I'm not gonna lie, I watched the Spurs dismantle the Lakers on
NBA TV more than the Oklahoma/ USC game! That was fun.
This is one of the best white-friendly teams to root for this year
for two reasons. One, they're title contenders. And two, they
have four white players, Ginobili, Nesterovic, Barry, and the
very impressive rookie, Beno Udrih, that are valuable
contributors- not just players who are merely on the roster, and
who may or may not actually play. Unlike the Sonics, who have
a bunch of white players but only two that get extended
minutes (Ridnour and Radmanovic). It's great to see white
players on all these rosters, but it's much greater to see them
as important players on the team.
Utah is the white-friendliest team, with Kirilenko, Giricek, Okur,
Harpring, Lopez, and Borchardt. But they're playing horribly
right now. They're not title contenders yet, unfortunately.
With four of the last five championships won by LA or Detroit,
we need white-friendly teams like San Antonio and Utah to win
some championships. If NBA GM's and coaches feel like they
can go all the way with a generous amount of whites on their
roster, perhaps that'll escalate the Euro Influx even further.
White players will always be considered too "soft" until they are
meaningful contributors to championship teams. At the very
least, we need more teams like the last Bulls three-peat
(96-98.) They had plenty of whites like Toni Kukoc, Steve Kerr,
Luc Longley, etc. In fact, their roster was about half-white, if
I'm not mistaken.
Some Finals MVP Awards would be great. I think that would be
better than the regular season MVP, because it would reflect
the value that a white player would have for a championship
team, not just some good regular season team (like, oh I don't
know, Dallas or Sacramento.) We don't necessarily need a
Rick Barry or Pete Maravich to score 30 points a game
(although that would be nice) but we do need some of our
white stars to become white champs. This hasn't happened in
quite awhile. The last white NBA Finals MVP was Larry Bird in
'86. He's the only white Finals MVP since Bill Walton in '77!
Conversely, between 69-77, whites received four MVP awards
(West, Havlicek, Barry, and Walton). That's four out of nine.
We need that today!
