Dolphins coach Tony Sparano praises Brian Hartline, yet also engages in racial sterotyping, comparing him to Greg Camarillo:

''Brian is a very, very smart guy, along the lines of a Greg Camarillo type,'' Sparano said. ``He's been brought up in the slot -- they used him there a lot at Ohio State. That's maybe his strength.''

Hartline is a track star. How is that white sprinters automatically become "possession" receivers? I'd like to know how this strange loss of speed always seems to occur.

Notice in this article too that Mel Kiper dismisses Hartline as a fourth receiver and special teams demon. At least the Dolphins gave Camarillo an opportunity to play, perhaps the first white receiver since Wayne Chrebt to get such an unexpected promotion, so it appears Hartline landed with the right team, even with his bizarre "loss of speed."

I think Hartline found the right team too. Considering the only fair teams are the Colts, Pats (when they draft or trade for white talent they use it), Packers (recently), and Texans the odds were stacked against Hartline but I think he will excel down in Florida. Too bad stereotypes persist but atleast he will make his way onto the field.

Camarillo seams screwed to me, but Hartline is probably better anyway. He ran the 60m hurdles at Ohio state and can probably run a 100 in the mid 10's. He's almost as fast as Percy Harvin with the same or better explosiveness.

Mel Kiper's comments on Hartline on draft day were almost disdainful. I'm assuming his comments about Austin Collie were not as bad. After checking one Colts' forum, the fans were generally were unaware of Collie, but were impressed after watching some videos. Naturally, there were resisters in the crowd.

Who the Hell is Mel Kiper?

i hate kiper he is so obnoxious. The reason hartline had a bad season is because Pryor like most black qbs just runs as soon as he recieves the snap. he has no pocket presence at all. Edited by: green fire317

Hartline has just enough speed that he could even play Split-End. He ran a 4.52 at the NFL Combine and has a strong track background in the 300 mtr hurdles. However, the thing that impresses me the most about Hartline is his burst off the line, his agility out of his breaks and his footwork.

I hope Hartline is used as a starter with speed demon (solid, but overrated) Ted Ginn. Camarillo could be a good Slot man (hopefully he's recovered completely from his knee injury). But then guys who are solid black players like Devone Bess and Patrick Turner may complain that Miami has become a white haven for WRs.

I thought you were implying WR Jerry Porter was signed by Miami for a minute- both Jerry and LB- Joey are loud mouths and overrated.

I like Hartline in Miami. This is the same coaching staff, as Don pointed out, that pulled a Wayne Cherbet and gave a starting WR job to an undrafted white player. If I was Hartline I'd just be careful about running a quick slant over the middle in practice because you know a guy like Joey Porter is out to get him.

Also one thing I donnot like is the Dolphins did draft USC WR Patrick Turner the round before Brian.

Hartline is doing very well in the Dolphins training camp, as this blurb indicates. But notice that he is "a very criticized pick around these parts." Why is that? It can't be because of his size because he's 6' 3". It can't be because of his speed because he was a track star. It can't be because he wasn't productive at Ohio State, because he was. Hmmm, I wonder what it could be???

Brian Hartline - a very criticized pick around these parts - has put together back-to-back great days of practice. He followed up a good day yesterday by making the catch of the day today - a diving TD catch from Chad Henne. He also made a lunging catch from Chad Pennington and caught a deep pass down the middle of the field from Pat White. Right now, Hartline is hot and it doesn't matter which of the three quarterbacks are throwing to him. He's making plays consistently right now.

Some news about Hartline and Cammarillo.

From Rotoworld:
Greg Camarillo "appears" to have been passed on the depth chart by rookie Brian Hartline, according to beat writer Omar Kelly.

Hartline was the No. 3 receiver in Thursday's practice. It's especially bad news for Camarillo because Hartline has been inconsistent in camp. We suspect Camarillo has had a setback in his surgically repaired knee. Davone Bess' No. 2 job is locked tight.

more news on Brian, also from rotoworld:

Rookie Brian Hartline opened Monday's practice as the Dolphins' first-team flanker.

Either the Fins are trying to motivate Greg Camarillo and Davone Bess, or Hartline's making a serious push to start. He also started Miami's second exhibition, although he caught just one pass for eight yards. Keep an eye on this situation. Camarillo and Bess are now on the second team.

That is great about Hartline, hopefully, he can start this year. Even if he doesn't start, he should see a lot of time in the slot.

Meanwhile, the coaching staff is not nearly as high on Patrick Turner as the media is.

From Rotoworld:
According to beat writer Armando Salguero, the Dolphins' coaching staff is not nearly as high on rookie wideout Patrick Turner as the media is.

Athletic and 6'5/220, Turner looks excellent on the practice field. But his ability to separate is inconsistent and his desire is questionable. These were the same concerns about Turner during his USC days. He was a monster recruit coming out of high school, but underachieved all four years.

Lol so much for that. Most scouts thought Davone Bess didn't have the measurables to play in the league i believe he ran a 4.7 40? Hedid adecent job playing last year but when a bigger, faster, more talented receiver comes along you would expect him to be moved down on the depth chart. Unless the receiver who is replacing himis white, than it is up for the media to come up for excuses and scrutinize their(white guy)every move!

