3rd Grader Runs 4.2 40 at NFL Combine
Clarett Ruling Already Affecting League
by Shawn Peters

At the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis this week, an eight-year old boy made waves by running a 4.2 40 yard dash in front of scouts from all 32 pro football franchises.

Wallace Smith, a 65 pound third grader from Roosevelt Elementary School in Dayton, Ohio, was scoffed at by league officials when his father made him eligible for the 2004 NFL draft in the wake of the Maurice Clarett ruling which struck down a long-standing minimum age for entering the draft.

"When we saw the birthdate on the application form, we thought it was a typo. We figured the kid was borne in '86, not '96," said Detroit Lions GM Matt Millen. "But when we saw him line up for the dash, we knew the date was right. What we didn't know was that a kid that small could run that fast."

Amid a chorus of taunts and catcalls, young Wallace took his mark and exploded off the line at the sound of the whistle. 4.2 seconds later, he crossed the finish line in complete silence.

Officials had Smith run the course two more times to verify the clock readings and he repeated the performance successfully both times.

"He's 8. He doesn't get tired," said Marcus Smith, the boy's father.

When alerted to this amazing development, NFL Commissioner Paul Tagliabue's response was one of a man both frustrated and vindicated.

"I said this would happen if we were forced to let down our age restrictions. I knew we'd have to deal with talented young men who aren't ready for the NFL yet. I just never thought they'd still be in grade school."

There are significant issues still standing in the way of Wallace Smith being drafted, however. Smith was unable to perform even one bench press of 225 pounds and while he had a solid 28 inch vertical leap, it was not enough to make scouts forget about his 4'2" height.

"There's just no way to really project where he'll be in two, four, or ten years," said Vikings coach Mike Tice. "I mean, you'd figure he'll get faster, but whether he turns out to be 6'4" and 210 pounds, or 5'9" and 180 will decide whether he's a receiver, a DB or a tailback. Besides... he'll be on, like, his fourth long term contract by the time he fills out."

However, inside sources say that mental growth should not be an issue. Smith scored in the top 10th percentile on the league-wide intelligence test as he was one of the few players able to do long division.

In another sign of intelligence beyond his years, Smith has retained Scott Boras as his agent.
