Lamonica's career illustrates very well how much the NFL has become a passing league, or more specifically a league of short to medium passes. The "Mad Bomber's" stats other than TD passes were fairly pedestrian compared to today even compensating for the shorter schedule. Lamonica's single season best in passing yards was 3,302, his career completion percentage was under .500, and he threw 164 TD passes to 138 interceptions. Joe Namath's career completion percentage was just over 50%, and he threw a lot more picks than TDs -- 220 to 173. John Hadl of the Chargers, the other well-known AFL "bomber," also threw more career interceptions than touchdowns, and his career completion percentage like Namath's was barely over 50%. The AFL was a big play league, and Lamonica made more than his share of them. RIP

Lamonica was one of my favorites from the time when the AFL seemed like the new “hip” alternative to the boring NFL. It seemed the long passes were longer back then. The changes Don mentioned in the game are startling.
Most of the differences are a result of rule changes. The difference in interceptions can be attributed to the purging of Whites from the secondary. The majority of the all black DB’s of today couldn’t catch a cold. They are as dumb as rocks too, oblivious to when and where to position themselves for a pick. They rarely pick up when the receiver is setting up for a reception, turn too late, get beaten on under thrown balls, and flail helplessly at balls that could be batted away.
