Our New Heroes?

(2/10/05) New England quarterback Tom Brady has to be one of the most special athletes to come along in some time. As a second year player he took over from an injured Pro Bowl quarterback, Drew Bledsoe, and led the New England Patriots to a Super Bowl win. He won it again last year and this year led his team to its third Super Bowl win in four years.

Brady is a clean-cut kid from California, handsome in an All-American kind of way. As a collegiate he quarterbacked for perhaps the most storied football program in America, the University of Michigan Wolverines. He was snubbed on draft day, not being picked until the 6th round. Despite that he will most likely be in the pro football Hall of Fame some day.

In any other time in American history Tom Brady would be the face of America. He would be the subject of endless endorsements, press scrutiny and the target of affection for millions of girls. Kids would want to grow up to be like him and their fathers would envy him. He would be acclaimed as a hero. He should be as popular as Mickey Mantle was in his hey-day.

America often publicizes the best of their young men and offer them up for public consumption. The idea is to put forward positive role models since they embody the qualities a culture wants to inculcate into its people. It has always been so. Before the rise of sports there were other "heroes" to celebrate, explorers such as Daniel Boone or John Fremont, military heroes like Zachary Taylor, Audie Murphy and Dwight Eisenhower. Pioneers and inventors like Charles Lindbergh and Thomas Edison. All of these men displayed the qualities that Americans saw as the best in themselves and by extension the best in the world.

There is no question that this is a valuable trait in human behavior. The celebration of a culture's best sends important information to youngsters of what is expected of them. It sends a message to other cultures of what to expect from that culture. That Tom Brady is not more widely acclaimed and is not the face of America says more about our culture to our children and the other people of the world then we care to imagine.

Tom Brady was not even the most popular quarterback in this year's Super Bowl. Philadelphia Eagles QB Donovan McNabb received far more press attention, adulation, and endorsements than Brady. McNabb is a decent player who has shown an inability in the past to win the big game, exactly the opposite of Tom Brady. In today's world Donovan McNabb is more the face of America then Tom Brady.

McNabb is a decent fellow by most accounts. He is the latest fad in pro football, an affirmative action QB who has used his mismatched skills for the position to finally stumble his way into the big game. It is an understatement to say Donovan McNabb is different then Tom Brady. While Brady appears to be the boy next door with his classic white American good looks, McNabb looks nearly the polar opposite. Big afro, flattened nose, very large lips.

This is not said to insult McNabb unless you consider the factual accounting of his looks to be insulting. But the "face" that McNabb represents is typical of a small portion of the U.S. population. And it is a portion of that population that suffers from serious cultural dysfunctions. A country that professes to celebrate its heroes should select someone that looks like a member of the culture of accomplishment, not a member of a culture of violence and pathology.

The Super Bowl featured many black athletes. With the exception of Brady almost every player that touched the ball looked much like McNabb. The ceremonial coin-toss before the game with captains from each team looked like a confrontation between the Crypts and the Bloods what with the black football player preference to look as much like a gangster as possible.

Why is the NFL so slanted toward the black athlete? What is it about the black athlete that is so attractive to the people that provide professional football as entertainment? We are told that it is purely a matter of athleticism. That every black player no matter how poorly trained, poorly motivated, or poorly behaved is better then any white athlete no matter how highly skilled, motivated, or behaved. This is a difficult proposition to believe. It flies in the face of logic as well as observation.

Yet nearly all of the coaches, scouts, GMs, reporters, and other football people are white. Why would they select virtually all black players if there were qualified whites? One look at the differences between McNabb and Brady provides the answer. Football can be a violent and brutal game. Those players who appear to be capable of violence and brutality have an advantage. The more animalistic you look then the more intimidating you will appear. For those that select the players there is a belief that having more intimidating looking players will translate into victory.

Take the average football coach or scout. He is a middle aged, paunchy, white male. Who is he likely to see as more intimidating? A tattooed, pierced, black player that is dressed like a gangsta or someone that looks like Tom Brady? The choice: kid next door or someone who looks like one of the many gangsters and criminals from the nightly news. Since coaches want an edge they will tend to select people that are scary, and to the men that do the selecting there are no more scary people than the black kids that come out of American ghettoes.

A visit to a football combine or scouting session makes this point. At those events you will find many aging white men milling about gathering information on the mostly black players. They will be recording their speeds at various drills and the amount of weight they can lift. Some of the athletes will be shirtless so the scouts can see the results of their efforts in the weight room. One almost expects them to look in their mouth and check their teeth as any wise investor in livestock might.

A scouting session of this type resembles nothing more then a slavery auction circa 1750. A bunch of white overseers examining a lineup of black males to see which ones are the most fit for the physical work to be done. One would expect them to intentionally, if not subconsciously, avoid selecting white players in this venue. They might even identify with the few white players that are present at these things and not want them to be a part of the demeaning and degrading nature of the business.

Thus only a certain type of white player makes the NFL, the Tom Brady type of player who is usually selected for the quarterback position. These players are picked for their football knowledge; the only physical requirement asked is that they be tall so they can see over the linemen. It is no coincidence that these quarterback types are the only players that resemble the head coaches and offensive coordinators that they work with. The coaches see the quarterback as an on-field extension of themselves and thus select players that look like them and with whom they can identify.

Few white players are selected elsewhere. Mainly the offensive line, tight end and linebacker. Many of these players opt for the one look that white men can adopt that is considered intimidating: the biker look. Traditionally, motorcycle gang members are the most violent of white men. Football players cash in on this look to try and match the intimidating gangsta look of the black football players.

Modern football has become a medium whereby middle aged white men select the most intimidating and scary people they can find (almost always inner-city blacks) to populate their football teams. That means the most violent and criminally inclined young men from a small minority of our people are the ones that are honored as our heroes. On Super Bowl Sunday the rest of the world gets to see just who America thinks is worthy of our public acclaim. They are the people that represent the values we hold dear. Is it any wonder why the world dislikes Americans?
