decade for more "athletic" quarterbacks, Doug Flutie was repeatedly summoned to the bench for inexplicable reasons. Instead we had to watch hack jobs like Kordell Stewart, Randle Cunningham, and the current crop of quarterbacks who can run, lead the league in sacks, and can't pass. At 42? he is still a better quarterback than any of those ever were. Here's to hoping I get to see him play again with some team. Anybody else feel that Flutie is a caste victim in the NFL?

Well, let's see:

Flutie career QB rating: 76.4

Completion %: 54.7%

Average, Per Game:

Pass attempts 24.6

TD Pass: .98

INT: .78

YDS: 168.80

Rush attempts: 3.8

TD Rush: .11

YD Rush: 18.79

Michael Vick career QB rating: 76.9

Completion %: 53.6%

Average, Per Game:

Pass att: 22.2

TD Pass: .83

INT: .60

YDS: 153.93

Rush att: 7.0

TD Rush: .30

YD Rush: 51.69

Their career QB rating and completion % is a wash.

Flutie averages 1.09 TD per game, passing and rushing; Vick averages 1.13.

Flutie averages 187.59 yds pg, passing & rushing; Vick averages 205.62.

What is a .04% higher TD ratio and an extra 18 yards per game worth?

A starting job at QB in the NFL, millions of dollars in contracts,
endorsements, corporate sponsorship, and god-like adulation.

Vick is a QB GOD, "extremely athletic", the new NFL QB prototype.

Yet, the too short, weak armed, pine riding Flutie posts similar
numbers as this stud on a per game basis, and has done so throughout
his career.

I'd say he is a victim of the caste system, for sure.

Welcome to the Michael Vick experience, Mr. Flutie.

Good stats WS. A stat I'd also like to see is the number of sacks the so called 'athletic" quarterbacks take in comparison tothe scrambling white quarterbacks. Also remember that flutie has played for bad offenses in the NFL and made them winners. A comparison of college stats or CFL wouldn't even be close.

I was trying to find stats comparing how many games these two sat out
because of injury. I don't know how many games Flutie was out, as a
starter, compared to Vick because of injury but I'd be willing to bet
those stats would favor Flutie, too.

I don't think you necessarily have to be quick to play qb as long as
you make accurate throws, and show good decision making. He was first
with the Bears so thats pretty much suicide for any quarterback.
Did Doug even play for like 7 or maybe 8 years in the
NFL? When he played a full season he did show promise. I'd
hate to see this position to end up like the rb situtation, but it's
slowly becoming that way. The modern NFL will do everything in it's
power to have a black qb win a Super Bowl. Look at the fuss they
made the Championship game about McNabb and Vick. If race isnt suppose
to matter why did they mention it was the first time 2 black QBs faced
eachother in a game like that. Players like Doug Flutie will be
obsolete for more athletic, but less productive running style
quarterbacks. Everytime I watched Vick play I haven't been impressed at
all.

Actually, a black QB has already won the Super Bowl: Doug Williams, with the Washington Redskins, won it in SB XXII.

A funny note about our last Super Bowl: prior to the game I heard a
number of media pundits say this was only the second SB in NFL history
to feature a black QB. It took a few days before they got their head
out of their collective and began talking about Steve McNair and the
Tennessee Titans in in SB XXXIV.

I agree, if race doesn't matter why is this brought up every time a
black makes it to a conference championship game, or to a SB? Are we
going to have listen to this same old line in the 5th, 6th, and 10th
Super Bowls in which a black QB plays the game?

Maybe we should start keeping track of how many Super Bowl teams feature a white running back.

I agree with that last statement of yours white shogun. I will definitely miss Doug Flutie. He was a Caste System victim no doubt, and he was the underdog that everyone I know loved. He was way better than he'll ever get credit for.

Flutie getting disrespected has more to do with his height. Altough I will say if he were a short black QB he would have had it a little easier but not much. No matter what your skin color its rough to earn the respect of coaches and scouts when your a 5'10 QB. No matter what his height was Doug Flutie was a great QB.

I agree, whiteCB. Flutie was disrespected for his lack of height long before the era of the black quarterback began.
