EGR's Glendening headlines Div. 3-4 all-state team

East Grand Rapids running back Joe Glendening has been named to this year's Division 3-4 all-state team, but according to the Pioneers junior, all the credit goes to his offensive line.

"Our line has done a great job all year, opening holes," Glendening said. "They don't have all the size, but they are quick off the ball."

The 5-foot-11, 175-pounder is joined on the first team by Zeeland West's Matt Forward and Andy Plaska, Catholic Central's Jason Harvey and Cedar Springs' Jon Cole.

Elias Kos of Holland Christian and Casey Pike of Cedar Springs received honorable mention.

Midway through the season, EGR coach Peter Stuursma noticed a change in Glendening's performance and a willingness to take responsibility for the Pioneers offense.

"I can't remember the actual game, but it could have been at Forest Hills (Central)," Stuursma said. "At the beginning of the year, Joe was trying to find his comfort level in the offense. He was trying to find his rhythm.

"Running backs run on instinct, and he was trying to gain his comfort level, and when he did find it, it was perfect timing, because that is when the offensive line started to gel. Joe finding that comfort level, and the offensive line starting to gel acted as a springboard for our offense."

Glendening also plays defensive back for the Pioneers.

"He is as well a conditioned athlete as we have ever had, but Joe is one of the few players we have who is a two-way player," Stuursma said. "It is actually tougher to play both ways at the beginning of the year than it is at the end of the year because you are not in game shape at the beginning of the year."

Glendening has rushed for 1,876 yards and 33 touchdowns this season. He also has caught seven passes for 89 yards and two TDs. Defensively, he has 22 tackles, four interceptions and a fumble recovery.
