If all these negative reports are coming out we have to expect Jones not to even make the final roster. This writer needs to get his facts straight as well. Jones didn't take a year away from football. He was forced to because no team would sign him.

C'mon guys he's done. We've seen all this before. His career is over. They are just keeping him around as training camp fodder. He WILL get cut and no one else is going to take a shot on signing him.

Yes, he probably is done. Such is the life of a white wide receiver.

Rotoworld at its anti-White best:

Bengals WR Matt Jones caught three passes for 42 yards in Sunday night's Hall of Fame game preseason opener. Jones led the Bengals in receiving, though only because he played more than anyone and Jordan Palmer preferred throwing to Jones over Jerome Simpson (who signaled first down after catching a six-yard pass on third-and-15) and Maurice Purify. Jones just isn't a natural receiver. He's too long in the legs, lacks explosion in and out of his breaks, and still doesn't know how to get two feet down along the sideline. He's not going to make the team.

I thought Jones looked incredibly smooth. He got open and caught the ball with the greatest ease. He caught two passes that were headed out of bounds and nearly got his feet down for the completions - that doesn't show up in the stats. He also made a small move and nice run after a catch. He clearly is faster than anybody else on the field but to me what is impressive is how much larger he is than the guys trying to cover him. He would be a dominant reciever and star if he actually got a chance. Rotoworld sucks.

Too long in the legs? WTF??? Where do they come up with this sh*t. They must be running out of euphemisms for our guys lol.

Jones looked outstanding. He effortlessly got open repeatedly, caught the ball precisely, and got yards after the catch. The two balls he caught along the sideline were difficult because he was running full stride across the field and the benches and gatorade were literally 5 yards from the sideline. Jones didn't get in the game until late in the 3rd quarter so I don't know why the rotoworld idiot is saying he got the most playing time. He is a man among boys with these 5'11" corners. Why do people hate Matt Jones? What about former Eagles great 6'8" Harold Carmichael, were his legs too long? It's very frustrating.

Those f@g$ at rotoworld don't know what they're talking about.

If the bengals want to be contenders, then they better know who to start and get the ball to....

Chris Collinsworth actually somewhat praised Jones, even referencing his outstanding 4.3 40-yard dash time during the combine. It was the only intelligent thing uttered by those professional twits (Al Michaels is just a Castean as Collinsworth-less) all night long. What a dull game to open the NFL season.

Perhaps Jones can continue to impress during the pre-season"¦but that never seems to help white WRs from evading the Annual Racial Purge.

He didn't play more than anyone, I didn't see him in the game until real late. As far as Jordan preferring to throw to him, isn't that a good thing? Isn't the quarterback going to throw to the guy that gets open? and is going to catch the ball and make him look the best?

Jones gets a bit of respect in this article, and also does a good job speaking about his abilities. Unfortunately the article also says that Leonard could be out anywhere from a few weeks to the entire season depending on further evaluation of his foot injury.

Leonard's foot injury cause for concern

Loss of backup running back would be severe blow

Until Sunday night, the Bengals had avoided major injuries in training camp. That run of luck has ended.

Brian Leonard suffered a significant foot injury in Sunday's 16-7 loss to Dallas in the Hall of Fame Game. He will visit a specialist Tuesday after undergoing tests on Monday in Cincinnati. The injury was initially diagnosed as a mid-foot sprain, but there was limited equipment at Canton's Fawcett Stadium.

The diagnosis ranges anywhere from Leonard missing the rest of the preseason to being out for the season.

The loss of Leonard would be severe to the offense. He was clutch in third- and fourth-down situations last year while occasionally serving as a blocking back. Besides running back, Leonard was listed as the second-string fullback on last week's depth chart.

Said Carson Palmer of Leonard's second-quarter injury after the game: "I'm very concerned. He's a big-time player for us and we have a lot of things built in specifically for him. So the quicker he gets back the better."

Factor in Leonard's injury and the Bengals become even thinner at running back and fullback. Cedric Peerman (hamstring) and Fui Vakapuna (shoulder) missed the Dallas game. Cordera Eason was injured in the fourth quarter.

That leaves Cedric Benson and Bernard Scott as the only healthy running backs and Joe Tronzo as the only healthy fullback.

It is expected that will have to make a roster move to bring another healthy body into camp.

GOOD START: For someone who had not seen game action in 20 months, it was an encouraging debut for Matt Jones. Jones was the Bengals leading receiver with three catches for 42 yards. He would have had another for 18 yards if Dallas won a replay challenge that he went out of bounds.

For the fifth-year receiver, it was a good start but something he was expecting.

"I mean out there playing with the three's I hope I could do something real good," Jones said. "Jordan (Palmer) made some good throws and it was pitch and catch."

On the Bengals 11th drive of the game, it was Jones who finally got the offense into Dallas territory with the Bengals' longest offensive play of the game - a 28-yard reception near the left sideline where he caught it between three Dallas defenders and broke away. All but five of those yards came after the catch.

