The media has an obsession with reporting stories of mediocre basketball players and somehow hoping their talent transfers onto the football field. Obviously Antonio Gates is a special player and an exception to this, but the majority are just a waste of time! Take for example this guy, Simon Harris he bench-pressed 225 pounds 20 times, posted a 32-inch vertical leap and ran the 40-yard dash in 4.9 seconds, big frickin deal! He's 6'3 259lbs and sat the bench in college(basketball). Not an overly athletic kid, but somehow he's still getting looks when there are more deserving TE prospects out there.

A white player with those numbers would be laughed at. Since he's black they see the affletic potential in him. We know that blacks are the best athletes and the best at everything according to the media.

Jameson Konz already showed small glimpses of production in his first year on offense- and absolutely eats this guy up in measurables as a possible TE project. Konz has got to be one of the top 5 most athletic players size/measurement wise in the last 10 years. I bet the NFL would rather take on this scrub as a "project" than allow Konz to blossom.

Hey at least former basketball player TE "project" Fendi Onobun has blazing measureables despite never seeing the field at TE for Arizona.

Are those measurable supposed to be impressive for a TE? God, guys on my high school and small college football team (including myself) destroyed those numbers. Even some of the obese black pigs on a typical NFL OL can run a 4.9. The average semi-athletic human (man or woman) can could run a 4.9.

The Afro's the NFL "chooses"Â￾ for tryouts get more and more mediocre.

The fact that every alleged next great (black) tight end is supposed to be the next Antonio Gates is stereotyping itself. How often do we hear about some player of any color becoming the next Jason Witten or Dallas Clark? It isn't like Gates is so statistically/physically superior to every other TE that he can be the only template for next great TE.

The white tight ends in the NFL not only have noticeably better hands and are natural receivers, they are also more athletic. Most black TEs look stiff when running when they aren't downright fat. There are few that are smooth looking athletes.

Exactly. I'd go as far as saying white tight ends/ fullbacks are faster too. The softer hands is the most noticeable advantage we have.

Classic DWF list... http://fifthdown.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/05/01/best-tight-ends-in-n-f-l-the-top-10-list/

Brent Celek, Philadelphia Eagles

A poor blocker. Largely a product of mismatches created by Philly's faster weapons.

He's not in the Top 10, but look who is...

7. Kellen Winslow, Tampa Bay Buccaneers

By far the best route-runner at his position.

May I ask... who can this "string-bean" block?? I sense a double standard.

6. Jason Witten, Dallas Cowboys

A consummate professional.

WOW, where do I start? "Quicker than he looks" - would have made more sense, really...

That list is crapola! Dallas Clark at #5?! Shockey & Olsen not in the top 10?! Gates at #1? A true pro-caste listing indeed!

I had to hear this constantly from DWF and others alike when the Saints took Jimmy Graham in the 10 draft instead of a guy like Dennis Pitta from BYU even though we don't need a TE we have David Thomas sitting there behind Shockey. All I heard was he played basketball he is the next Antonio Gates. He will be another Kellen Winslow from the U a overhyped product of the system.
