This is a competitive matchup of top-20, quality, undefeated fighters in heavyweight. It's nice to see two fighters and two management teams that aren't afraid to take risks and are actively seeking to fight strong opposition to move up in the division. The winner of this fight will probably be starting to crack people's "top-10" at heavyweight for winning this fight.

I remember Mike Perez from a Prizefighter tournament in London a while back, he won the heavyweight tournament, if I recall correctly he knocked out all of his opponents. He's a well schooled fighter with good technique, good power, and has a good amateur background coming from Cuba. This fight will be a test for Magomed and probably make him go some rounds, Mike Perez is definitely the best fighter Magomed has faced thus far as a pro.

It will be tough but I think Mago can pull it off! :)

Abdu-Perez, good one!

Yea, it's a very competitive fight between two undefeated heavyweights who have both looked great thus far in their careers. Both guys are taking a step up in this fight and both guys are taking on a big risk in taking this fight.

Abdusalamov has got some really nice KO wins on ESPN Friday Night Fights, and Perez has won Prizefighter and also has KO'd some top-50 opposition. On paper, this is very much an "even matchup" and I'd suspect betting lines will be close to even money (or perhaps, Abdu a very slight, almost incremental favourite).

It's refreshing to see undefeated heavyweights who aren't afraid to take risks and are taking steps towards fighting the best opponents.

Whoever wins this fight will move up considerably in the heavyweight rankings, personally I'd probably enter them into title contention and the top10. It's a very important fight and the winner will be moved up a long way.

Are there any white Cuban boxers?

The only white-looking Cuban boxer I can think of is Richard Abril, the WBA World champion at lightweight. Ive seen him fight a few times and he is quite good! Very tricky, skilled, and awkward type boxer. If my memory is correct, he fought Brandon Rios a while back and beat Rios soundly but was robbed by the judges.

Most of the well-known Cuban boxers tend to be black. This is true in amateurs and professionals. I'm not sure why this is, probably because Cuban society tends to push blacks as athletes more than others, and erroneously believes blacks are more athletic. Of course, the irony is that Whites tend to dominate amateur and professional boxing and this is increasing with each passing year. USA and Cuba used to be the dominant force in boxing, but they have both been steadily declining since the 1980's. USA has really went downhill. Cuba still produces some strong talent, but even they are showing signs of decline (or more accurately, just more Euro countries like Ukraine are producing better). The best nation, right now, for producing boxing talent in the world would be Ukraine.

But the government in communist Cuba has always been virtually all white, or what passes for white in Cuba. Latin Americans are much more race conscious than the stupid brainwashed gringos up north, and even the lowliest banana republic, or even communist Cuba, wouldn't stick in a piece of affirmative action dog mierda like the thing that currently goes under the name Obama* as their puppet president.

*Obama's step-daddy (we don't know who its real daddy is) was the CIA's man in Indonesia. He also used the alias "Obama". The Obamamama also worked for the CIA. This "manchurian candidate" president with no birth certificate and no paper trail and no history was groomed for office probably even before it was born.

Here are the blacks as always complaining about "racism", this time in Cuba. The Jew York Times:

For Blacks in Cuba, the Revolution Hasn’t Begun

Abdusalamov. Doesn't he look a little bit like Curly from the 3 Stooges in this picture? My favorite 3 Stooge episode was the one where Curly was a boxer, "Punch Drunks" - the only 3 Stooge episode that the Stooges wrote themselves.

Abdu training for the Perez fight:

http://www.boxingscene.com/magomed-abdusalamov/news/

He's trimmed down nicely since fighting in the 260's when he started. Perez has gone the distance in his last three fights and five out of his last seven. Abdu has 18 straight knockouts, 15 of them coming in round one or two. Both are undefeated. This will be a good one.

He'll survive this but his boxing is over. He better just quit and do something else. Let this be a lesson to other fighters to put authority in their staff to stop a fight as they deem fit. Winning or not, i wouldn't put a fighter out if he told me his hand was broken. Anyone remember Vitali quitting against Byrd? Vitali's looking pretty smart today for doing that. Why risk permanent injury?

Yes his career is probably over. If he were to fight on most boxing commissions would ban him. He could only fight in rogue areas and in those areas the purses are minimal. He had an experienced team if he told them he was experiencing head pain they would have stopped it. Jackson is a former paper titlist who fought in a few memorable brawls. Anyway thoughts and prayers with Mago...

Heart-breaking news concerning Magomed in the aftermath of his fight. Thankfully, according to the latest reports he is in stable condition and seems to be on track to make a full recovery. I will keep Mago in my thoughts over the next few days and pray he will make a full recovery. We're thinking about you, champ.

His fight with Perez last night was brutal, both guys were landing a lot of heavy shots. I think one of the reasons it wasn't stopped was because Magomed kept throwing back and was in the fight until the last bell. Magomed is a very courageous guy.

In the past, I've communicated with Magomed via Facebook, and I'm pretty sure it's his real account because when he was fighting in Argentina, his messages were coming from Argentina according to GPS. Also, he posts very personal pics. I'm fairly certain it's his legit account. He came across as a very nice, down to earth guy.

Sad to hear about this and I will keep him in my thoughts, hoping for a full recovery for such a courageous guy.

Update on fightnews.com. Not good. He's in critical condition. He had part of his skull removed to relieve swelling.

+1, There is a great deal of wisdom in trainers stopping fights early. I agree with you 100% in your comments. There's always a next time, and stopping a fight early is better than suffering a permanent injury or even dying.

Too many boxers have been injured or even killed in fights that weren't stopped or stopped too late. Lamon Brewster is now blind in one eye because of his fight with Robert Helenius that should have been stopped earlier. Frankie Leal sadly died recently following a KO loss to Raul Hirales. Czar Amonsot if I'm not mistaken also suffered a permanent brain injury in his fight with Michael Katsidis. I could go on... But it seems like every year in boxing there's probably 3 or 4 injuries in high-profile bouts, and I'd say 1 or 2 deaths per year.

Boxing is an unforgiving sport and that's why I'm always happy to see fights stopped sooner than later...

The corner always has authority to throw in the towel. They stopped the Stevens fight before he got brain damage, though in his case who could even tell the difference? More often, as in the case here, they try to make the fighter continue who really wants to quit or really needs to quit. Mago was expressing concerns about his injuries, and his face and facial expression looked terrible, but they let it continue. The referee or the ring doctor could have stopped it too. He had a broken hand, a broken nose, and I think a broken jaw too, and no one even knew about the brain damage yet. He'll never fight again. This is no longer about boxing, it's about life or death. I sure hope he pulls through.

Stevens had his uncle as his corner man and his mother about do a fainting spell in the stands and he wasn't getting truly killed like Shannon Briggs was against Vitali. I think if strangers were in his corner they would have thrown in out their for another round. That said the referee was pretty close to stopping the fight as he was stating that he needed to see Stevens firing back or he would stop the fight.

"and he wasn't getting truly killed like Shannon Briggs was against Vitali."

I thought that Briggs' corner and the ref and the ring doctor should have been arrested - and Vitali was cheated out of another KO.

So far no news today on Mago. Well, they say no news is good news.
