i don't know how much of a response you'll get on a soccer thread CW, 'cause i'm about the only other guy on here who cares much about the beautiful game...

man, it's hard to say who's gonna win the World Cup, because anything can happen with a tourney that has this many phenomenal players, but i'll hazard a guess or two.

obviously Brazil is the favorite. those guys are amazing! but i don't think they'll do it. i like Germany to win, with Miroslav Klose up front they are dynamite, and of course they have the home field advantage...although taking Kahn out of the net was surprising to me.

i expect the usual suspects to make a run, with England being my next pick, although injuries to Owen and Rooney leave much in doubt. they are very deep.

my dark horse to make a run is the Czech Republic with aging, but still dangerous, midfielder and 2003 European Footballer of the Year Pavel Nedved and striker Jan Koller who is reportedly recovered from surgery to repair knee ligaments.

i would have mentioned the Ukraine (with striker Andriy Shevchenko. but he has a knee injury, and i don't know how bad it is) and Italy, but they are currently really messed up with a big-time scandal. so the door is open for the U.S. to once again surprise the soccer world.

i feel that the U.S. team could have been stronger. some of the personnel decisions coach Bruce Arena made confused me, but i think if we survive and advance from a very tough opening round group (which includes both Italy and the Czech Republic) then we will make a very good run.

on a side note, i don't understand how they set up the opening round groups, but we sure drew a bad one. you would have thought we'd get a little more respect since our world rankning is so high (although, i must admit #4 in the world is much too high at this point), but this group is killer. with only Ghana being a chump, any of the other three teams could advance to the semis if they catch a few breaks.
