Shaq assists as police arrest man accused of assaulting gay couple
MIAMI BEACH (AP) â€â€￾ Shaquille O'Neal has been credited with an assist away from the basketball court, following a suspect who allegedly assaulted a gay couple and alerting police.
The 7-foot-1 Miami Heat center, who is in the process of becoming a Miami Beach reserve officer, was driving on South Beach about 3 a.m. Sunday.
That's when he saw the man, riding as a passenger in a silver Honda, yell antigay slurs at the couple, said Bobby Hernandez, spokesman for the Miami Beach Police Department.
The man then got out of the car and threw a bottle, hitting one of the pedestrians, who was not seriously hurt. The suspect got back in the car and it sped off, but O'Neal followed.
"He flagged down the Miami Beach officer on duty there, and the officer was able to apprehend the subject," Hernandez said.
Michael Gonzalez, 18, was arrested on charges of aggravated assault and assault with a deadly weapon. A phone number for Gonzalez could not be located and it was not known if he has an attorney. The Honda's driver was not charged.
O'Neal, who hopes to be a police chief or county sheriff one day, was already being fitted for his Miami Beach police uniform before the incident.
"For this incident, I don't want to be credited as an individual who does police work," O'Neal said in a statement. "I want to be credited as a Miami Beach police officer."

So rest assured gay couples across America, black NBA players are out there looking after you.

Can you think of a worse idea then an NBA player as a cop? Might explain the behavior of the New Orleans police dept.

SAINTS
As I have pointed out before, the importance people attach to their sports teams borders on the pathological. The players no longer have any connection to the cities (and fans) where they play, yet the local fans treat them as neighborhood heroes. Exhibit A for the worst example of this is the treatment afforded the New Orleans Saints. New Orleans, ravaged by hurricane Katrina is supposedly represented by the mercenaries that play for them yet don't live there. Their move to San Antonio has been featured news. The NFL treated the Saints opening game against the Panthers as a special event. The Carolina fans "gave the Saints a rousing cheer" when they stepped on the field, as if those players had much of anything to do with New Orleans or the hurricane disaster. "Refugees" were shown watching the game and the last second victory was hailed as a balm for the people of New Orleans as if a homeless, bankrupt, refugee could get much soothing from a meaningless win. I guess everyone has forgot the days of the 'Aints and fans with bags over their heads. Sure miss that Superdome.

MESSIER
One of the top white team-athletes retired this week to a collective sigh from the news media. Mark Messier is arguably the second best hockey player ever trailing only Gretsky is most scoring categories and Gordie Howe in a few longevity ones. Messier was a great team leader that captained two teams to Stanley Cup championships, one of them the New York Rangers, which is similar in difficulty to leading the Cubs to a World Series victory. Messier played in the media capital of the world which means little in the way of fame for a white athlete in a white sport. He also had the misfortune to play for one of the most inept sports franchises in team sports. The Rangers have not made the NHL playoff in years. And making the NFL playoffs is about as difficult as looting a Wal-Mart in New Orleans during a hurricane. This despite the fact they have had the highest payroll in the league for years. Talk about money poorly spent, you would think FEMA is running the team.

BONDS
Barry Bonds is back in the lineup to little fanfare also. The media probably doesn't know how to handle the situation. Especially in San Francisco where they fired a guy for criticizing the manager. They know Bonds is a cheater but are reluctant to point it out and incur the wrath of the minorities. Compare this to the media circus that followed Jason Giambi around when he came back. Also expect the fans to give Barry a pass, no chorus of boos like with Giambi. We white fans sure hate our white players!

The Yankees made a big deal about wanting to dump Giambi or reduce his salary because of the steroid allegations. Wonder what they would say now that Giambi is the best hitter in their line-up?

Hal Bodley, who writes an"On Baseball" column for USA today penned a beauty titled: "Not a Time to be suspicious of Bonds", saying that Bonds should not be under any suspicion because he has not tested positive for steroids (although he has admitted to a grand jury he took them). We should just give him a pass and enjoy his exploits. Bodley is invoking the OJ/Michael Jackson measure of proof to determine guilt. Basically that means if you are a black celebrity you are never guilty, regardless of proof and the more damning the evidence the more reason to be considered not guilty because the system is made up of evil white racists out to get any black man that succeeds.

WALKER
Remember how the Packers Javon Walker held out for more money because he was going to be soooo great this season? Well Walker is OUT for the year with a torn knee ligament. Might never be the same. Can you say "Bad Karma?
