From the Miami Herald:

Welker quite a catch for Dolphins, fans

Wes Welker leads the Dolphins in receptions and receiving yards -- as the
receiver has morphed from fan favorite to go-to guy.

BY JEFF DARLINGTON
jdarlington@MiamiHerald.com

She stood at the microphone amid an audience of fans, relentlessly
unwilling to accept Dolphins coach Nick Saban's attempt to sidestep her
question.

This young woman wanted an answer. No, she needed an answer. So
much so, she was willing to ask during on the air during a live broadcast
of Saban's weekly radio show.

''That little stud that you have, Wes Welker, is just so great,'' she said
earlier this month, referring to the Dolphins' undersized, overachieving
receiver. ``I need to know if he's married. C'mon Nick, give me an
answer: Yes or no.''

DRAWING NOTICE

For the record, Welker has a girlfriend. But that's no shocker. And really,
neither is this: After two years of anonymity in South Florida and across
the NFL, Welker seems to finally be getting noticed.

Three weeks into the season, Welker also is forcing defenders to check
him out harder than his new admirers. For the 5-9, 185-pounder, who
has become accustomed to a lack of respect for years, it's about time.

''He'll always have people [who] doubt him,'' center Rex Hadnot said.
``But I think everyone respects him as soon as they see what he's capable
of doing. What he's done and the toughness he's played with, they better
respect them.''

Since the start of his career with the Dolphins, Welker has always had a
modest fan base, praising him for his sneaky speed and consistent ability
on special teams. But now he's giving far more people a reason to cheer.

''Wes Welker [is] the type of guy that goes 100 mph every time,''
quarterback Daunte Culpepper said. ``He's going to give 100 percent on
every play. That's the type of guy you want to play with.''

Welker has 14 catches (one more than Chris Chambers) for 167 yards (14
more than Chambers). Some think it will be Culpepper who will eventually
help Chambers to break out this season. But it actually might be Welker.

With production like this, the Dolphins' No. 3 slot receiver is going to
cause defenders to give him some respect. Chambers, wide receiver Marty
Booker and tight end Randy McMichael could be the beneficiaries.

''Hopefully if he continues to do that, he'll draw some attention and it may
open things up for other people,'' Saban said. ``He's done a good job
again for us this year.''

Welker will tell you he has done nothing different this year. He rarely gets
noticed in public during his day-to-day activities when he's away from
the Dolphins facility.

That's the way he likes it, and as a result, he has quietly become a player
recognized for his receiving skills rather than special teams.

''My goal is to go out there and play as hard and as fast as I can for every
play I'm out there,'' Welker said. ``As long as I do that, I'll let everything
else take care of itself.''

During Welker's senior year of high school, he did not receive a football
scholarship offer until after National Signing Day. And during college, he
went undrafted despite more success at Texas Tech. Even in the NFL, he
was cut by the Chargers before the Dolphins picked him up.

''I'm used to it by now,'' Welker said. ``I just expect to deal with
adversity. It's all I've ever known.''

"sneaky speed", huh? to translate... a white guy who can run.

and i wonder why Wes has had to deal with so much adversity... he's been a outstanding player at every level. hmmm...

When you think about the published MSM reports that Nick Saban wanted to cut Welker because he didn't like him and replace him with Marcus Vick of all people -- completely raw as both a receiver and kick returner andofdubious character to be kind about it -- as the third receiver and kick returner, it just emphasizes again all the roadblocks white football players constantly face starting in high school and earlier and which increasingly fewer survive.

The NFL is winning at all costs. So hiring Markus wouldn't surprise me, they have literally taken armed robbers and suited them up. But then again the robbers have to be able to play and Vick can't....

Profootballweekly.com couldn't pass up an opportunity to take a shot at Welker. The fact thatWelker has more catches than the great Chris Chambers just couldn't have anything to do with the fact that he is a better player than Chambers. No, it must be Daunte's or someone else fault for not throwing Chambers the ball. I love how these Nubian worshippers, when confronted with thepossibility that a Caste system might exist in the NFL, always laugh it off and say "Don't be ridiculous, the teams are just letting the best players play". But as soonas one of their anointed onesstart to flounder, then there must be something drastically wrong with the universe. It just can't be possible that one of these white guys can actually play, at least at a position other than QB or OL.

