Will she continue her great times outdoors? I hope so.

Sprints Preview - IAAF Golden League
Tuesday 12 June 2007

Women's 400m

Oslo will feature the first of what should be several 2007 face-offs between (Sanya)Richards and British rising star Nicola Sanders, who caught the continent's imagination after a sterling indoor campaign. Her 50.02 stunner in Birmingham to take the European title in March elevated her to the No. 5 spot all-time indoors, and clearly indicated that her outdoor best of 50.68 will soon be relegated to history.

Sanya Richards is a great runner and I have nothing against her, but I hope Nicola beats her decisively. With Jeremy Wariner the top mens 400 meter runner, if Nicola becomes the top womens 400 meter runner, there should be some serious damage done to the caste system. Maybe white runners will actually be credited with having talent and not just "heart".Edited by: highschoolcoach

Nicola has been having a bit of an achilles problem, so I am not sure she will be full strength in this race.
But I wish her the best.

Thanks for the information about Nicola. Fortunately, this is just one race. there will be others. I hope she ends up running 48.5 or better. An Olympic gold in 2008 would be awesome. I wonder how the press and commentators would handle that. Most likely explaining it as a result of ther trememdous "heart".

Also, this leads me to the same thing i always ask, "Why does Great Britain (Australia, Greece) produce world-class white women sprinters, but not the USA? It should be a lively topic of discussion. But, i do realize that womens track & field has only a limited following, so only a few forum members would venture a comment.

highschoolcoach,

i've posted about Nicola on another thread. she is amazing! from the interviews i've read of her, she is very down to earth. she doesn't even keep a special place at home for her trophies!

and to think she was a hurdler before a lingeringback injury that kept being aggravated made her look more seriously at running the 400 meters. wow! below is the link to a video of her dominating performance at the European Indoor Championships. her 400 meter time of 50.02 was a national record and the 5th fastest indoors EVER!

edited to add: here's a snippet from a recent article on Nicola. who do you think the author is referring to? *snickers*

Sanders makes no apologies for being a 'nice' Home Counties girl from Amersham who just loves to run. No studs or jewellery in unlikely places, no saucy tattoos, ridiculous hairdos or lycra running gear borrowed from an Ann Summers demonstration evening, and no pressing and unattractive desire to hog the camera and audition for a media career. What you see is what you get - low key, dedicated and very tough, despite her slender nine-stone frame.
"Nicola is a complete joy to work with," says her coach, Tony Lester, who numbers Mark Richardson and Roger Black among his previous charges. "She reminds me of them both. Very low maintenance, a ferocious trainer who, if anything, has to be held back. Extremely intelligent and savvy, but in no way a show-off."
