Just when it looked like Duddy took a huge step forward by beating Howard Eastman, he disappointed again with a bloody majority decision victory over Walid Smichet. I didn't see the fight, but clearly Smichet busted him up badly. Check out the photo of the cut over Duddy's eye. It's one hell of a gash:

Smichet lost a lop-sided decision to Sebastian Demers, who in turn was blown out by Arthur Abraham in three rounds. Smichet also scored a draw against Donny McCrary. Getting busted up by this level of opposition does not bode well for Duddy. He also struggled against Yory Boy Campas, who was handled pretty easily by Eromesele Albert in his next fight, and recently KO'd by Amin Asikainen.

I've always been wary of Duddy. He'll give action but sometimes has defensive lapses that would hurt him against top competetion. Against Pavlik that would be a death sentence. I like more of what I have seen of Andy Lee.

Duddy must seriously address his lack of defense. It will be his down fall if he doesn't vastly improve it. He would get creamed by Pavlik if they fought. I suspect he knows this. He has to hire some trainer to quickly teach him some defensive skills. Steward or even Atlas could teach him something.

It was ridiculous. Walid would look straight down, close his eyes, lunge off balance, and throw a wild hook and BAM! would land flush on the chin of Duddy. I thought Duddy won the fight by boxing in the second half of the fight. But Jesus, did he get hit right square in the face. I think it was in the third round I was actually counting how many consecutive power punches were landed on him. It was like 13 or 14 hooks and straights were landing right on the button by a guy who was closing his eyes every time he would swing. This is the first time I have ever seen Duddy fight live and I must say I was sorely disappointed by his performance. On the other hand I think Andy Lee may very well be something special. Lightning quick, power in both hands, and one hell of a defense. If Duddy fights Pavlik I believe it will end in the first.

Duddy has a big heart and suspect defense.....a bad combination against a devastating puncher like Pavlik.

I like both these guys a lot and hope they do not face each other, but since Duddy has a huge following with my fellow Irishmen in NY, he is considered to be a good draw, and money is what ultimately decides matchups.....

I agree that Andy Lee seems to have more upside.Edited by: pt.guard2

I just got a copy of the fight from Sky TV. Duddy narrowly beat the Canadian based Tunisian. I scored it 6-4 in rounds for Duddy. It seemed like he wanted to blow out his opponent instead of looking for angles. If he tries that strategy with Pavlik it could be a more one sided version of Hagler vs Hearns when he and Pavlik meet. It will be intersting to see who Pavlik fights next as the cuts on Duddy's face ran to the bone and will take a good half to heal properly.

That's what Don Turner was supposed to be for, but apparently it's not working out.

I couldn't believe John Duddy's shoddy defensive skills and I think the way he underestimated Smichets power was a bit stupid aswell. However, most people would've been KO'd after some of those power shots from Smichet, so Duddy's proved he has one hell of a chin and great stamina. He also never stopped punching Smichet which shows his great fitness. I reckon he out punched Smichet 4-1 which is why he won on points despite Smichet landing the bigger blows. Credits due for Duddy for giving us some entertainment!

I think we all know Pavlik would kill Duddy if they ever met

Duddy needs a change of trainers. Duddy was inches taller and had much more reach in this fight but fought stupidly and made few adjustments throughout the fight.

A glaring mistake was that he kept getting hit with his opponents' overhand right. When you have the reach and height advantages that Duddy had, a fighter simply has to use his jab to stop that punch and it will land on the shoulder instead of connecting to the head. Duddy stood squarely in front of him and either took the punch or it collided with his own left hook. Wrong way to box.

Another stupid tactic Duddy used was to try and short-hook his shorter opponent all night. When a fighter is taller and has longer reach, it is usually not a good idea to shorten his punches and bring himself within range of his shorter opponent. Duddy needed to straight shoot down the middle and make his opponent take chances and lunge at him. With his opponent in a poorer position, he could then find a clever counter to knock him out with.

If I were training Duddy I wouldn't let him attack at all during sparring for at least three months. I would let him jab only and he would have to block and slip and bob and weave until he learned that defense is also fun and part of his tactical repretoire. Good defense will improve his offense as he will find opportunities for counter shots that he had not seen before. In boxing, men that only know how to attack usually burn out.

Howe isn't much and Duddy will win. But I am hoping that he has improved his defense. I see maybe one more creampuff for him and after that he will have to face a decent world class fighter again. He does have the talent, just needs to work on the defense. Edited by: mrjohnnynofear

"He does have the talent, just needs to work on the defense."

That decribes all the Irish prospects: Andy Lee, Jamie Moore, Bernard Dunne and Duddy.

Agreed. I didn't really think of it but it is true. All 4 have the tools. Just hoping they can block a few of those punches before throwing their own.

John Duddy improved his record to 25-0 tonight, winning every round on all three scorecards against Charles Howe (100-90, 100-90, 100-90).

Hey JD1986, Did you see the fight? If so, how did Duddy look? It sounds like he had a cakewalk but I am hoping he didn't get tagged.Edited by: mrjohnnynofear

From what I hear mrjohnnynofear, is that Duddy showed a pretty good improved defense, with more head movement. Duddy himself said something along of the lines of I can't be brave all the time. I suppose he thought it was cowardly to try and not get hit!

I'm a Duddy fan. He has his flaws, but seems to improve each time out.

Thanks for the update Sean. I'm hoping that he (along with Andy Lee) can get better with his defense and become the future challengers for the middleweight crown once Pavlik and Abraham move up in weight.

I watched the Phillips - Spinks fight here in St. Louis at the Scottrade Center and I have to tell you Duddy can win this one. Verno really shouldn't have won that fight (I'm not going to get into another Don King tirade, I should have known it was a DON KING PRODUCTIONS beforehand) as Cory won it easily. But Verno is a aveage fighter who was getting tagged by the crafty but boring and light fisted Spinks. If Duddy can do the same thing, he will blow him out. Just beware, I know Spinks is with Don King but I am not sure with Phillips. If he is, John had better not leave it in the judges hands
