even more pathetic than the Hogs not looking at him, is the fact that his record-breaking accomplishment didn't even make the state paper, the Arkansas Democrat Gazzette.

what gives? they talked about some kid out of MO, but not about home-grown Arkansan Derek Lawson's incredible performance... not surprising since they are up the butt of the Razorbacks. they probably don't want to tout a phenomenal talent that the Hogs are screwing over.

Lawson's record-breaking season came to end Friday night. his underdog Nettleton team couldn't keep pace with a vastly superior all-white Greenwood team.

i personally went to this game, and it looked as if Lawson wasn't 100%. he was noticebaly limping and looked like he was sick or something. that being said, his record-setting single-season total stands at 3,093 yards and 36 TDs.

i must say that i was even more impressed with Lawson's numbers after seeing his o-line. they were a bunch of fat, sumo-type kids who could barely move. if they played as porly all year as they did against Greenwood, this kid is nearly Superman.

a scouting report: Lawson doesn't have eye-popping speed, but nobody catches him from behind. has tremendous feet and good vision. physical running style reminds me of Eddie George... another upright runner without breathtaking speed. Lawson breaks a ton of tackles. runs with power but must be slippier than he looks, bcause he doesn't take many big hits.

he hasn't even tapped his physical potential, much less his running ability after this year, his first as a full-time starter. he doesn't look to be in real good shape; has a pretty good belly on him and isn't cut at all. probably weighs about 215 and stands a little over 6 feet. looks like a big country boy with a big frame, so he has tremendous upside in strength and explosiveness if he hits a weight room with a trainer who knows what they're doing. could shed the fat/bad weight and lean up a lot, then put on good muscle weight and be an imposing power back. shows good, not great, hands catching the football.

overall, it's amazing the numbers he put up when he is so obviously raw. he had tremendous ability and production already, but his upside is tremendous! if he were a black kid, everyone in the country would be looking at him.

as an aside, Greenwood's back, William Ridener, looked good. i'd never heard of this kid, but he's very slippery and quicker than he looks. he'd make a run and not look that great, but then you'd notice he'd picked up 20 yards. he outshined Lawson in the game with 197 yards and 4 TDs on 27 carries. Lawson had 140 yards and 2 TDs on 34 carries. of course, Greenwood's lines COMPLETELY dominated Nettleton's, and Lawson had very little help, getting hit in the ackfield 2 plays out of every 3.

all-white Greenwood now faces all-white except for one guy Pulaski Academy in the state championship game, after PA knocked off all-black Wynne.

let's hope he'll be next Mike Alstott!!!
How tall is he? He must be short as he looks too muscled out for a 180 pounder?

IN FLORIDA...
Top-ranked Jacksonville Bolles (13-0) and FB Ryan van Rensburg play in the 2A state championship game Saturday night against No. 2 Clewiston (13-0). The game is in Miami. Van Rensburg, who's been fighting an ankle injury, should be almost 100% for his final high school game. Bolles has won 6 state championships over the years under veteran coach Corky Rogers, the winningest coach in state history.

Van Rensburg has committed to Vanderbilt.

The game is in Miami? U.S. census reports that the city is literally 90% non-White. My guess is that the stadium will be full of blacks who will boo him until they're blue in the face. They'll probably boo him even more if he's having a good game.

The situation is kind of crazy when you think about it. I mean, when was the last time that the cleats of a No. 1 Floridian, White, runningback touched a Miami city field? Its gotta be a lengthy period of time. I see it as "racial victory" of sorts, especially if his team wins. However, it would be in the citys best interest to have "da police" present. Because if Clewiston is an all black team, and they bring their all black fans...lets see, how should I put this... "they gonna be sum violence happenin'".

well, Van Rensburg's team won its record 8th state championship, but i couldn't find any info on Ryan's performance in what appears to have been a defense-dominated game.

closer to home, my local high school team, the Jessieville Lions defeated almost all black Bearden and are playing for the state title on Friday night for the first time in school history.

they'll play against all-black Junction City.

Jessieville won a hard-fought defensive match-up between two class 2AA running teams.

it is their first-ever state championship in football. additionally, Junction City actually played several white guys, but the only one to touch the ball was their quarterback.

all-white Greenwood beat all-white-but-one Pulaski Academy for the 5AAAAA state Championship.

on a side note, for some reason PA's outstandning wide receiver Brian Langford, isn't getting much national notice. this season he broke the All-Time National Single Season receiving record.
smiley32.gif
in 13 games, Brian 124 catches for 1795 yards and 20 touchdowns.

smiley32.gif
that's an average of 14.5 yards per catch and 138.1 yards per game. wow!

in the state championship game, he caught 14 for 160 and a TD in the loss. interestingly, Brian's brother Aaron held the state record, which Brian broke this year en route to the national mark. Aaron only played football his senior year, and he got a scholarship to Arkansas State.

