some good news in the midst of a ****ty preseason... Second-year S Matt Johnson is penciled in as the Cowboys' starting free safety. Johnson missed his entire rookie season with a hamstring injury, but the Cowboys remain very high on him. "I don’t know when I’ve ever seen a player impress our staff without having played in a ballgame any more than Matt Johnson," owner/GM Jerry Jones said. Barry Church, who tore his Achilles' in Week 3, would be the other starting safety if the season started today. Source: Dallas Morning News May 2 - 5:08 PM
Great news! Best of luck to Matt! Despite missing his rookie year due to injuries, Dallas Cowboys seem to very high on ex-small school safety Matt Johnson.
in a surprising twist in the modern NFL, there's been nothing but praise from the coaching staff regarding a young, White defensive back. frustratingly, Matt has yet to take full advantage of the opportunity, though, as injuries continue to bedevil him. Johnson ran down Bumphis who appeared poised to go the distance down the sideline for a long score. Matt apparently is fast as hell, as he effortlessly tracked him down before being awkwardly rolled up on the sideline after the tackle. hopefully, Johnson's injury will be nothing serious, and he'll be able to return to the field and flash the talent that has earned him a likely starting spot ... should he remain healthy.
