Welker is good, but he's no Isaac Bruce, that's for sure.

lol....i hope you are just having a laugh, and you are seriously not going to hold my opinion that Bruce is better than Bennett against me forever :)...it is not as if i believe Vick is a top 10 QB or something crazy

Yeah, I'm just having a laugh.

So, Vick isn't top 10.. but top 20, maybe?

Surrendering a second-round choice for a player of Welker's abilities would be viewed in most quarters, but especially in New England, as a steal. Welker would dramatically upgrade the New England wide receiver corps

Nice to see ESPN give the white man some credit.

Welker, 25, is a terrific, if unheralded playmaker who has earned a spot on the ESPN.com "all unsung" team each of the past two seasons.

Two time member of ESPN's "all white" team.

We'll see how this pans out. Welker definitely should be a starter for New England, with their mediocre corps. of blacks like Reche Caldwell, Jabbar Gaffney and Troy Brown. I would be shocked if he isn't immediately steered to the "white" position in the slot. I don't think New England treats white players any better than the other teams, unlike some posters here, so this will be a nice test in that regard.

I just posted about Bennett and the racial dynamics of a white player, especially a receiver. Welker picked a good team for a couple of reasons, they need receivers and they probably are not too anti-white in the team dynamics.

I usually don't think a white player should EVER move if he has found the rare NFL team that will start him. Unless the team changes coaches and/or he was on the bubble. In this case he could not expect the new Miami coach to keep him instead of trying to "upgrade" the position with an "athlete" so I think it's a good move on his part.

Isn't Welker one of the fastest guys in the league? Maybe I'm wrong about that, but he certainly looks fast to me. He has been variously described as a "possession" WR, perfect for the "slot," and "not a deep threat" in some fantasy web sites I've seen. If the Patriots give him a chance to start, it will indeed mean they are better than average in their treatment of white players.

Caldwell should be forced out of the state. I can almost guarantee you the Welker won't be in the slot. He will either be used as a deep threat or the Pats square out guy. Caldwell hopefully doesn't see the field ever again.
The slot is the beloved Troy Brown's spot for life. Brown was very good some time ago, but now probably has about 4.6-4.7 speed and has been around for 13-14 years. If he retires, the slot should be Welker's. Another possibility is that Brown will play mostly defense to free the slot for Welker.

Pats trade for Welker
New England gives up two draft choices for Miami WR

Spurning the risk that would have come with signing Miami receiver/returner Wes Welker to a restricted-free-agent offer sheet, the New England Patriots instead acquired Welker on Monday afternoon for two picks in the 2007 draft.

Signing Welker to the offer sheet would have meant Miami could have matched the offer and kept him or that it could have let New England acquire Welker in exchange for a second-round pick only. Instead, the Patriots will surrender their second- and seventh-round choices. It's also likely under this scenario that New England will have to lay out less cash to sign Welker long term.

Because Welker, 25, was a restricted free agent, Miami first had to sign him to a one-year contract, which it did on Monday. Later in the day, the trade to New England was consummated. It's thought the Patriots have a long-term contract worked out already with Welker, but it has not yet been announced. There were reports over the weekend that Welker would sign an offer sheet with New England averaging in the neighborhood of $6 million a year. With the deal being done this way, it's highly unlikely the Patriots will be making the 5-foot-9 Welker that rich.

Welker is only the second player in the last 15 NFL seasons to lead his team in receptions, punt returns and kickoff returns in the same season, which he did in 2006. (Former Titan Derrick Mason last accomplished that in 2001.) In New England it's likely he'll be given a good shot to start at receiver, and he'll probably return punts and get some other special teams opportunities as well.

The Patriots, unusually active in the first four days of free agency, now have traded for Welker and signed three free agents: linebacker Adalius Thomas, tight end Kyle Brady and running back Sammy Morris.

That is some interesting news. Just another reason to watch the Patriots next season.

welker had like 4.6 speed coming out of college i believe ( i checked his draft profile a while back) but if i remember correctly he had AWESOME agility drills and this can be seen in his quickness on the field. as such he is in some ways more of a possession guy than a deep threat but he is also a threat to take that 10 yard throw 50 yards because he can make people miss....he has WIGGLE!

edit. also as a pats fan i can't tell you how happy my father and i are about thisEdited by: nhl411

If there is one white guy that doesn't suffer from a lack of hip-swivility, its Wes Welker!

I might have to get direcTV and the package just for the Pats. The only better thing is kevin Curtis and Brian Leonard both go there too...

So can we expect big time receiving and TD stats from Welker now that maybe he has a chance to start in New England or will Tom Brady distribute the ball to everyone(what he notoriously does) therefore limiting the amount of stats Wes can get.

If Donte Stallworth signs with New England, Welker will almost certainly be relegated to the familiar white "slot" position. That might happen anyway, with a ton of mediocre black WRs in New England for Welker to unfairly compete with.

Having watched Welker throughout his college career, he is not a speed burner. He is very good at making people miss, and has quick moves to get to the open field, where he has enough speed to make a big play. He sure had enough skill to burn Texas A&M a few times.

From NFL.com http://www.nfl.com/news/story/10050436

"Adalius Thomas can play linebacker. He can play end. He can cover receivers down field. He can rush the passer. He can stuff the run. In short, he's Bill Belichick's dream player. Welker, by comparison, is a limited player, but what limitations those are! In addition to being a first-class kick and punt returner, he's developed himself into a superb possession receiver. Like Troy Brown, he'll do the dirty work and fill in the cracks."

I read in an article somewhere recently that Welker considers himself better suited for the slot. Doesn't bother me much. It would be nice to see him called a starter at the beginning of games but he'll be on the field plenty. Watching Miami games last year was like watching the Wes Welker Show at times. Welker will get chances to shine.

As long as he gets a significant amount of playing time I think its a good move. I'd rather see Welker catch the ball 45 times this year for a winning top notch team like the Patriots, than 60 times for a total caste football nightmare team like Miami. Also, hopefully the loss of Welker will make Miami a weaker team.
