Call me old-fashioned, but I don't get what throwing a power ball has to do with anything related to playing football.

This event has replaced the bench-press at some high school combine events.(NIKE). Is this the PC way of saying we can't have kids showing their true strength and stamina by out benching many weak athletes.

Someone enlighten me on why throwing a powerball once, shows more strength and stamina than benching 185lbs. as many reps as you can?

I think its mostly a simple matter of "explosiveness"...football is a game that constantly requires explosiveness; in speed and strength(and mostly in short bursts) and some feel the pb toss measures upper body explosiveness abit better than the bp.

My understanding on this(kneeling powerball toss compared to standard BP) is the pb toss gives a better measure of "explosive upper body strength" compared to the standard bp.

The theory is while the bp is mostly a static upper body exercise(backside fully supported against a bench), the kneeling pb toss is entirely free standing(kneeling), and as such, more true upper body strength is utilized/required.

It's abit like how some scouts/coaches prefer vertical and short shuttle, over the 40, for a more accurate timing/testing method to determine explosiveness of the most utilized type of football speed(quick bursts & start/stop/start).
