NBA Draft net worse than Rivals

While watching Duke vs. Wake Forest ranked 8th, I wondered if NBA Draft net ( which should be renamed Nation of Islam NBA Draft net) finally felt Jon Scheyer was worthy enough to be rated in their top fifty NCAA juniors. Not only is Scheyer not ranked in the top fifty Juniors, he is also not ranked among the "honorable mention" which is 51 to 75th. This is someone who currently has 22 points against the 8th ranked team and is ranked 22th NCAA junior by Draft Express.Edited by: jimlongstreet

The problem with those profile websites is for a white player to get noticed, he has to average 18-25 points a game for at least 2 years, and he has to do so from a big name college program.

DraftExpress is kinder in mentioning white ballers from small college programs. A blackie averaging 15 points at least gets noticed by NBADraft.net no matter what, it's plain absolute bias all over.

Jon Scheyer to me is a strong and worthy NBA draft prospect, though his numbers aren't off the charts. Not being mentioned at all in any NBA draft position is really disturbing for a player of his caliber.

Totally agree. I think he'll come out next year, but if he comes out this year he'd be worth being picked even very late 1st round (although it's a strong guard class compared to Big Men) or top of the 2nd, with the way he has picked it up recently. He had struggled a bit early in the season when I had watched him, but looks to have settled down. He plays the top competition in the land for a HUGE program and has a perfect form shooting stroke. I don't like him nearly as much as some other white guards though mentioned in my Caste Free Thread.

NBAdraft.net does have Budinger ranked much higher than Draftexpress though. Draftexpress is nuts to have Chase so low, especially with his play the last 2 weeks since the trampling incident!

Scheyer finished with 30 against the 8th ranked team Wake Forest whose best players are their guards. Scheyer has averaged almost 20 points a game in the past 5 games including outscoring Henderson against NC. Scheyer is only the 3rd option on offense . If he were the first his scoring totals would be higher. Henderson will go pro in this year's draft. Without Henderson, Scheyer's scoring should go up.

He does everything well. Even the jock sniffing announcers admit Scheyer is a better defender than Henderson. Of course , like "tight hips" in football, being a defensive liability is always used as the major excuse for not allowing whites to play in the NBA. Another usual excuse is white guards aren't "strong" and always lack "lateral quickness". I saw Scheyer play in person. He is a very solid 6'5" or 6'5 1/2" so the strength, lateral quickness and or defense doesn't fly with Scheyer. So why would Nation of Islam Draft net.feel Scheyer isn't among the top 75 juniors in the NCAA? except lack of melanin.

They list such "future hall of famers" (sarcasm) as Marcus Blakely of Vermont and Edwin Ubiles of Siena. These 2 wouldn't get any playing time with Duke .Coach K knows how good Scheyer is. He plays the most minutes on the team.

He's a good defender and athletic for sure, but doesn't seem as creative on offense with the ball as a guy like Cummard from BYU. But I should really see Cummard more than once to know for sure. Sheyer's ball handling also seems solid, but could use work. Maybe he's a little like Budinger that way, but Chase is more of a complete and utter athletic freak. When you become a great ball handler, you usually get more creative on offense. BTW: Budinger is another guy who has really stepped it up to a new level of late! He's shooting a great 48% now for a Swing-man!Edited by: ToughJ.Riggins

In NBA draftnet's mock drafts they do have 10 whites listed for the mock 2010 1st round though. Their mock drafts fluctuate alot depending on foreign players, and it is very unpredictable if some of these European players will ever enter the NBA draft.

Scheyer is Duke's best perimeter defender. period. if Scheyer makes it to the NBA, it will be as a point guard.

comparing Lee Cummard and Jon Scheyer is comparing apples to oranges. they are similar in only 3 characteristics: they are both white, they both play excellent defense, and they are both excellent all-around players.

the 6-8 Cummard is a long, very athletic wing who plays above the rim on both ends of the floor and is a dominant scorer and rebounder. he is a true NBA shooting guard.

Scheyer isn't nearly the athlete Cummard is, nor does he have the size, but he is a damn good basketball player in his own right. if the NBA gives him a look, though, it will be as a point guard, because this season he has shown the ability to lead a team from the one while guarding smaller, quicker guards with his excellent length.

Cummard and Budinger are very similar in build and athleticism, though Cummard brings more on the glass and on the defensive end come game time.

I wasn't impressed with Scheyer's 40% flat FG%, but I think he's improving the past few weeks. Budinger is an athletic freak and has become a good shooter, but is only an average ball handler as of now; I think he will keep improving though. Budinger could be a fabulous penetrator to the hoop if he became a great ball handler. He gets a lot of his inside points thorough passes when cutting to the hoop. He's certainly athletic enough for put-backs. Budinger is also a good passer.

Whenever I saw Duke; Scheyer always looks more athletic playing Defense. The games I saw offensively he didn't penetrate inside with the ball often and most of his shots came from just running off screens and finding open space for jump shots. That's why I wondered if it was because his ball handling needs improvement. That may not be the case since he is running the point even more than Paulus now. Even Smith's (who coach K seemed to love in early season) minutes have been cut back. Scheyer must be pretty athletic to guard some of the smaller slashers in the ACC.Edited by: ToughJ.Riggins

Jon Scheyer needs to develop a bit more physical toughness on the offensive end, like someone named Manu Ginobili. His defense is already excellent, especially on the perimeter. I view him more as a combo guard, because it's not natural for him to run the point, although he has taken more of that responsibility this season. He would then be more like Brent Barry. Scheyer could also be more like Leandro Barbosa, but Barbosa is just faster.

Lee Cummard is more like either Hedo Tukoglu, Brent Barry or Andrei Kirlenko, thanks to his incredible athleticism, and all-around game. I could go as high as comparing him to Josh Smith. Like Smith, and Kirilenko, Cummard is a steal and block waiting to happen. He is very much a guard-forward.

Chase Budinger has a game that is very similar to either Vince Carter or Andre Igoudala. His athletic all-around game corroborates my comparison. I also can compare Hedo Turkoglu to Budinger, although Bud is many times more athletic, but it's based more on all-around game style. Budinger is likely a guard-forward also, just like Lee Cummard.Edited by: j41181

Even though white guys are capable of being great individual talents, they shine at their best as system players. It's after all a team sport, no one can single-handedly make a team successful or win a championship. Even greats like Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, Shaq, Olajuwon, and of course, Larry Bird, needed reliable teammates for great teamwork and chemistry.

Nash needed reliable teammates to get his two MVP's, and so did Dirk, the reason many college whites like Redick, Van Horn, and Morrison struggle in the NBA is because: there are hardly any teams that have a system that some how emulates the kind of team system they enjoyed in college.

My instincts tell me that guys like Hansbrough, Harangody, Budinger, Cummard,....etc., are going to have several rough and tough moments as NBA rookies and sophomores. It's due to the team system difference of the NBA and College hoops.

j41181,

it's like you were in my head with your breakdown's of Scheyer, Cummard, and Budinger. excellent job, man.

and your point about "teams" being more important than individual "players" is correct, as well. good insights, mate.

also, i should probably point out that Scheyer is still just a junior.

Thanks, JC!!

Scheyer will need another year to improve his NBA chances.

This last post was a great one. You explained this very eloquently, but more pithy than I could.