"The Dolphins probably aren't as bad as they've looked the first three weeks. However, Wes Welker having more receptions and yards receiving than Chris Chambers is ridiculous. The arrival of Daunte Culpepper was supposed to help Chambers reach his potential as a difference-maker on offense, not keep him suppressed. "

I guess Daunte is "oppressing" Chambers. What is important here is the fact that Welker is a superior player in every single respect to the Dolphins' other starting WR, journeyman Marty Booker. Welker faces an almost impossible task in grasping the starting job away from this thoroughly unimpressive, slow, pedestrian veteran.

Apparently someone really has it in for Welker at Profootballweekly.com.

Here's yet another hit piece on him:

Though WR Wes Welker has been a pleasant surprise and is second on the team in receptions through Week Four, we hear that his production should cool off as soon as QB Daunte Culpepper and the Dolphins' offensive line step up their play. Word is Welker, a hardworking, tough and well-liked player, has been benefiting from the O-line's struggles and Culpepper's lack of mobility, with the QB's surgically repaired knee limiting his mobility and forcing him to get rid of the ball quicker than he would like at times. As a result, Welker has often been the hot read vs. blitzes while working out of the slot and has been the recipient of a lot of dump-off passes from Culpepper. Welker told PFW that he's comfortable filling a bigger role. "Well, I am not changing anything from my approach last season. I just think I am coming along with all the film study and preparation, and the coaches are giving me a chance. I have felt pretty good out there."

This kind of crap ticks me off. Wes Welker was probably the most dominant offensive/return player in the Big 12 in college. I have seen him take over games against teams like Texas, Oklahoma, Texas A&M, and Colorado. One game against the Aggies he had over 100 yds receiving, over 100 yds in punt returns, and three TDs. He single handily beat us. The man is one heck of a football player. His college career puts any other Dolphin to shame. There is no reason that he shouldn't be a star in the NFL.

Its funny that Welker is more or less being insulted in this article, as though he is somehow to blame for the Dolphin's lame quarterback and weak offensive line. The one uh, 'bright' on spot on the team and he is criticized because the rest of the team is sh*tty and not him.

Just read on a fantasy site that rookie Derek Hagan may start at WR for the Dolphins this week instead of Wes Welker. Yeah, that would be par for the course; the team's leading receiver, who doesn't even start, cannot rise to #2 on the depth chart even when the #2 guy gets hurt. It doesn't get any more blatant than this, folks.

After Welker's diving 25 yard reception in the 4th quarter, announcer Phil Simms informed us that he wasn't fast he just comes out of breaks quicker than most. Thanks Phil.

Yes, I heard that is well. It was pure doublethink

Something like, "he isn't fast at ALL, but sometimes he is real quick"

I am paraprashing but he definitely said he isn't "fast at all"

Shockingly enough, Welker has joined all the other injured white WRs (the handful that exist in the NFL, that is) with an injury that now has him questionable for this week's game. How do you not get injured in the previous week's game (at least it isn't reported, and Welker was playing at the end of the game), yet somehow have a "questionable" status, and a previously unknown injury, a few days later?

Update on Matt Jones- this guy, whom I love as much as any of you, is really blowing his chance with his slow healing (to put it politely) groin injury (which has now apparently turned into a hamstring injury). Even with the rest from the bye week, he is doubtful to play this week. I'll say it again- these very few white players with a chance to play skill positions in the NFL today simply have to toughen up and get back on the field.

I am sure they are trying to get healed as quickly as possible, but there is only so much they can do.

It's football. Play hurt. Jones is about to be a wasted first-round pick, a
Mike Mamula combine hype job.

Would you rather him play hurt and maybe screw himself up for his career. I'd rather have him close to 100% than be out there risking a worse or even permanent injury. It would be good to see some of these guys play with minor injuries though, just so we have some presence at the position.

What is Welker's injury? I doubt he will sit out.... its just an excuse to get Marcus Vick in on some kick or punt returns I'm sure..
