Saturday night, a private, almost all white high school, defeated an all black public school in an inter-conference battle in the Liberty Bowl Kickoff Classic! The white team, Memphis University School beat the black team, Melrose High School, 17-14. These teams are usually at or near the top in each of their respective districts and conferences. In fact, MUS has won 23 of their last 25 games, and their 3rd straight Kickoff Classic. A white caller to Sports 56 in Memphis said there shouldn't be seperate conferences for public and private schools in Tennessee, so I thought I better look it up. Funny that the radio hosts said nothing about the game but that it was a good one. This was the first game of the season for both teams. Some highlights for MUS include Senior RB getting 52 yards on 9 carries. QB Michael Park had 21 rushing yards including 2 TDs and a 2 point conversion. MUS picked off 2 passes from the Melrose QB, and Senior LB John Stokes got 5 unassisted tackles and a sack in the game. I could give you all the stats, but will stop there. The reason I post this is not because it is a rare event for a white team to beat a black team in high school football, but for the fact that these kids never get any press. MUS sends a few players to the pros, but they pale in comparison to teams like Melrose, who are clearly worse teams. These white players should be recruited just as much as anyone but sadly, the Caste System currently in place prevents this from occuring in most cases. I hope that any of you who read this will report on games like this in the future so as to further educate those who might be seeing the site for the first time and don't realize that college recruiting unfairly favors blacks, who are often not as good as their ignored white competition. I actually got to see the game Saturday night.
MUS had the game in hand early but let Melrose back in it had to come from behind to win it. After a long drive MUS scored with about 3:00 to play to go up 17-14. The Melrose return man made a great return but he started showboating down the sideline and a sophomore from MUS dragged him down on the 15 yard line. A couple sacks/ penalties and the game was over.

In the local media the MUS victory was attributed to discipline and teamwork because Melrose had much more talent and athleticism. And ironically, many of the victorious MUS seniors will be starring on the intramural fields of their respective colleges next year in flag football games while the more athletic Melrose stars will be suiting up for some of our favorite colleges and universities.

Sad truth there Triad! I was at a private school game last night in the Delta and was talking to my Uncle about Chad McMahan, a local private school product who started the last 4 seasons as a Safety for UT Martin. My Uncle just started talking about how these colleges won't recruit white players at all, let alone the skill positions. I discussed this site with him for a while and where the discrimination comes from and how it has affected the game of football. I was really surprised to hear him bring up the topic, as he usually doesn't get worked up over much of anything. Anyway, he must have been talking about it with some of the other men at that school at some point in the recent past, or he wouldn't have been so upset about it all. I hope others are starting to wake up to the discrimination as well.
