HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL
Mosure makes an impression
Running back John Mosure's main focus is keeping Columbus undefeated, and he has done his part by scoring 12 TDs, the top total in Dade and Broward county.

University of Miami offensive lineman Chris Barney was back on the Northwestern High sideline Friday night to see how good his former team's vaunted front seven really was.

Instead, Barney left the way most Northwestern fans did, shaking his head, impressed with how Columbus running back John Mosure bullied the Bulls in a 28-21 Columbus victory.

''That boy is tough,'' Barney said. ``He looks like a slow linebacker. But he runs hard, fast. He's tough. Real tough.''

Mosure torched the Bulls for a season-high 221 yards, two rushing touchdowns and a 50-yard halfback pass for a score. But the 5-10, 195-pound senior did more than lead the Explorers (5-0) to their biggest win in more than a decade.

He has given his team the confidence it needed to beat a highly ranked team in the playoffs. Columbus -- which still must beat Coral Gables (1-4), Miami High (0-4) and South Miami (3-2) to win District 14-6A -- has not advanced past the second round of the playoffs since 1982 -- the year it last played for the state title.

POSSIBLE HOME GAME

If Columbus wins the district title, the Explorers would play host to the District 13-6A runner-up. Northwestern (3-1), Hialeah-Miami Lakes (5-1) or top-ranked Central (5-0) likely would be Columbus' opponent. The three teams are ranked in the South Florida Top 20 poll.

''In all the years I've been here, we've been missing that kid that could break an arm tackle and get 50 yards instead of three or four,'' Columbus coach Chris Merritt said. ``As good as we've played, I'd be lying if I said [Mosure] wasn't carrying the load for us.''

No running back in Dade or Broward county has more carries (127) than Mosure or has scored as many touchdowns (12) this season. Hialeah-Miami Lakes junior Armando Allen is tied with Mosure for the most rushing yards in Dade and Broward with 821.

SOME INTEREST

As good as Mosure has been, college recruiters aren't exactly banging down his door. Mosure said South Carolina is the only major-conference school to show interest, and he also has heard from Division I schools Western Michigan and Central Michigan.

''He's not the typical running back [who] recruiters come to Miami to look for,'' Merritt said. ``But he's got all the ingredients. He's the fastest guy on our team, runs about a 4.52 [40-yard dash]. He benches 320 [pounds]. And his worth ethic . . . he always sticks around after practice and runs sprints on his own.''

Mosure, who writes poetry, doesn't play with much grace or concern for his body. He prefers to lower his shoulder and deliver a hit than duck out of bounds.

''He's a power runner,'' Columbus linebacker Antonio Lowery said. ``He's like a Mike Alstott or a Jerome Bettis. He doesn't try to shake you or dance around you.

``Hitting him every day in practice makes our defense so much better.''

Mosure didn't dance around questions about his decision to leave Palmetto after last season. He said he and his father, a former Palmetto player and the school's running-backs coach last season, were unhappy with his role.

Mosure said he's happier at Columbus.

''As long as the scoreboard says Columbus is winning, I don't care how many yards I have,'' Mosure said. ``I'm just having fun right now."

Of course.

Uh oh. Well, not like it matters if he could "shake" and "dance." They still wouldn't want him.

"Michigan State has a rich tradition of getting great running backs from the Sunshine State. Names like Lorenzo White, Sedrick Irvin and Marc Renaud are household names to Spartan fans. Coach John L. Smith and his staff are taking a close look at a Miami running back for the class of 2006, John Mosure. SpartanMag.com spoke with him last night and he had good things to say about Michigan State. Find out the latest."

his other choices could be: UCF, Boston College, Colorado State, Miami, Northwestern and Rutgers...

i think CSU, UCF, Northwestern and maybe Rutgers would give him a real shot at runningback spot... Miami would just make a fullback outta him, same goes for MSU

Story:

SpartanMag.com was able to catch up with one of the top running backs
in Florida for the class of 2006, John Mosure of Miami Columbus High
School. When we spoke, Mosure had just returned from practice for the
NIKE South Florida (Dade vs. Broward) All-Star Game. That game features
the best players in the Miami area going head-to-head.

The fact that Mosure is on the team should not be a surprise at all. In
leading Miami Columbus High School to a 10-1 record this fall, Mosure
was the leading rusher in Dade County with 1542 yards and 22
touchdowns. He was selected 1st Team All-Dade running back.

Mosure transferred to Columbus High School for his senior year and for
that reason he was somewhat of an unknown heading into the season.
However, his on-field performance quickly got the attention of numerous
colleges. Columbus High School is a class 6A school and plays one of the
toughest schedules in South Florida.

"The schools I am talking to the most are Michigan State, Colorado State,
Northwestern and Marshall."

Has Michigan State talked about a scholarship offer?

"They have talked about it. Coach Sirmans wants me to come up and meet
with Coach Smith. I have the All-Star game the weekend of January 13th,
so I am planning on going up the weekend of January 20th."

Coach Sirmans is not only Mosure's primary recruiter, but he is also the
running backs coach at Michigan State. How is Mosure's relationship with
Coach Sirmans?

"I like him a lot. He is good man. He has been very up-front with me
about everything and I respect that."

Has Coach Sirmans talked about why the Spartans like you?

"Yes, he told me that in addition to how I play he likes my character and
my work ethic. He thinks I would be a good fit for the offense they run."

Mosure's list of schools indicates that he will likely be playing his college
football out of state, is that a problem?

"No, not at all. I actually would not mind getting away. I guess I am not
the type of running back the Florida schools are looking for."

Mosure running style is not necessarily the prettiest or most graceful, but
it is very productive. He is a physical runner who seems to thrive on
contact. Mosure's running style wears teams down and he is often a
stronger runner in the fourth quarter than he was in the first. Mosure
excels at gaining yards after initial contact.

Though he is known as a physical runner, Mosure also has good speed.
He has been clocked as fast as 4.52 in the forty-yard dash. Coach Merritt
of Columbus High School indicated that Mosure is the fastest player on
his team. Several of his touchdown runs this fall were over 50 yards.
Mosure is also very strong, he already has bench pressed over 325-
pounds.

SpartanMag.com will be sure to catch up with Mosure in the coming
weeks. If the Spartans offer it would not surprise us if Mosure decides to
bring his talents to East Lansing and the Big Ten. Mosure sees himself as
the type of player whose style would translates well in a conference
known for physical play.

I have to give Colorado State University and Coach Lubbick a big applause. They have went against the Caste System time and time again.I really wish some other big time college programs would have the guts to do what the Rams have.Congrats to Mosure. The Rams are a perfect fit!
