Should have started this thread earlier but what the hey...

Phelps is back. He just won the 400 IM in world record time (4:05.25) beating another beast, Ryan Lochte, who swam a 4:06.08. Lochte was under the old record of 4:06.22 as well. I feel bad for Lochte. In any other era he would be the man.

Phelps could lose the 200IM. Lochte is a beast. He is playing Merritt to Phelps' Wariner right now.

The great black hope/ Tiger Woods of swimming just finished an ignominious third in the 100M free.

Katie Hoff and Natalie Coughlin are awesome.

The fastest American swimmer in history is now black, just like in track.

I tried to warn you Poacher. Your juvenile attitude about Jones would be funny if the situation were not a big problem.

White Americans are getting passed in every sport.

He's the fastest...for now.

Jones is not a big problem. There are 13 different events being contested at the swimming trials. Jones won the shortest event in the easiest stroke. Big whoop. Only thing is that now we'll have to hear about him until he takes bronze (if he's lucky) at the games.

"Juvenile?" Your shrill defeatism every time a white athlete loses a race is what is juvenile.

I don't care about women's sports, but Dara Torres is a drug using cheater. She manages to pass all the tests, so the longer she goes without getting caught, the more I'm open to the idea that Tyson Gay could be cheating too.

Another WR for Phelps.

Torres reminds me of Regina Jacobs the black middle distance runner from a few years ago who started running American record times in the mile at age 39. According to Wikipedia she tested positive in 2003 and received a 4 year ban.

Torres has had a long career in swimming. Why she would risk casting a cloud of suspicion over it with such a brazen performance I don't know. Kind of shameless really.

Meanwhile, CNNSI has a picture of the hot dog eating contest winner on the their front page. What's a world record when there are hot dogs to be eaten?Edited by: Poacher

haven't seen the results..are you serious? holy crap!

21.47! Five swimmers under 22.00 and four of them white including the ageless Gary Hall Jr. Let's see how long it takes our friends in the MSM to post the news.

Phelps just beat Ian Crocker in the 100m fly. He went under 51 seconds.

Katie Hoff just swam the 800 in 8:20, only four seconds off of Janet Evans' Everestish 8:16 way back in 1989.

Men's 1500m still to come.

I've been talking to some people who know swimming and they said they think that Lochte was better than Phelps in a lot of ways.

All the MSM accounts of the trials I've read so far have ignored Jones' failure to qualify for any individual events. They seem to all be taking the angle of Gary Hall Jr. not making the team.

Torres was the fastest qualifier for the women's 50 free. ESPN's Pat Forde wrote a decent article about Torres and possible PED use.

She has said that she wants to be an "open book" when it comes to PEDs. If that is true then she should volunteer to take a polygraph.

Another record for the cheater.

A year older, another second faster. By age 50 she will be as fast as the men.

Her husband is a doctor. I'm sure they have collaborated on some kind of new drugs.

Congrats to Peter Vanderkaay for his 14:45 win in the 1500. A fast time but still 12 seconds off of Grant Hackett's monster record.

As far as Torres is concerned, her hubris is making a mockery of the sport. I feel really bad for the girl who got bumped and robbed of her dream to be in the Olmpics.

Swim trials are over. All in all a pretty good show. USA swimming has put together another juggernaut.Edited by: Poacher

Quit hating. There is no proof of that so far. I admire what she has accomplished and she gets drug tested all the time.

Not any more. Cullen held the record for about 24 hours and then it got broken in the finals and two white americans finshed in front of Davis.

Sorry, but you are in serious denial. Dara Torres is the most sophisticated and advanced drug user in US Olympic sports right now. It will take several years to figure out what she is doing.

Before making her second comeback, this current drug fueled comeback, she spent several months with her husband studying drug testing and doing blood work.

Even with the drugs she decided to drop the 100 meters because it was too much for her 41 year old body.

I am not in denial about anything because there is no proof that she is a user. I am not saying that proof may or may not come out someday but she is tested often(voluntarily) I might add and so far she is clean. Do you want her to test positive someday for drug use so you can be proven right? I bet you do.

Interesting article about her new found prowess.

AHA, Neb. - As Olympic stories go, it is an exclamation mark on an achievement that will spend the next two months being bent into a question mark.

Knowing that fact, Dara Torres spent part of Friday night shrugging off the doubt that is bound to settle on her chiseled shoulders over the next two months. At 41 years old and having qualified for her fifth Olympic team, the marble-physiqued Torres now owns potentially the most intriguing feel-good story line this side of Michael Phelps.

And with it, she also has materialized as the Olympian most likely to bear the brunt of suspicious success in the post-BALCO era.

At 41, she has done what most would have termed impossible since retiring (for the second time, no less) after the 2000 games: bear a child, get diagnosed with asthma, go through recent knee and shoulder surgeries, and arrive at the U.S. Olympic swimming trials posting faster times than in her mid-20s. Yet, when she touched a wall in the 100-meter freestyle Friday night, she squinted at digits that seemed downright impossible. Torres qualified for the Olympic team by edging out a 25-year-old Natalie Coughlin by five one hundredths of a second - 53.78 to 53.83 - in an event in which Coughlin holds the American record.

In an instant, we were given the light and dark side of an Olympic moon - with Torres becoming the symbol of warring beliefs. On one hand you had a baby-toting mother overcoming the longest of odds, providing a rallying cry for the middle aged and giving a booster shot to the ageless spirit of competition. On the other, you had the sinister raised eyebrow of unproven doping assumptions. (snip)

Nevada- I read the article posted above and she has had her her blood and urine tested 12-15 times since March and she has tested clean so far. Maybe she is light years ahead of the current technology on catching drug cheats but until proven otherwise, she's clean, I admire her accomplishments at 41 and hope she medals at the Olympics. I may have blinders on about her but damn it's no fun to be suspicous all the time about these athletes.
