Room Brightening Smiles

One of the many things that occurred to me over the last few years is that every black athlete is described as having a "room brightening smile" or some variation thereof. Every afflete has a "room brightening smile" but no non-black athlete ever has been described as such by the corporate media or its announcers.

Now, I feel bad for Kenny McKinley (the Broncos player who just killed himself) but take a look at this reporting. I swear that the "room brightening smile" adjective is mandatory for reporters, announcers and coaches.

"Kenny had a promising future on the football field, but more importantly, he was a great teammate whose smile and personality could light up the room," Denver head coach Josh McDaniels said."

Later on in the story the ol' caste coach proclaimed:

"I saw him here. He came to the Georgia game. He seemed in good spirits," Spurrier said, according to The Post and Courier in Charleston, S.C.. "He had a great smile, like he always had."

The "room brigntening smile" phenomenom has been well documented here, originally by the esteemed Don Wassall who noted this peculiar fascination of the media years ago. The thesis was expanded by yours truly who put forth the postulate that the "room brightening smile" was actually the modern PC version of "watermelon grin" that was once an ubiquitous reference to any negro with a big smile.

This is an example of the media continuing to use racist language but switching it so that it becomes a "positive". The usage is so common that we often refer to it here in a humorous vein.

It IS used everywhere. I guess they can't think of anything else worthwhile to say about a guy. Think about that, is that what you would like people to remember you for--yes he's dead but he had a nice smile--seems so lame that it's really a put down.

There are many variations on the theme too. "room brighting smile", "1000-watt smile", "smile that lights up the room", I guess they don't realize that they are making a comment on the fact that black people's teeth look so white in comparison to their dark skin.

How come you never hear anyone say something like, gee his smile is so bright you could take him into a dark room and tell him a joke and you'd be able to see your way around!

Your explanations and opinions of this peculiar verbal fad are absolutely accurate.

I used to think of the worn-out phrase "Room Brightening Smile"Â￾ as one of the precious few relics of the media's latent racism (as you said, "Watermelon Grin"Â￾) towards blacks. Then I realized than no amount of anti-black idiom has been permitted for decades.

I now believe the phrase is deliberately repeated in order to continually mention the color contrast of black skin against white teeth. Said contrast cannot be achieved by whites, thus, the always-condescending "black is beautiful"Â￾ fallacy continues.

This is pretty embarrassing. It is the mark not of a beta male but of an omega male.

I have never seen or heard of Karl Greenfeld but you just know he is a scared little nebbish. A simpering, stuttering puny little man who never ever fought back when he was picked on as a kid.

I never have and I doubt such an example exists.

Very true, and this was proven to me once again yesterday.

I was watching PTI, and it turns out that Bill Simmons was sitting in for Mike Wilbon. I assume most people know who Simmons is, but if not, I can give you an elevator pitch: He's vehemently anti-white sports columnist for ESPN.com

Anyway, until yesterday, I had never seen what he looks like (except that small head-shot next to his columns), nor had I heard him speak.

Well, Bill Simmons is a little b*tch-man. He's quite small in stature, with small hands, a tiny neck, and a very effeminate, girly voice. In fact, if you close your eyes and listen, you'll think it's a 12-year old boy talking.

He was probably picked on quite a bit growing up, never had a shot to play any sports, was extremely jealous of all the white kids who did play varsity sports, and therefore, his only role models were most likely the affletes he saw on TV, whom he idolized and worshipped, which he still does today. And now that he has a forum to spew his drivel, he hardly ever holds back in mocking, insulting, and putting down white athletes.

He's a textbook definition of a DWF, and easily represents where 90% of American sports-writers come from these days.

Once I learned of this strange fact I really see it everywhere now. Basically, every white coach, reporter, announcer, fan, teammate is going to compliment a black man on his smile.

Strange country we live in. Can you imagine the average white man even 40 years ago complimenting a black man on his smile? Why have we (well, not us, but most whites) become such beta males in such a short period of time?

So a football player (guess what race) at Pace University tries to run over a cop with his car and gets shot dead. Of course, the media says it is racism and that the fine chap was "murdered." After all - how dare a cop - or any non-black - try to save his own life when a black wants to kill him.

So they talk to his high school principal about the guy and here is what he said:
