Leftwich is much more of a pocket passer than most black QBs. Jax is one of the blackest teams in the league, but how can they not use him as a receiver? At least he went fairly highin the first round too. Jimmy Smith is getting old and they don't have anything after him. Could work out very well for Matt.

How about him going earlier than everyone projected him?
What a nice surprise. They must really believe in him to take a
risk on him- even though nobody seems to know what position
he'll play! Maybe they have a clearer idea about that than
everyone else. Someone briefly mentioned that the Jags' TE,
Brady, is more of a blocker than receiver, and another TE
(missed his name) hasn't panned out, so that may hint at what
Jack Del Rio wants to do with him. As long as he succeeds and
proves all the critics wrong, I'll be happy. QB or WR would be
sweet though. At any rate, they would have to be really
incompetent to be careless with such a big investment, so let's
hope that they do everything they can to further his
development.

Man, Mike Vrabel totally dismissed him! He also defended
Randy Moss. What a jerk. He must be preparing for a career
in the media after he retires. Torry Holt was politely skeptical, I
thought, and Mortensen and Salisbury were extremely positive. Edited by: JD074

The schizophrenia of the system toward great white athletes was on display, literally, as Jones was picked. One graphic said "Matt Jones, WR," while below it anotherread "Matt Jones, TE"! I do believe Tagliabue called him a wide receiver. I wasn't paying close attention till I heard the name Matt Jones because I never expected Jacksonville to take him.

I like Sean Salisbury for the first time after hestrongly supported Jones as a receiver, saying he'll never play a down in the NFL as a tight end.

I like the fact that Matt Jones was picked earlier than expected, but I
fear that he went to one of many wrong places he could have gone to. As
Don pointed out, Jacksonville is about the blackest team in the league.
They also still have Jimmy Smith and last year's #1 pick, Reggie
Williams, so expect to hear a lot about bringing Jones along "slowly,"
and "taking time to adapt" to the WR position, which translates into
lack of playing time. That, of course, is if he is allowed to play WR,
which is not a sure thing at all. In my paranoid moments, I suspect
that the Caste System may take care of white athletes like Jones by
making sure they go to teams that will never use them correctly. I just
can't imagine a white hater like Del Rio starting a white WR.

I also was outraged at Vrabel's critical comments about Jones. They
were echoed by Torry Holt. The funny thing is, these two jocks loved
every other pick that was made in the first round, even Detroit's
ridiculous selection of slow, plodding Mike Williams. Wonder why they
decided to drop their cheerleading for the league for this particular
pick?

I was ticked off by Vrabel too. He is that rare "white slash" himself, at least as used by New England. With Pittsburgh he was totally screwed so you'd think he'd be more supportive of Jones. Maybe his success has gone to his head a bit.

Reggie Williams was widely judged to be a flop last year. He is very slow, so hopefully he shouldn't hold Jones back. Another thing to consider is that Jones probably lost any chance he had to play QB as well as WR, because with a black as the incumbent QB that'll never happen.

The insidious minds ruling the NFL love toyingwith my psyche. Those low down rats know any satisfaction derived from a Matt Jones touchdown will be bitter sweet at best, knowing full well Byron will receive the lions share of glory for tossing the ball.Is there no justice in this world? But wait, it's too early, why despair? The Jags ebony quarterback's may fail miserably, they'll beg Jones to line up under center. Ahhhh, there is light at the end of the tunnel. Kiss my grits, Tagliabue.

i hear ya...i would much rather jones go to the ravens so that he can make kyle boler look good...rather then this overrated sloth in jacksonville...but at least its a good thing that jones went so early...even the self hating black loving coach that jack del-rio is couldnt deny the unheard of athletic ability that jones so obviously has.

I agree with Don, any chance of Matt Jones playing QB is gone now,
barring some unforeseen injuries to both Leftwich and Gerard
(sp?). Esp. since Leftwich isn't that bad a QB either.

Jack Del Rio was just interviewed by ESPN. He said that Jones would be used "primarily" as a wide receiver. Right after the interview, Mike Golic (aka "Dumbo the Elephant") said something about Jones eventually being turned into the "prototypical tight end" but I was glad to hear Del Rio state the obvious. Jones being used the right way and becoming a star will help Leftwich become a star. I don't mind that tradeoff.

I was very pleased that Matt Jones was selected in the first round but i was not happy that he was picked up by the Jags.Matt jones will be used as a wide out but i think he will get a shot one day playing as a quarterback in the NFL.I just have this feeling.Mel kiper said that he is the best athlete to come into the NFL in 6-7 years.Matt JOnes is just a gifted genetic freak of nature. He is big, strong and quick. For pete's sake the guyis 6'6 1/2 around 260 lbs and he runs like the speed of light.that is unheard of.I would def try to get traded if I were Matt jones to a team that needs a quarterback. He will get his opportunity one day maybe it even might be in jacksonville.Stranger things have happend so you never know.I wish Matt Jones the best.

