Caste Football Looks at the 2006 American League

In football, mostly black players are recruited by the elite 1-A programs with many superb white high school players shut out, which is why blacks go on to dominate the NFL. College baseball would love to have more black players participating, but whites are dominating American baseball, to the point that well over 95 percent of the best college players are white.

However, unlike football, Major League Baseball commits huge resources to developing and signing non-American players. Scouts are sent swarming through the Dominican Republic and other hispanic baseball hotbeds, and "baseball academies" continue to be built outside the U.S.

Inside the U.S., large resources are devoted to the mostly fruitless cause of developing black American players, again with academies, as well as many inner city programs paid for by MLB. However, there are no baseball academies in mostly white areas, nor are there any special programs to develop talent in suburban areas or in poor rural areas. Baseball is the all-American game, but the powers that be, both in baseball and society in general, are interested in making it as "diverse" as possible, as they are with any sport that whites dominate.

Major League Baseball is about 60 percent white, 30 percent hispanic, 9 percent American Negro, and 1 percent Asian. The black percentage is only one-third what it was 30 years ago, but relatively few sports fan have noticed, so well trained are they by the media to see "black supremacy" in sports everywhere.

The following is a short round-up of each American League team's prospective white starters beginning the 2006 season.

Yankees: Once again, the world's best known baseball team has just one everyday white starter, 1B Jason Giambi. Perhaps baseball's best all-around hitter from 1999 through 2003, Giambi was all but buried as a player after a terrible, injury-plagued 2004 and then admitting to steroid use. Yankee fans had given Giambi a hard time from the time he signed with New York in 2002 — as white fans are especially prone to do with white players on mostly non-white teams — but Giambi had a very strong second half in '05 and looks set to re-establish himself as one of the sport's pre-eminent stars. CF Johnny Damon was the big off-season acquisition, moving over from arch-rival Boston. Damon is half-white and half-Thai. The starting staff is anchored by all-time great Randy Johnson, one of the most amazing athletes ever given that pitchers over 6-6 had rarely had any success before the 6-10 Johnson came along. With a career record of 263-136 at the age of 42, Johnson has only a very outside shot of reaching the 300 win milestone. Since 1993 Johnson is 233-99, an incredible run of success. He is also the best strikeout artist ever though he will never get close to Nolan Ryan's career mark of 5,714, one of baseball's untouchable records. 37-year-old Mike Mussina has put together an excellent career, with a lifetime mark of 224-127. He has an outside shot at the Hall of Fame if he can pitch effectively into his early 40s. Carl Pavano is the Yankees' third white starter.

Red Sox: The Red Sox feature a strong, all-white starting rotation led by Curt Schilling, the 39-year-old who has three 20-win seasons and 192 career wins. David Wells, this generation's answer to Mickey Lolich, is nearly 43 and has 227 lifetime wins. Knuckleballer Tim Wakefield has 144 wins. The other two starters are Matt Clement and the very talented Josh Beckett. Keith Foulke is the closer. The starting position players are RF Trot Nixon, 1B Kevin Youkilis, 2B Mark Loretta, and C Jason Varitek. 3B Mike Lowell is Puerto Rican but appears to be of mostly or all European extraction.

Blue Jays: For most of their history, Toronto usually had as few white players as any team in baseball, but that has changed dramatically the past few seasons. Seven of the Blue Jays' nine everyday starters (counting the DH) are white beginning the '06 season, as is most of the pitching staff. Slugging 3B Troy Glaus was a big off-season pickup, coming over from Arizona. Following down years in '03 and '04, Glaus hit 37 homers last year after having corrective eye laser surgery. He hit over 40 home runs twice for the Angels, including leading the AL with 47 in 2000. Frank Catalanotto starts in left, Eric Hinske is the right fielder, Russ Adams is the starting shortstop, Aaron Hill is the 2B, Lyle Overbay is the 1B after being acquired from Milwaukee, and Shea Hillenbrand is the main DH. 2003 Cy Young Award winner Roy Halladay anchors the starting staff, and is joined by A. J. Burnett, Ted Lilly, and Josh Towers. B.J. Ryan is the closer.

Orioles: The Birds have four everyday white starters including DH Jeff Conine, an improvement over recent seasons. 2B Brian Roberts was one of the big surprises in MLB last season, hitting .314 with 18 HR, 73 RBIs, and 27 stolen bases along with being an excellent fielder. He is joined by LF Kevin Millar, RF Jay Gibbons, and DH Conine. Kris Benson and Erik Bedard are the only two white starting pitchers. Chris Ray is the closer.

Devil Rays: The seemingly eternally bottom-feeding Devil Rays feature two very talented players in CF Rocco Baldelli and 3B Aubrey Huff. Still just 24 years old, Baldelli is attempting a comeback after missing all of 2005 because of injury. Huff has averaged over 100 RBIs the past three seasons. The first baseman is Travis Lee and the catcher is Toby Hall. The all-white starting staff consists of Scott Kazmir, Casey Fossum, Mark Hendrickson, Doug Waechter, and Seth McClung.

