It only feels appropriate that this warrants its own thread.

Anyway, word is Bruno Hortelano will drop the 100m in Rio to focus solely on the 200m. I fully expect him to make the final this year.

I think the 200m will be interesting this year. Gemili, Guliyev, and Hortelano should all have a shot at qualifying for the final. I think Lemaitre still stands a chance even with his recent regression, just based upon the natural talent he possesses.

That's the main Olympics thread, but ones like this one for individual sports is fine.

I agree on Hortelano he is looking great, I like the fact he is having fun and seems relaxed before a race. Even though I am a Canadian I will be cheering for him as we have no White sprinters competing at Rio in the 110/200m.

It is top 2 in each heat, plus top 8 overall based on time that advance, for reference.

Also, Ewa Swoboda of Poland looked terrific in her 100m yesterday narrowly taking second in it by .01 at the age of 19.

Reus runs poorly.

Taftian of Iran and Su of China look like they may be time qualifiers.

A Chinese sprinter I'm not familiar with takes heat 2.

Wont go much further, but hopefully the time is a little more promising for the 200...I'm going to lay low on Lemaitre, no need to repeat myself.

Lemaitre looked terrible in his heat for the first 70m, he briefly showed some speed endurance around 70m to close which is good, while the top 2 in this heat coasted the last 5-6 metres, he will have to run sub 10 to make finals, based on his form I do not think he is any where near that time. I hope he does make it out of the semi's but reality is a bitch...

Reus choked again.......

USA women's water polo has a black goalie. I watched for 30 seconds before the announcers raved about her wingspan and affleticism. It's so predictable...

What. The. Hell.

Are there no sports that blacks do not dominate according to the Caste Whores?

totally predictable I'm afraid to say. That's why his "10.0 whatevers" mean nothing to me when I see them.
The Australian girl I'd compared him with several weeks back was also predictable and much worse with her 11.74. I've felt it necessary to write to Athletics Australia to point out her ongoing failures and recommend they rethink their selection criteria. Embarrassing woman.

Meanwhile in the 400 Maslak and a Polish guy struggle forward into the semis as the two slowest qualifiers of 24. No other European.
UPDATE: no, there's also another European guy I missed -Janezic form Slovenia who just PB'd in his semi with 45.07 and Maslak's 45.06

Paval Maslak is the best indoor 400 meter sprinter in the world. He has won gold medals at the last two world indoor championships. His style for whatever reason doesn't translate to the outdoors 400! Very strange.

Julian Reus drives me crazy. The kid has the physical talent but like Lemaitre lacks the mental confidence. It has to be
him and his nerves. We know he is in shape. I cannot believe that in 2016 all of those sub 10.10's are rigged. He is running those times but he has no confidence outside his country. I cannot defend him any longer as far as the intl races and major championships go. His record speaks for itself. It's just very sad as he is so damn talented. He needs a psyhchologist.

Breen was awful. Happy to see Schippers win her heat and my new crush Ewa Swobada finish 2nd in her heat.

Lemaitre like Reus ???

Lemaitre won a lot of titles, medals, he ran several major championship final... his mental is good

the mental confidence is a big problem for Reus , he is worse than Powell with this problem

Ok I will agree it wasn't fair to Lemaitre to say that. Lemaitre does seem to lack confidence
the last 3 or 4 years but he is at alot high level talent wise physically/mentally than Reus.

Reus is as strange a sprinter as I've ever seen. No one can understand it. Not even his own coach!

It would be interesting to know his analysis about his race

Reus performance was seriously pathetic.
He has never (and I do mean Never) performed well in an international competition.
To come to the Olympics with several near 10 flat times, and then run a 10.34 in the heats, is indefensible.
He was 45th of the 69 sprinters in the heats.
He is an incredible choke.
The more he performs well in Germany and poorly internationally, the more he and his fast times in Germany, look very suspect.
