My Grade 12 French Presentation on racial pride

This is a funny story about my personal attempts to expose the double standard that exists.

For French class we had to do presentations on French-speaking people who have made a cultural or societal contribution to the world. What we had to do was present this person, and ask philosophical questions to the class which are meant to elicit a good class discussion. I knew exactly how to do that.

I chose to do mine on a black man, former president of Senegal Leopold Senghor.

His major cultural contribution to the world was creating the concept of "Negritude", the celebration of black culture and history, as well as the celebration of black people in general.

A little bit of background info. My French class is 75% girls, all of whom are extremely LIBERAL and consider themselves to be tolerant to all races and cultures. They also think they are a lot smarter than they are, as with most women.

And so I presented Leopold Senghor's life story, and presented Negritude in a neutral light, with a liberal swing that is expected of a teenager growing up in Canada. For instance I mentioned how it "celebrates" black culture, not how it can "divide" races. At the end of my presentation, I asked the class what they thought of "Negritude" and if it is good to recognize one's blackness, or if it encourages racial division.

The response was overwhelmingly "It is great to celebrate one's own identity and culture." The girls all nodded in unison, agreeing almost word for word. I also nodded in agreement.

My next question was "What would you think if other races created similar 'pride' organizations?"The response was the same. "All races should celebrate their culture."

I then asked, "So if tomorrow there were organizations that started appearing that advocated 'Aryan Pride' or 'White Power', what would you think?" The response was quite different.

Jaws dropped all around the class. People looked at each other with shocked facial expressions. Nobody knew what to say.

The girl who was sitting in the front row directly in front of me had her jaw visibly drop. I asked her what she thought and she answered "I would be absolutely shocked!" A few of the class agreed with her, but about half remained silent this time.

My next question was "Why are you advocating Black Pride but many of you are so outraged about White Pride?" This time, about 1/3 of the class agreed with me. They said "Yeah I know what you mean" either orally or with their body language. The next 1/3 remained silent, and there was another 1/3 who tried to defend their prejudiced views.

One girl said "White people are so racist and they have done so much harm to black people for so long, so its not really politically acceptable for them to show pride. Black people haven't really done anything like that." Much of the class said "yeah" or nodded.

I did not have to respond this time. My French teacher stepped in and added his two cents to the conversation. My French teacher is an ethnic white French who was born and raised in Algeria when it was a French province. He moved to France as a teenager, and then moved to Canada because he did not like the lack of racial tolerance in France towards minorities. In other words, he himself is also EXTREMELY liberal and it shows in many of the views he expresses.

His response surprised me."To say that black people haven't committed racial crime is 100% false. If you look at Africa, there continue to be constant ethnic wars among different Black ethnicities, like Rwanda and Darfur. They are also racist against whites, as is shown by Robert Mugabe seizing control of all white property in Zimbabwe and killing those who stood in his way. White people aren't the only racists, black people are equally guilty."

The class was surprised, but respected his opinion. I asked "So then why is it ok for black people to show pride but not white people?" Empty stares everywhere. All the girls looked at each other with confused expressions, none of them spoke.

True Story. I'm just doing my part.

Props to my French teacher for not being ignorant.

EDIT: I should also mention that at the end, many of my classmates congratulated me on a great presentation. This includes one or two people who were against white pride.

There seemed to be a consensus in the class that I raised an issue that none of them had ever thought of before, and that my point was valid, albeit surprising.Edited by: TorontoArgos

TorontoArgos,

Sir, take my advice, don't try to make fun of women. They are extremely sensitive about being thought of as stupid or trivial. If you think you succeeded, I assure you, you didn't. You gain nothing by going to war with women.

Toronto, way to go man! You got some sheepish minds to thinking, if nothing else. Tom Iron has a good point about women though. Many of them will say or do anything to you if you show them up.

Re: Tom Iron

What about the 10 guys in the class? Did that not accomplish anything?

And I disagree with you. Women can vote, women can write, women can communicate. Women are often the ones who pass on their own views to their children.

You can't get anywhere by ignoring 52% of the population. Imagine if presidential candidates had your attitude Tom Iron. They would never win.

TorontoArgos,

All I'm saying is don't let it seem you're demeaning them. If they get their backs up, you'll find yourself in a difficult position. You got lucky this time, but don't go to the well too often using logic on women. Trust me on this. I'm a long time married man.

