Russian prospect Konstantin Ponomarev, (29-0, 13 KOs), remained unbeaten with a hard-earned majority decision over Ramses Agaton, (17-3-3, 9 KOs), in an eight-round welterweight bout. One judge scored the bout a draw, while the other two judges scored the bout 79-73 for the 23-year old Russian, who trains with GGG in Big Bear, California.
Ponomarev was coming into this fight off of the biggest win of his career, picking up the NABF welterweight title by routing then-undefeated Mikael Zewski last May. However over the first half of this fight Ponomarev had all he could handle with the tough Mexican southpaw Agaton. Ponomarev had trouble landing accurately and was consistently countered by hard left and right hands from Agaton.
However as the fight progressed, Ponomarev started to wear down Agaton with his constant pressure, and as Agaton started to tire he became an easier target for Ponomarev, who finished the last three rounds strongly by landing at will on the fading Agaton while avoiding the counterpunches that dogged him in the early rounds.