Twins: St. Paul native Joe Mauer is the starting catcher. He hit .294 in '05 in his first full season with the Twins. He is expected to become a premier player at his position. The starting RF is Michael Cuddyer, Justin Morneau starts at first, and the shortstop is Jason Bartlett. The Twins have three white starting pitchers — Brad Radke, Kyle Lohse, and Scott Baker. Joe Nathan is the closer.

White Sox: The reigning world champs reached that lofty plateau after making wholesale changes following the '04 season, changes that made the team white-friendly for the first time in many seasons. This year's edition is led World Series hero Paul Konerko, who is coming off back-to-back 40 HR seasons. LF Scott Podsednik finished second in the AL in stolen bases in '05 after becoming the first white man to lead both leagues in half a century in '04. In his three full seasons in the bigs, Podsednik has stolen 43, 70 and 59 bases. The DH is Jim Thome, who has 430 career homers and was coming off seasons of 49, 52, 47 and 42 before missing most of 2005 with an injury while with the Phillies. The catcher is A.J. Pierzynski, Joe Crede is the 3B, and Brian Anderson is the center fielder. Mark Buehrle and Jon Garland are two excellent starting pitchers. The other three starters are hispanics. Fireballer Bobby Jenks is the closer.

Royals: Veteran Mike Sweeney switches to DH this season. He has a .304 lifetime average. He is joined by three other white starters — 1B Doug Mientkiewicz, 2B Mark Grudzielanek, and C John Buck. Three whites are among the starting pitchers — Scott Elarton, Joe Mays, and Jeremy Affeldt.

Indians: CF Grady Sizemore may or may not have a black father. If he does, he is considered black by American standards. If he is white, the Indians have six white position starters, led by budding superstar Travis Hafner, who hit .305 with 33 homers and 108 ribbies in 2005. Jason Michaels is the LF, Casey Blake is the RF, Ben Broussard is the 1B, and Aaron Boone is the 3B. The Tribe sports four white starting pitchers — Jake Westbrook, Cliff Lee, Paul Byrd, and Jason Johnson. Bob Wickman is the closer.

Tigers: Detroit has just two white everyday starters — 1B Chris Shelton and 3B Brandon Inge. The bright spot is the all-white starting pitching staff led by 41-year-old Kenny Rogers, who is joined by Jeremy Bonderman, Mike Maroth, Nate Robertson and Justin Verlander. Todd Jones is the closer.

Athletics: The A's have ranged from almost all-white to almost all non-white in recent years as they have mastered the art of fielding highly competitive low-budget teams, but have usually trended toward being one of the whiter teams, and this year is no exception as Oakland has six white starting position players. SS Bobby Crosby followed up his Rookie of the Year '04 campaign with an injury-marred '05 but is healthy now. He is joined in the infield by 2B Mark Ellis, 1B Dan Johnson, and veteran catcher Jason Kendall, who has a .302 lifetime batting average and exemplifies the meaning of all-out hustle. Mark Kotsay is the CF, with Nick Swisher starting in left. Barry Zito (86-53 lifetime) is the last of the A's "Big Three" starters still with the team. Rich Harden, Dan Haren, and Joe Blanton are projected starters along with Zito. Huston Street is the closer.

Angels: The nearly all-white '02 world champs are just a distant memory now, as the Angels have become a hispanic-dominated team per the orders of their hispanic owner, Arte Moreno. Darin Erstad, an excellent all-around player, is the center fielder, joined by 1B Casey Kotchman, 2B Adam Kennedy, and C Jeff Mathis. John Lackey and Jeff Weaver are the only white starting pitchers.

Mariners: When the first three hitters in the lineup are named Suzuki, Johjima and Ibanez, that gives a pretty good indication of the direction of Seattle, who start only two whites — 1B Richie Sexson and CF Jeremy Reed. Sexson smashed 39 homers and knocked in 121 runners last year in his first season with the team. The ageless Jamie Moyer has gotten better as he has gotten older and went 13-7 in '05. Jarrod Washburn is the only other white starting pitcher.

Rangers: Though they have only two white starting pitchers — Kevin Millwood and Adam Eaton — the Rangers begin the 2006 season with an all-white everyday lineup! Shortstop Michael Young's batting average has gone up every season, leading to the AL batting championship in 2005 (.331) and a league-leading 221 hits. 25-year-old 3B Hank Blalock is an emerging star, having hit at least 25 homers in each of the past three seasons. The starting outfield consists of RF Kevin Mench, CF Brad Wilkerson, and LF David Dellucci. Ian Kinsler is the 2B, big Mark Teixeira (.301/43/144) had a superstar season in '05 and is the 1B, Rod Barajas is the catcher, with Phil Nevin the DH. <
