College Basketball Season 2020-21

Iowa struggles when the officials let the game become exceedingly physical, which is what happened today. Illinois loves that style of play, and they took advantage today. losing Nunge a couple weeks ago really hurt the Whitehawks, and the loss is especially visible in games like today’s where the lack of depth (and length) in the post cost them dearly. it is also my opinion that Nunge is the one player on Iowa that plays better in the rugged physical games than he does when the basketball is pretty and free flowing.

if Iowa runs into a physical, fouling, handsy team (and some Big Ten officials) in the NCAA Tourney, they could go home early despite their scoring prowess.

I'm going to have some time over the next couple of days to write up at least a couple of "regions" (they all play in Indianapolis). This is always my favorite time of year on the sports calendar. Even though the football team previews have more personality, I love using the tourney thread here to help pick an informed bracket.

I haven't watched a lick of Big 12 basketball, but apparently there are some key whities on a few of the tourney squads. The auto-bid conferences always stock a few racist rosters. Also, it never fails to shock and disappoint seeing the teams with a dozen scholarship blacks and a handful of white walk-ons to wave the towels and pull up the team GPA.

The AP named its All-American teams today.

Luka Garza (Iowa) made the 1st team for the second time, and he was joined by Corey Kispert (Gonzaga).

Drew Timme (Gonzaga) and Hunter Dickinson (Michigan) are on the 2nd team.

Cameron Krutwig (Loyola Chicago) earned 3rd team honors.

The long list of honorable mentions includes Franz Wagner (Michigan), Alex Barcello (BYU), Colin Gillespie (Villanova), Mac McClung (Texas Tech), Sam Hauser and Jay Huff (Virginia), and Sandro Mamukelashvili (Seton Hall).

congratulations to Luka Garza, aka Garzilla! the Player of the Year couldn’t have gone to a more deserving player.

hard to understand how Mark Few, the head coach of Gonzaga, was passed over in favor of Michigan’s Howard for national Coach of the Year, however. Few has the Zags poised for a historic accomplishment, something that hasn’t happened since Indiana did it in 1976 ... going undefeated AND winning a national championship. of course, it still hasn’t happened yet, but they are still in the running. meanwhile, Howard’s Wolverines laid an egg against a smaller, less talented team to bow out of the Tourney.

in related news, UConn freshman point guard Paige “Buckets” won the ladies national Player of the Year award, becoming (if i’m not mistaken) the first freshman EVER to win it on the women’s side. congratulations to a phenomenal playmaker! (her team is still alive in the Tourney, as well.)

Corey Kispert has been named the Julius Erving National Small Forward of the Year, in addition to being named to numerous other first-team All-American honors.

Drew Timme has been named Karl Malone National Power Forward of the Year, in addition to being named to numerous other first- or second-team All-American honors.

Luka Garza has been named the Oscar Robertson, AP, and Lute Olson National Player of the Year, as well as being named the National POY by numerous other organizations and the Senior CLASS Award’s National POY honor.

considering how few White athletes get an opportunity to play Division One collegiate basketball, they’ve done an impressive amount of dominance. perhaps this is the White supremacy we’ve been hearing so much about?

25 points for Timme...and many with 4 fouls on him. Kispert with 15 points. Good game for our guys. Too bad Kispert only went 2 for 8 from behind the arc and Suggs had to bail them out at the end. Zags were also dependent on Ayayi's 22 points. Kispert needs to work on his 3 ball.
