NCAA Approves 35 Bowl Games

Ugh! More bowl games = less exciting bowl games, imho. <cite></cite>






INDIANAPOLIS -- The NCAA has approved 35 bowl games for the next four
years, including two new ones: the Dallas Football Classic and the New
Era Pinstripe Bowl in New York.

The NCAA said Friday that the
bowls were licensed on a four-year cycle for the first time, though they
will be reviewed each year. The move puts the licensing schedule --
from 2010-11 through 2013-14 -- in line with the length of bowl
conference agreements.

The first Pinstripe Bowl will be played at
Yankee Stadium in the Bronx on Dec. 30. It will include the No. 3 team
in the Big East and the No. 6 school in the Big 12, excluding Bowl
Championship Series participants.

The first Dallas Football
Classic at the Cotton Bowl is planned for New Year's Day 2011, involving
the seventh-ranked team from the Big 12 against the sixth-ranked team
from the Big Ten. Future games will include Conference USA.

Bowl
applications were denied for the Cure Bowl in Orlando, Fla., and the

Hey Colonel, you might want to edit out the "garbage" at the top of your cut-and-paste.

I don't mind the extra bowl games so much. From a CF perspective, it usually means that one or two of those "awful white teams" will probably get an opportunity to play, since all of the"great" 6-6 black teams have already been selected for other bowls.

Playoffs please, enough with this bowl garbage!!

I view additional bowl games as a thumb in the eye to all who want to
see real post-season football. What better way to prove that majority
White teams are capable of beating the most pro-caste teams than through
a playoff system? Most of these new bowl games aren't viewed by very
many people anyway, so I don't see them as having any real positive
impact on destroying the caste system or changing the attitudes of the
DWFs.

By the way, I was in the middle of editing my post when
the internet went down. I'm always careful to make sure my posts are
clean.

Solution: disband the Sun Belt conference and have other area conferences take those teams in- or let them become independents. This will make 10 conferences. The winner of each conference will get an automatic bid into a 16 team playoff tournament on each side of the bracket as 1-5 seeds. Then take the next best 6 teams in BCS rank and put them in on both bracket sides as 6-8 seeds. Run this "Playoff madness" tournament on Thursdays and Saturdays in December and early January. Then take the top 30 teams who didn't make the tournament and have them play secondary sponsored "Hurrah" bowl games on Fridays and Sundays during this same time (that avid college football fans would watch) so that the FBS could still get more sponsorship money.

A playoffs could put to rest all those SEC supremacists. In truth the SEC hasn't been very dominant against the other 5 power conferences or even the WEC or Mountain West Conference, but those DWFs have short memories.

Glad you agree Dixie! And Tough, your proposal sounds perfect. Too bad no one in the NCAA has the balls to propose a plan like this and the result is we're stuck w\an inconsistent product that likely won't change.

First let me say that I am not defending the current bowl system, but it is a money making scheme for the bowl sponsors. Having played in two bowls (albeit 20 years ago), the bowl sponsors use the game as a marketing tool. The teams get to the bowl site 4 or 5 days prior to the game and are shuttled from one event to another. I remember luncheons and banquets where the corporate sponsors would have their top clients having lunch with the players. Then there are events for the fans that traveled to the bowl city, promoting the sponsors of the game. As much as a playoff system is desirable to the casual fan, there would be less opportunities for the sponsors to promote their businesses (which they pay big money for).

In a playoff system, the teams would treat the games much like they treat a road game and show up the day before the game. Fans would have trouble travelling to multiple games (if their teams advanced), therefore attendance would be less and the opportunities for marketing events for the sponsors would be less. You can see this effect in action at the conference championship games where the games rarely sellout due to the short notice of which teams will be playing in the game. Most college fans cannot make travel arrangements and take off from work on short notice for such games.

In the FCS division, teams play in their home stadiums during the playoffs. While this insures good attendance, from a marketing perspective, it does not give potential sponsors a week of marketing opportunities leading up to the game. Unfortunately, the bowl system generates a ton of money to the FBS division and leaves us with the system that we have today.

It goes without saying that money is the deciding factor in all of this. The bowls and their sponsors won't give it up without a fight. There are ways that sponsors could be involved in the playoff picture that would help them keep a lot of their expected revenues.

I think the Sun Belt conference is the weakest. I guess if they couldn't disband it to other conferences, they could have a play in game. Take the winner of that conference vs. the lowest BCS ranked non conference winning 8th seed team.

Colonel I agree, there has to be a way. A company could buy a sponsorship per game for the playoff tournament. The college stadiums could name themselves after corporations if they have to- to get this done. They can put more advertisement bill boards in the stadiums as well.

They could still find a way to take the top 32 teams that didn't make the "Playoff Madness" tournament and get them in some nice sponsored bowl game match ups that fans would want to watch (16 games). Sundays might not be best b/c of the NFL. Maybe they could run 2 bowl games a day (on Fridays and Tuesdays) with one game on Sunday (picking the best Sunday for 2 games). If the FBS stays at 120 teams as it should- this would mean that a team would have to be in the top 40% to play in the post-season. None of this majority of teams getting in garbage.