"I'm a basketball player I can make a couple moves," Jones said.

Said receivers coach Mike Sheppard of Jones: "He worked hard to get yards after catch and did a good job. He's earned a little more opportunity and now that he's seemingly back to good health he can get there."

In the early battle for the sixth and final receiving position, Jones emerged as the early leader. Jerome Simpson and Quan Cosby had two catches apiece and Dez Briscoe had one reception. Simpson got separation on a deep route early in the second quarter but the pass was overthrown.

"Matt ran some real good routes," Palmer said. He's really easy to throw to because you can throw it anywhere."

Jones status early in the week was doubtful when he missed practices due to a bruise to the fifth metatarsal. But after being put in a boot for a couple days by the trainers, Jones was ready to go late in the week.

With practices resuming today in Georgetown, Jones knows that there is still a long road ahead with four preseason games remaining, including Sunday night at Paul Brown Stadium against Denver.

"I can play this game. I've been a number one receiver on a team and led the team two different times in yards and catches," Jones said. "I know what to do. It's just about getting into summer workouts and getting rust off and keeping it going."

OVERALL ASSESSMENT: Sheppard thought that the receivers made progress late last week but that there is still room for improvement.

"We're just a week into this thing and there are a lot of new parts," he said. "There's always that adjustment period and that's what the preseason is for."

That was also the view of the dynamic duo of Owens and Chad Ochocinco.

Said Owens, who had two receptions for 18 yards: "For me, it was a good experience and I know that I have a lot of room to improve."

Ochocinco was thrown to only once but didn't seem to mind that Palmer and Owens were trying to get into rhythm.

"I'd rather they get as many catches as they can," he said. "I'm really excited for this team but by no means was tonight an indicator. We have a lot of work to go, we'll be fine."

I guess this thread's gotten to the point where any article that doesn't say Jones looks slow is a great article. "Jones emerged as the early leader" for the coveted 6th wide receiver spot. It's hard to get too excited. Unless he can climb up to the 4th spot behind ocho, t.o. and shipley, then this will be a wasted season. And honestly, he's better than Shipley; more experienced and talented.Edited by: icsept

Matt Jones needs to get on another team...too many teams out there he could have a big impact on... I could easily see him amongst the Top 10 in AFC in receptions if used properly! I'm tired of having to depend on others to get "injured" just to get a chance! For some reason he's not getting that chance ! I'll try to be patient this year...and just maybe he can land on another team next year that actually needs him! He will only be 28...

Hope a speedy recovery for Brian Leonard! Did not think he'd be back rest of pre-season after seeing that.Edited by: TwentyTwo

Matt Jones deserves better. He is so talented and like so many previous white wide receivers, he will probably be around 30 before he gets a legitimate chance if then. The guy could have started along side of OCHO STINKO, but no they couldn't let that happen. I feel bad for him. So much talent and yet he gets overlooked by everyone.

Matt Jones' awkward and slow motion gait is a negative, right? I'm confused. Check out this blurp.

Jamar Wall looked better in the first half, facing the better Bengals receivers. Jordan Palmer picked on the 4th round pick in the second half, completing three passes to Matt Jones, whose odd stride had Wall off-balance.

It's all so ridiculous. "Odd stride" -- I wonder if that one will catch on or not -- "Undrafted receiver John Whiteface is an overachieving, non-stop motor guy who gives great effort every play despite not being athletic, lacking speed, having tight hips and running with an odd stride."Edited by: Don Wassall

Yet they called Jones the best athlete for his size EVER! I guess that doesn't apply anymore. Vernon Davis was poor in the beginning despite having great combine numbers. No one ever doubted him. Why the double standard?

Jones could easily put up Ed McCaffrey type numbers if he's ever allowed to start and is IMHO the best WR on the Bengals roster right now...

Odd stride can be a b*tch. just ask many very dark and athletic gentlemen playing cornerbacks and trying to cover such odd striders as Jones, Decker or Nelson.

Kevin Roberts of Bleacher Report is one of the very few writers who doesn't have it in for Matt Jones:

3. Matt Jones Makes the Team

What is with all this negative talk about Matt Jones? He might not be the most explosive guy anymore, but there's no knocking his hands and route-running these days. He can still make plays, too.

Antonio Bryant not being at full health could go a long way to helping Jones stick on the final roster, but we're actually banking on Jones continuing to work hard and prove his doubters wrong. After all, if you can't turn your career around in Cincinnati, where can you?

By the way, Rotoworld is insane -- Matt didn't see the field until the last 7 minutes, or so, so how did he play more than anyone else?....Also, his reversed side-line catch was a nice display of footwork. I doubt even Jerry Rice could've stayed in bounds and caught such an errant throw.

No doubt Matt Jones was easily the best Bengal WR out there from the line of scrimmage by far. He carved up the DB's rather effortlessly while the twidiots did nada.
