It's early I know, but they are already running outdoors in Australia.
Sally Pearson, the Olympic 100m hurdles champion opened her season with a great 200m time of 23.51 on a wet track.
I'm very happy she's off to a good start, and hope to see more great things from her this year.

Hanno Engelbrecht of South Africa ran a 10.24 100m.
I never heard of this guy. Either he is young or new to the sport or both. Let's hope for more good news from him.

Another new name, Tim Leathart of Australia. He won the 100m at the Sydney Track Classic today in 10.24.
He came 3rd in the 200m in 20.71.
Meanwhile, Melissa Breen won the 100m in 11.25 and the 200m in 23.12. Both very good times.

Great times by Leathart. We have to get alot more information about this kid. Quality times indeed. Maybe we will have another Aussie to root for other than Watt and Pearson. I would love to see them get some competetive sprinters again. Ever since they cut their athletics funding, it all went down hill.

Soloman is enrolled at Stanford.
We should be seeing him as soon as the outdoor collegiate season starts.

That is good to hear Australia though receding lately with the funding is putting out a few sprinters again.
19 year old Nicholas Hough also ran a 20.76 200 meters earlier this year so at least with Leathart and Hough Australia has a little going for them again in the sprints.
I long for the days of Matt Shirvington, Dean Capobianco, Tim Jackson, Paul DiBella, Damian Marsh and Daniel Batman. 4 of these 6 guys ran 10.1 or better in the 100 meters at one time or another.

Jonathon Cabral of Oregon opened his outdoor season with a meet record of 13.68 in men's hurdles at the Oregon preview meet.
He will take the mantle from Barrett Nugent as the best white collegiate hurdler in the US.
Dario Horvat of Grand Canyon and Croatia opened his season with a nice 10.32 100 meter time in Arizona.

Dario Horvat is one to keep a close eye on. The 10.32 he opened up with came with no wind. He did that all on his own. This kid just barely turned 22 so he has plenty of time to progress. My only complaint is that he ended up at a smaller four year school like Grand Canyon University. I'm not sure is he will get the top level coaching that he would have at other schools. At least the weather is great for training. I'm excited to see how he does in his freshman year. If his opener is any indication, he should have a great year!

When I said this I was being serious as this kid has talent. Well he just missed a new personal best a few days ago. Dario ran a blistering
time of 10.18 but the wind was 2.1 so it was just barely overy the 2.0 limit that is allowed in track. Such a shame. It reminds me of Craig Pickering when he ran a 10.08 to finish 2nd to Usain Bolt but the wind was barely over the limit and it didn't count. Dario is a huge talent and the personal bests will come. I just hope the college season doesn't burn him out so much that he can't run a few meets in the summer. I wonder if Dario is running at the Sun Angel Track Classis this weekend in Tempe, AZ? That is where Kilty ran a 10.15 last year. It's a fast track and since Horvat goes to school at Grand Canyon College, I'm hoping he will run there.

A couple of college sprinters you guys haven't heard of are freshman Chris Strup of Loyola and Connor Mccarthy of Harvard. Both guys looked really good at the Florida Relays today in different heats. Mccarth won his race despite trailing by a several meters due to a horrible start but he closed like a freight train and won. Strup finished 3rd and he is only a freshman. Ambler and Leblanc will both very average today but it's early in the season.

Hey guys. I found an interesting article about Australian Sprinters. Asafa Powell believes they can compete with the best. He says that white guys can run as good as anyone if they put in the hard work. I already know that but many people don't and they believe in the stereotypes. I give Powell credit for going on record and saying this. It shows he is a descent guy and doesn't have to hate whites like many others do. Here is the link to the article.

The Australian Track and Field Championships are this weekend. Here is a quick article and the youngsters Swain and Geddes look good so far! Hoping for some new personal bests tommorow.

Various results from yesterday:

Marybeth Sant swept the 100 and 200 at the Oregon relays. Times: 11.8 and 24.31. I haven't seen a video, but the times do indicate she won both races by wide margins.

Hannah Cunliffe also competed at the relays, but she ran against in the college division, despite being a high school junior. She finished second in both the 100 and 200 (11.91 and 24.11).

It's about time we saw Cunliffe v. Sant head to head. Sant had a tailwind in both races, though she had no competition pushing her. Cunliffe had better competition but ran both races into strong headwinds.

In other news, Jeremy Wariner ran his first 400 of the season. I don't have the time handy, but it was somewhat overwhelming, I think around 45.7 for second place. That said, it was better than the 400's run by Tyson Gay and Tony McQuay at another event.

In the men's 800, Sowinski continues to look great. In a stacked field at Mt. Sac (this was the most anticipated race of the weekend), he essentially tied for first. He put on a massive kick, and the announcers thought he had won, but he was awarded second.

Finally, Laura Roesler, who has dazzled with her ridiculous 400-1500 range, ran the second fastest 800 in the world this year so far: 2:01:75. She's just too talented. Good video. Towards the end, the professional runners are kicking with all they have and starting to pass her, when Laura, pretty as you please, seems to effortless kick into a gear that the professionals don't even have and re-pass them for the win. Here's the video:

More results from this weekend:
I think I was most impressed by the women sprinters at the Mt Sac Relays:
Georganne Moline (Arizona) ran 23.37 in the 200m - very fast. She also won her speciality, the 400m hurdles in 55.70.
Jenna Prandini (Oregon) continues to impress and is running with the big girls these days. She ran 11.31 in the 100m and 23.59 in the 200m.
Emily Blok (UNLV) ran 23.66 in the 200m and 11.73 (-1.2) in the 100m.
Eileen Gehring (Colorado) 23.80 200m and 53.23 400m.
Very impressive work. I can't remember this many top white women sprinters in the collegiate ranks in recent times.

Meanwhile, at the Oregon Relays Jonathan Cabral continues to impress in the 110m hurdles, winning in 13.56.
Elijah Greer won the 800m in an NCAA leading time of 1:46.20.

Steve Solomon the teenage Australian Olympian won the 400m at the Cal-Stanford dual meet in 46.91. Tom Blocker of Cal won the 100m and 200m. So white sprinters took 1st place in all 3 sprints at that meet.

Barrett Nugent ran 13.72 for 110m hurdles at LSU. It is his first year running as a non-collegian.

Just noticed some Europeans ran in a meet in Florida this week.

Danny Talbot of Britain ran a solid 20.67 in the 200m.

Fellow Brits Andy Robertson and Greg Cackett along with Martin Keller of Germany all ran 10.53 for the 100m. I would have expected better from all of them.

Wariner 45.35 at the Drake Relays. Lugeulin Santos took 1st in 44.74, so Wariner was soundly beaten. Still his time is not bad....but not great either.