I wasn't demeaning. I didn't even tell them they were wrong for having a double standard. They figured it out for themselves based on the questions I asked. I didn't even offer my own opinion.

TorontoArgos,

See, that shows how much you don't know. Just because you didn't demean them or tell them they were wrong doesn't mean they didn't take it that way. Like I say, you're on thin ice when you confuse them with logic.
Completely different ballgame with women.

Good night Toronto.

Good job, but try that in Massachusetts. Haha, my AP English class is so feminine and liberal that even suggesting that white or Aryan pride is the same as black pride would be sure suicide. Racism is the ultimate crime 'round here.

You misread his post.

Those weren't women. They were liberals.

But, none of those people who hate racism would move to a black area and would most likely be upset if their daughter came home with a black guy. They force others to live in mixed areas but keep themselves segregated in their towns.

For the most part you are correct. A lot of parents around here would be ok with their kids being homos. So maybe they'd like a whitewashed black. It's pretty backwards.

Yea thats true. There is a difference between traditional women and liberals who think they are the same as men.

Toronto Argos. The Tom Iron thing is a distraction from a good post and great class presentation. I applaud your courage and it sounds like it made a number of sheeple(including women) actually think about things in your class.

People tend to have very shallow beliefs on certain issues and any wind can blow them in a new direction. You provided the wind and you had substance to back it up. Good job.

TorontoArgos,

Geat Job. Tom Iron is way off on this one. You did not make these women look stupid, you opened up their minds. Even though it didn't come up in the discussion it just shows the effects social engineering has on some people who are not independent enough to think for themselves. In society (media-classroom-news) black pride = good, and white pride = evil/racist. White people these days are taught this lesson from early on in life, and to a large part it was refelected with what you had witnessed in the classroom.

Props to your teacher for stepping outside of his liberal shell and being able to not only see your point, but also show evidence to support it. What is happening these days to whites in South Africa would have been another good example.

Well done, Toronto,--a model of how to raise the issue ofracial pride and the double standard that exists today. And I disagree with Tom Iron,.... you did not "try tomake fun ofwomen" or "make war" against them. You simply presented an issue, asked a few questions, and let them think for themselves....again..well done.

Although I was vaguely aware of the double standard before, this site really educated me in that regard.

I think what Tom Iron was saying is that using logic or reason to make a point is often an affront to women, especially today's feminized females, and a good way to end up on their list. This can happen even if we don't intend for it to. To me, a teacher who has had to deal with a lot of young women, that makes sense. I'm glad it worked out well for Toronto. It seems his class has some open minds in it, which isn't always a given in the modern world. I also think Tom was trying to sound a word of caution for the future, and not trying to disparage what Toronto did.

To treat girls differently is to pander to them, in effect treat them like the "sensitized and oppressed minority" the media wants them to think of themselves as. Women respond to strong, confident men. Many desire leadership.
I think one of the biggest problems we have is that men are afraid to "stand up" to women in a healthy way and so submit to them, which only makes the situation worse and feeds into the present extremely sick ethos of men being whippedand womenacting likemen. It's much like the way so many parents are afraid to discipline their children ina healthy way for fear of offending not only thembut some nosy neighbor or someone else who might anonymously report them to a government agency as "abusers." The kids end up as little tyrants who "call the shots" just like so many womenend upwearingthe pants of the family because the man allowed or even encouragedit.

You are right Mr. Wassall.

Not only that, but women are more attracted to men who are not whipped, contrary to what some men think, and what women will try to have you believe.

Women enjoy having men they can boss around as their friends, but at the end of the day they would all sooner go to bed with a free-willed man who takes control.

In America any type of physical discipline on children is frowned upon. Someone will end up calling DYFS and all hell will break loose. In Europe this isn't the case at all as it is actually the norm.

I agree with Don as well. I have run into problems with spoiled girls in one of my classes. They aren't used to any responsibility or discipline from professors or parents. When I stood up to them and punished them fairly for their actions, they tried to get me in trouble by going to administrators and lying about me. It took a while to clear everything up, but the department stood behind me and told me I did everything correctly. Of course, the spoiled brats didn't really learn anything from it and lied about me in their class evaluations at the end of the semester. It won't stop me from being just as strict about responsibility and discipline in the future though.
