This weekend, the Texas football state championships will take place. The Texas system has five classifications from 1A (smallest schools) to 5A (largest schools) and 2 divisions in each classification.

It is a screwed up system that was implemented about 10 or so years ago to give more teams a shot at a state title. The way the system works, each district has three teams that qualify for the playoffs. The school that has the largest student enrollment (not necessarily the best team) goes into Division 1 and the other two teams go into Division 2.

Here a breakdown of the matchups from a caste perspective:

Class 5A, Division 1 - Southlake Carroll vs. Austin Westlake
These are the two winningest programs in Class 5A over the last ten years. SLC starts 20 white starters on both sides of the ball, with QB Riley Dodge (3,881 yds passing, 1,077 yds rushing) as the playmaker both through the air and on the ground. Westlake starts 22 white players on both sides of the ball led by 6'-5" QB Nick Foles (Az State recruit) and RB Bron Hager (son of UT LB great Britt Hager).

Class 5A, Division 2 - Cypress Falls vs. Cedar Hill
Cy-Falls is a mixed race team from the Houston area, but it's top players are white. Led by D1 QB prospect Jeff Welch; the top rated LB in Tx, Derrick Stephens (A&M recruit); and one of the top receivers in Tx, Roger Holland (A&M recruit). Cedar Hill is one of the top teams from the DFW area and is black at just about every position.

Class 4A, Division 1 - San Antonio Alamo Heights vs. Copperas Cove
This game was played last weekend and all white Alamo Heights destroyed mostly black Copperas Cove, 40-28. AH QB Giovanni Vizza had one of the greatest games in state championship history, rushing for 141 yds and passing for 347 yds.

Class 4A, Division 2 - Waco vs. La Marque
Two teams that are coal black. La Marque has been a dominant program in this division for the last 10 years.

Class 3A, Division 1 - Texarkana Liberty Eylau vs. Robinson
This game was played last week and mostly black Liberty Eylau beat mostly white Robinson, 35-34.

Class 3A, Division 2 - Liberty Hill vs. Celina
All white Liberty Hill has two dominant RBs in TB Brent Bode and FB Doug Allman, both have rushed for over 1,700 yds this season. Soph LB Cory Latimore is tackling machine with 130 tackles this season and led the team last year in tackles as a freshman. Predomintantly white Celina is the most dominating small program in the state, winning 6 state championships in the last 10 years. They are led by QB Seth Davis and RB Charlie Waldrep.

Class 2A, Division 1 - Littlefield vs Tatum
Don't know much about these teams other than Littlefield is all white and Tatum is mostly black.

More coming....

The final tally:

Class 5A Division 1 Champ - Southlake Carroll
Class 5A Division 2 Champ - Cedar Hill
Class 4A Division 1 Champ - Alamo Heights
Class 4A Division 2 Champ - La Marque
Class 3A Division 1 Champ - Liberty Eylau
Class 3A Division 2 Champ - Liberty Hill
Class 2A Division 1 Champ - Tatum
Class 2A Division 2 Champ - Mart
Class 1A Division 1 Champ - Alto
Class 1A Division 2 Champ - Chilton

Of all of the Texas State Champs, 4 were schools that had at least 95% of the starters were white players. Not to mention that Southlake Carroll was named the USA Today (mythical) National Champs of High School football.

SteveB, I get how all of the classes are ranked from the biggest schools(5A) to smallest ones(1A) but why then are there two divisions within each class?