Brian has been "welcomed to walk-on" at the University of Arkansas.

On his 26 yard touchdown run he hurdled a man juked the crap out of the safety then dove into the end zone.

Roswell back Daniels aches to run
Player won't sit despite breaks, pain

By MICHAEL CARVELL
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Duct tape. Super glue. Safety pins.

Alex Daniel is likely to try them all if they'll hold his limbs together. The Roswell junior tailback's play-at-all costs attitude might be questioned, but his durability and toughness are as reliable as the yards he has gained this season en route to pacing the Hornets to Saturday's Class AAAAA championship game against Peachtree Ridge.

Roswell running back Alex Daniel has gained 1,757 yards and 16 touchdowns this season.

So determined is Daniel that his coach still doesn't know why he let Daniel dress out for a second-round playoff game against Brookwood. A sprained left knee that was injured the week before meant Daniel could not play.

Or so coach Tim McFarlin thought.

"He was mad about not being able to play, and I realized I had made a mistake by letting him dress," McFarlin said. "He kept saying 'Coach, I can go. I can go.' I told him I couldn't let him go because the doctors didn't clear him. We're not going to risk any player's future over one game."

Daniel wasn't trying to hear that. Helmet in hand, shoulder pads ready â€â€￾ and uniform way too clean â€â€￾ he spent the entire game lobbying McFarlin. He even offered to use his cellphone to call his father at halftime so his dad could give McFarlin the OK.

The call never came, but the move wouldn't have surprised Kenny Daniel either. Kenny said playing through pain is nothing new for his son.

"Alex is a tough kid," he said. "Last year, he injured his foot in the third game. A lot of doctors thought it was turf toe. After the season was over Alex's foot continued to burn and ache. It was then we found out he had played eight games with a broken bone in his foot."

It's that fiercly competitive nature that has bolstered Roswell in its most successful season since winning the state championship in 1970. It's also fashioned Daniel into his team's top offensive weapon.

In last week's semifinal against Tift County at the Georgia Dome, Daniel appeared to be back in true form. In the second half, he sprinted down the middle for a 76-yard touchdown run.

"It looked like he was shot out of a cannon," Roswell lineman Trey Johnson said. "I had blocked my guy down on the ground, and by the time I looked up, Alex was already 30 yards down the field. I mean, he was gone."

He has done that repeatedly this season, picking up 1,757 yards and 16 touchdowns.

That's a breakaway touchdown away from what most expected out of Roswell's tailback position this season.

The Hornets had to replace Randell Bell, whom McFarlin last year labeled "the best running back" he had ever coached in his 26 years at the north Fulton school.

Daniel entered high school as a highly-touted tailback, but with Bell firmly entrenched at the position, he was moved to defensive back. Last year, Daniel expanded his roles to split end and tailback, whenever Bell needed a rest.

"I learned a lot from watching Randell every day," Daniel said. "He was the best back I'd seen since I've been at Roswell. I thought he was the best in Georgia last year. I knew I would have big shoes to fill this year, and I was going to do my best to fill them."

Daniel has proved to be a capable replacement. While Bell was bigger and ran with more power, Daniel has above-average quickness and often makes defenders miss in the open field.

His biggest asset: A high threshold for pain.

Following the knee injury and the one-game absence against Brookwood, he returned to action in the state quarterfinals against Houston County. Daniel ran with a limp â€â€￾ and scored two touchdowns. He said his knee was fine but his left ankle got twisted.

Either way, he wasn't going to miss a second game. Period.

"I had been a part of the team, and it was killing me that I couldn't play," Daniel said of the Brookwood game. "This was Roswell's biggest game in forever, and I wanted to be part of it."

Saturday is the biggest game the Hornets have played in 36 years. And it's the biggest for Daniel. Like any rusher heading into the 15th game of the season, Daniel is banged up.

"When he was real young, other kids would watch cartoons and Alex would turn it on ESPN," his father said. "He loves everything about football. When I coached him in recreation ball for years, it was easy to see his competitiveness. He always wanted to be out there and in the middle of things."

Beat up or not.

As I've stated, my dad's side of the family is from Jersey, most of them live in Ocean county. So I was wondering if anyone had heard anything about a Monmouth county NJ star RB Mike Mele? My cousin told me he plays for Manasquan H.S. and his older brother plays LB for Illinois University. From what I've heard he runs a 4.6 40 yard, and has been averaging almost 10 yds/ carry this season in the NJ group 3 south conference.

My cousin told me he is a power runner with great quickness and cut back ability. Manasquan won the State championship for that conference group. I've noticed on Rivals that 4.7 is fast enough for African American TB's to get schoolarships to some of the DIV. I Universities, that are not top 25, coming out of H.S. However, from what I hear this talented young man is being recruited only as a LB. So instead of doing drills to improve his 40 time he is going to beef up to play LB.