I watched Bess play at Hawaii with Colt Brennen, and he is a pretty decent WR. He plays alot like a white WR...however, his generic 40 time would have gotten him laughed off the field if he were white.

I think Hartline will get some major playing time this season not only because he's inherently the most athletic, but he's also the only non-smurf (unlike Ginn and Bess). Greg Camarillo is pretty good, but I've heard him speak....he sounds like a total wigger. I'd much rather see Hartline play ahead of him.Edited by: Thrashen

Apparently Camarillo isn't all the way back from his blown out knee of last season, which is no surprise. Ted Ginn is the number one WR on the Dolphins but he has been a bust so far. I agree that Bess looks to be a competent NFL receiver. Miami's receiving situation will likely continue to be in flux for the rest of training camp and into the season. Hartline has the talent to be a starter, maybe even a star, the question is always what kind of opportunity will he get. But like Austin Collie being drafted by the Colts, he appears to have landed in a good spot. Camarillo starting for the Dolphins last year was the biggest surprise since Wayne Chrebet started as a rookie for the Jets in '95, so at least Tony Sparano has shown he has some fairness for white receivers.

Great summary. I think Danny Amendola and Bess are similar players actually. Bess ran a 4.67 40 and Amendola ran a negligibly better 4.64. Both are quick and shifty slot WR types without the element of a good 3rd gear to separate on long fly routes...But we can see who got a chance to start and who very well might be completely done in this league. I am predicting Amendola gets cut from Phili this year.

You might call these two poor men's Wes Welkers as well, but Welker has an absolutely "FREAKISH" first few steps and loses basically ZERO speed when making a move. Welker's absolutely tough as nails and just won't be denied the ball. Welker ran a 4.61/4.65 40 at his Pro Day.

I think either Camarillo or Hartline should play Flanker in Miami and Bess should play the slot as the 3rd wideout.

Draftdaddy has got it right!!

Former Ohio State wide receiver Brian Hartline has a chance to start for the Miami Dolphins as a rookie.

DD.Comment: Hartline's lackluster stats last season were mostly due to O.S.U.'s poor quarterback play. That, coupled with his strong track history and great Combine workouts, is why we rated him as a 3rd rounder last spring, while most sites pegged him as a 7th rounder or undrafted free agent. If Ted Ginn can elevate his game even more after a good sophomore year in the N.F.L. and former undrafted free agent Devon Bess can handle the slot fulltime, the Dolphins could have a strong receiving corp for several years.

Hopefully, Hartline will start for the Dolphins this year. He started for the Dolphins tonight against Tampa Bay. He had a nice catch called back on a BS penalty.Edited by: Jack Lambert

If his first catch hadn't been negated by a dubious offensive pass interference call, Hartline would have finished with over 100 receiving yards.

<DIV id=story ="">

TAMPA -- Brian Hartline has been nothing if not persistent.

Always.

And it appears that personality trait might pay off -- big time -- for the Dolphins.

Case in point was Thursday night's preseason game in Tampa.

Hartline, a fourth-round pick out of Ohio State, got his first start in a Miami uniform and ended up making the most of it: For the game, mostly against the Buccaneers' starting group, Hartline led Miami with three catches for 79 yards.

The most telling catch, perhaps, was a 54-yarder early in the third quarter to Tampa's 6-yard line, which set up a 2-yard touchdown toss to tight end Anthony Fasano.

No doubt this is exactly the type of thing coach Tony Sparano was looking for: Another solid receiver to compliment quarterback Chad Pennington's penchant for hitting multiple targets.

If Hartline pans out, Pennington's numbers could shoot into the stratosphere.

Consider that last season Pennington completed 67.4 percent of his passes for 3,653 yards and did it by hitting 14 different receivers. Six of those guys had more than 30 catches and three -- Ted Ginn Jr., Greg Camarillo and Davone Bess -- had more than 50.

When it was announced this week that Hartline was getting the start Thursday, Sparano was questioned as to what this meant in regards to who would start opposite Ginn.

Sparano played it rather close to the vest.

``It's still uncertain to me, we looked at [Hartline] out there in the first group last week, it's still uncertain to me right now,'' Sparano said. ``It's starting to clear up a little bit more for me, but it will take a little bit more time. . . .

``[Hartline] had a good week of practice, and, I think, I mentioned this [type of consideration] all along. I think, from my end, getting a chance to see some of these players against higher-level competition sometimes [offers better perspective]. . . . Just giving him an opportunity to go out there and see him against better people kind of evens the reps out a little bit.''

And, in the case of Thursday night, probably intensified the competition at receiver.

Behind Hartline, in those more pertinent first three quarters, no other receiver had more than one catch. And then there was this: Hartline was thrown at five times, or two more than the next receiver.

Midway through the fourth quarter, Camarillo made a significant play of his own, a 52-yard catch and run deep in Tampa territory. But Miami failed to convert the play into a score. Chad Henne was picked off a few plays later.

Hartline test very good at the combine in short area quickness. He won't burn anyone deep but is one of the fastest players in the NFL in short bursts. He could develop into a Wes Welker type.
