Apparently Bill Walsh was looking into drafting the Clemson QB in 1979, and accidently starting talking to Dwight Clark the Clemson WR. Then Clark starting running practice routes for the QB and looked good enough for Walsh to draft him in the 10th round, in the same draft, I believe that he drafted Montana in. The rest is history. I found this on wikipedia btw.

I believe Ring was, as was running back Paul Hofer, in a limited role. Hofer played in 12 games, actually ran the ball 60 times and had 27 receptions but I believe injuries limited his playing time in what was his last year. Edited by: referendum