Can't wait for the jersey to come out.

Jax might be my new favorite team, depending on what they do with Jones.

The link was great, Don, cept for the idiot's scouting report on the side bar, second page.

Now that the "experts" have begrudgingly "allowed" Jones to be a receiver -- and of course there areand will remainholdouts calling for him to be a tight end -- he will be on a very short leash despite his inexperience at the position. He will have to produce fairlyquickly as a rookie or the cries of "bust" and "why did anyone think he'd be anything but a tight end" will begin in frenzied, harmonicearnest.

I can't do it, Don, my enthusiasm is too high right now. I know I'm
bound for a crash, the way things are in the NFL these days but I just
LOVE the idea of Jones turning into a bad-ass WR, making all the
highlight reels.

I'm hoping he turns out so well that future white WRs with potential will be referred to as "Matt Jones like..."

I agree White Shogun.I want to see alot of whites
referred to as like Jones,Bennett or Stokley.Any of
these would be a compliment. They still compare some guys
to receivers like Largent and even before his time.
I want Matt Jones to light the nfl on fire.Every week
on sportscenter they will be saying,Da,da,da, da,da,da!

I'm not trying to dampen anyone's enthusiasm 'cause I'm excited too! I think Matt Jones has the ambition to go along with his athleticism to become very successful in spite of all the naysayers and others who will cheer his every mistake, and hopefully becomethe first white superstar at receiver in many years. I think both Jones and Drew Bennett have superstar potential. Bennett's already shown it, it's just a question of whether Tennessee will now use him like one and whether Jacksonville will develop Matt just as they would any raw black receiver with superstar potential.

I also think that if one or both does become a superstar, they will become very popular nationwide, further proof that a lot of whites do indeed want white athletic heroes at positions they have been artificially shut out of for so long, to look up to and emulate.

Hey Don, I didn't mean to imply that you were, sorry for the confusion.

As to the popularity of white athletes, can you say (or spell, haha!) Ben Roethelesberger??

White Shogun, don't apologize. We're allhuge Matt Jones fans here.

I live in Steeler Country, and can testify how popular Big Ben is. I'm sure Jones will be the toast of Jacksonville should he become a star, and will have a following all over the country. In fact, it was the fans everywhere who were really talking about Jones before the media was, hoping their hometown team would draft him. I think the fans were what forced the media to reluctantly acknowledge Jones' amazing athleticism and give him more publicity as the draft got nearer.

On the message board of jaguars.com there's a thread containing Matt Jones video links -- includes some combine and Sr. Bowl footage.

First I've heard of the "Million Dollar Catch".

Good grief, what do we have on our hands here?

I watched that highlight reel on the Jags site, and it is sick that Matt isn't playing quarterback, especially option quarterback. He could be a great tailback, too. But he's gonna be "sick" at wide receiver. Just awesome ability.

I saw the highlight reel too and I must say that I was
amazed. That one hand catch he made in the end zone was
incredible. He has it all but it will take some time to
see how effectivley the Jags use him.Byron will need to
make him one of the top 2 receivers.Realize though guys
that there will be alot of jealousy.Expect alot of
players to take cheap shots on Jones. He is big so I
think he can handle it but I am more worried about them
taking out his knees. He is a superstar in the waiting
if they just get him the ball.Well,I guess I have a
reason to watch the Jags this year.Go Jones.

Jones has a tough road ahead of him. First, he is going to have to fit
in with Jacksonville's nearly all-black roster. You know they will be
expecting him to be a typical "white boy," and every single mistake he
makes will be scrutinized and commented on, almost certainly in
colorful and racially charged language. Second, no matter how good he
looks, he has to overcome Jack Del Rio's natural bias against him.
Third, if he somehow manages to start and produce big numbers, he must
deal with the inevitable jealousy of his black teammates, who will
resent his being a "star" and taking attention away from them, even if
it helps them win more games. Let's just hope that Del Rio doesn't
listen to the "experts" when trying to figure what to do with Jones. I
can't remember which jock-sniffing idiot it was, but someone on ESPN
analyzed him prior to the draft, and said, unbeliebably enough, that
Jones reminded him of Joe Jurevicious! He also said that he was
"probably best suited to play the slot." Yeah, that's about as clear a
code word as possible for "the proper place for a white WR."

Hey, I love Joe Jurevicius as much as the next guy, especially on this
board, but the only thing they have in common is their skin
color. They should be comparing Jones, talent wise at least, to
Randy Moss or Mike Vick, IMO.

JJ is a great receiver, and way better than many of his black
counterparts and is not given nearly the credit he deserves.. but I
believe MJ is a much better athlete and will have dramatic, game
altering impact IF he gets to play and IF he is used as he should
be.

Damn, am I gushing here or what? Sorry 'bout that, boys.
smiley9.gif

edit: for clarificiation, when I say "they should be comparing.." I
mean the media pundits and sports writers, who think those two guys
(Moss and Vick) are God's gift to football.
