Birmingham Brother Rice built a 20-point lead over Livonia Franklin and
held what looked like a safe 13-point advantage at halftime, but Rice
running back John Goebel wasn't convinced.

"We definitely had to keep our guard high," Goebel said. "At halftime
we said they had come back from 19-0. They didn't know what it was like
to lose this year. They weren't going to let it just happen."

Neither was Goebel.

Goebel ran for 232 yards and scored three touchdowns Friday to lead
Brother Rice to a 35-21 victory over previously unbeaten Franklin in a
Division 2 district final.

Rice (9-2) took advantage of several miscues to move into next week's
regional final, possibly against Orchard Lake St. Mary for a third
meeting.

"We said we had to have a perfect game, and we didn't get it," said
Franklin coach Chris Kelbert. "These guys, they fight, and they never
give up, and you can't ask for much more than that.

"Missed opportunities, mistakes -- that's why you don't win
championship games. Unfortunately, we were the ones that made those
mistakes and they didn't."

Leading 7-0, Goebel took a handoff, smacked into a pair of defenders, spun away and raced 87 yards for a 14-0 lead.

Franklin (10-1) scored with 41 seconds left in the half, then closed to
20-14 early in the fourth quarter before Goebel scored on runs of three
and 49 yards to put the Warriors safely ahead.

"The film we watched, they stopped the run heavy," Goebel said. "We
knew we had to come to run. Our wide receivers blocked well and our
line had a great day.

"Ryan Helmer is an offensive lineman, but he's got the speed of a
linebacker. On the last one, he came down there, and I don't know if
anybody saw it, but he made a great block down there. It's good to have
a linebacker who's blocking on your offensive line."

For the most part, Franklin's defense played well, but in the end it couldn't stop Goebel.

"That Goebel is a wonderful kid," said Rice coach Al Fracassa. "He's a
hard runner. He's been ailing, but tonight, he was back to his old
self."
