Wow, indoors and with lousy form and a bad lane draw. I say he'll do a 19.80 this season when they go outdoors.

Get ready to change 20.31 from the title as soon as the weather warms up. It was good to see him pushed.

I can't wait to change both the times above to a wind legal sub 10 and sub 20! :) Boling is my avatar as he is my favorite sprinter. What a future this kid has ahead of him! :)

when you are running 200m indoors or outdoors in an outside lane you know where the other competitors are, you can hear them and see them in your peripheral vision. Laird has to be mostly white from his skin colour and physical features. Without Laird I do not think Boiling would have run 20.19 in this race. I am looking forward to him running outdoors. His leg of the 4x400m cements the fact that he is a serious talent at the 400m as well. Well done Matthew!!

I agree sprintstar. Laird pushed him to the limit. It also looked like Laird may have stepped in his lane at the end of the bend but I couldn’t quite tell. Does an indoor time like this usually translate into sub 20’s outdoors?

He will definitely dip under 20 during the outdoor season this year. I would love to see him go to the Olympics this year.

short reply regarding running the outdoors deuce: yes!

as i posted in another thread, it is my opinion that Boling will DESTROY the competition outdoors in the 200, as well as set new PBs in the 100m and 400m, this summer because of the improvements he’s made with his strength training and start over the past year+.

as for your comment about Laird being in Boling’s lane: stepping out of bounds to an outside lane actually increases the distance you run, so (to my knowledge) that is allowed UNLESS you interfere with another runner’s progress. stepping out of bounds to an inside lane reduces the distance you run, so it’s an automatic DQ because it gives an unfair advantage to the runner who does it.

Matt Boling is the first white sprinter to win the Division 1 200 meter indoor championship ever going back to 1988. The last white sprinter to win the the Division 1 outdoor 200 meter(or comparable yard) championship was Charlie Tidwell(KU) in 1960. The last white sprinter to win the Division 1 NCAA 100 meter(or comparable yard) championship was Larry Questad(Stanford) in 1963.

Yes his talent his emerging and it looks like won't be like many high school prodigies a short burst of energy that fizzles out at the senior level.

To me it looks like he has the attitude of a winner and won't out think himself at the nationals in the summer for the probable Olympic games( I would say it's a shade better than 60 percent the games happen in even a limited spectator capacity).

Correct that Boling is the first white sprinter to win NCAA Division1 Indoor 200 meter championship going back to 1988.
Brandon Byram got 2nd place in 2010.

However, Tom Jones of UCLA in 1966 was the last white 200m/220y outdoor champ . (Charlie Tidwell btw, was black)
Larry Questad was 2nd in 1963, Mark Lutz 2nd in 1973, Kevin Little 2nd in '89, Marek Niit 2nd in 2011.

In the 100m/100y, Questad won in 1963.
Darel Newman took 2nd in 1965.

In the 60m, John Teeters took 2nd in 2015, as did Dusty Stamer in 2005.

Thank you for correcting me, particularly about Charlie Tidwell who killed his wife and then himself in 1969. The image that came up for him was a mugshot that was for a white guy and I made an assumption.

I am hoping that Boiling can break the 20 second barrier in the 200m outdoors, no guarantee of this happening as alot of factors come in to play. He most definitely has the talent(genetics) to do so, mental determination not to lose as well. He hopefully drops the LJ this outdoor season and takes away that jolt to his hamstrings, knees and ankles as well as his back. Food for thought: at 16 Jack Hale was a 7m plus long jumper as well.

Of the 14 sprinters who have run under 20.30 indoors, 10 have run sub-20 outdoors.
So odds are in his favor.

Matt has a great chance at an Olympic 200m medal.
Some recent indoor/outdoor 200m transitions: Laird USA 20.20i/19.81 outdoor
Bednarek USA 20.30i/19.80 outdoor
Odouru Nigeria 20.08i/19.73 outdoor

Matt I expect to run into the 19.6x and win an Olympic medal. His major competition will be Noah Lyles USA who has ran 19.69-19.65 five times and a one time 19.50.

For those of you who don't know much about Matthew Boling. Here is a video that tells more about Matt and how he rose to the star that we are witnessing emerge on the national & international scene.

Matthew Boling ran 20.43 in Florida today.
I expected better.

Tomorrow he runs the 100m.

I saw a few other races from this meet online, and the races were run in very rainy conditions.
That helps explain the slow-ish (for him) time.

What I got out this poorly written article, is that there is a 9th grader named Luke Rives to keep an eye on.
11.07 - 100m
22.6 - 200m
22-1 - LJ
4.48 - 40 yard

The kid also plays baseball and football.

Boling is coming off his first national title indoors over 200 meters. With the 2021 SEC Outdoor Track & Field Championship starting on May 13 and going all weekend he will have a chance to continue on building
his legacy in the SEC and nationally as one of the best Collegiate Sprinters in the US. He will compete in the 100, 200, 4 x 100 Relay and 4 x 400 Relays. Glad to see him not in the long jump or the ind. 400 meters. He
needs to get to the next level outdoors over both 100 & 200 meters. This will be a good early test to see where he is at currently? Hoping for some new personal bests this weekend outdoors! :)
