I just watched the fight and it was very difficult to score. The British commentary team (made up of very knowledgeable ex world champions such as Barry McGuigan) had it scored to Joe by between 2 and 3 rounds but were nervous because he won few if any rounds by a clear margin and he never really shook Hopkins with any big shots.
Hopkins tactic was to come charging in head first and swing a right hand, then shove his head into Joe's throat and grab his arms. The referee would separate them then the process would repeat. I was disappointed (and relieved) that Hopkins had little boxing ability, but it was still a great fight to watch. Joe won it on sheer fighting spirit and determination. The referee was a joke. It it had actually been a Boxing contest instead this new bizarre form of martial art invented together by the Ref and Hopkins, Joe would have won the contest much more clearly.

And nice point Bear Backer - I noticed Kellerman was embarrassed for Hopkins and was quite uncomfortable. The tribute to him at the end lacked any sincerity and he seemed to be going through the motions reading his script.

whiteathlete33: What do you mean that Joe won every single round? Punch stats, yes, but you can`t make a statement like that when the 1st round was scored 10-8 because of the knockdown. Yes, Joe clearly deserved a unanimous decision, but let`s be realistic in our assessments, too.

Oh I forgot to post that the Welsh also clearly won round zero.
Tom Jones won by a clear knockout over whoever that was that butchered the U.S. national anthem. That was a 10 - 8 round on my card.

I couldn't believe the tactics Hopkins employed and Cortez the gimp let him get away with. Hopkins looked like a UFC fighter most of the fight. His leading with head and his obviously fake swoon jobs were too much for me. I'm glad the judges weren't myopic like they are for many Vegas fights.

I didnt watch the fight unfortunately however according to the punch stats Joe landed twice as many shots.

It was like he couldn't believe that he had to talk about another white fighter which he loathes so much.

Kellerman was left in a bad position. The winner of the fight would either be a dissed White man fighting for racial pride, or a Black Muslim.

Don't compare that sh*tty ass performance by Hopkins to a UFC fighter.

Hopkins put Calzaghe on the canvas in the first round, so it wouldn't matter how many more punches Joe landed in that round. At most, Calzaghe might have made it a 9-9 round.

It's also possible for one fighter to out punch his opponent and rack up the hits on Compubox, but still lose a fight. Picture a fighter who goes all out in the first 3-4 rounds, but draws the next two and then barely loses the remaining six. Compubox stats may have him ahead but the fight is scored on a round by round basis, not total punches accumulated. Throw in a knock down or two for the less active fighter, and you could lose a fight by a wide margin and still score more punches on Compubox.

Joe Calzaghe confirms his greatness after climbing off the floor to raise the roof

Ron Lewis Las Vegas

What makes Joe Calzaghe great is that he can win when things go wrong, triumph when matters conspire against him. Bernard Hopkins tried every trick in the book, from fouling to feigning injury, but still lost. Calzaghe outhustled the old street hustler.

It was not Calzaghe's best win, but it was his highest-profile one. It was also achieved in the toughest circumstances as he had to pick himself off the floor in the first minute. That would have led to panic for many a boxer, but not Calzaghe. The Welshman turned things around to win by a split points decision in his first bout at light-heavyweight, in his first bout in the United States and with three American judges. "I didn't box as well as I could, it was a bit of a messy fight," Calzaghe said. "Hopkins was very dirty on the inside. But I fought at a new weight for the first time, got put down and still managed to win, I'm very proud. I set myself a goal to come to America to fight and not just to fight here, but to win."

He won the world light-heavy-weight title as recognised by The Ring magazine and the claim to be the linear champion. The attendance of 14,213 at the Thomas & Mack Centre was more than 1,000 up on the crowd Ricky Hatton pulled in for his win over José Luis Castillo at the same venue in June last year.

Calzaghe is unbeaten in 45 bouts as a professional - four short of the record of Rocky Marciano - has been a world champion at super-middleweight for 10½ years and counting (he holds the WBC, WBA, WBO and The Ring titles) and now has a claim to being the world's No 1 light-heavyweight.

"I'm not going to call myself a legend and say how great I am," Calzaghe said in a barbed reference to Hopkins. "I feel that I'm very proud of what I've achieved. When I turned pro with my dad as my trainer, people laughed. But now we've shown them."

Calzaghe was a strong favourite but had the worst possible start. A minute in, he was caught square on by a short right hand from Hopkins and found himself on the canvas for only the third time in his career. "I fell straight into the trap," Calzaghe said. "He caught me flush. When I got back to the corner, Dad was ranting and raving. I told him I slipped - I don't think he bought it."

At 43, Hopkins, could not take proper advantage, but continued to get through with the right until Calzaghe adjusted his tactics to negate its effect.

Hopkins backed up constantly, trying to counter-punch. The American held up close and was allowed to get away with plenty of holding by Joe Cortez, the referee, who had infuriated Hatton with the handling of his bout against Floyd Mayweather Jr in December. Hopkins often led with his head, punched in clinches and hit low on the referee's blind side.

But Calzaghe was gaining control with his workrate and handspeed and in the tenth round, with Hopkins tired, the American showed his talent for gamesmanship, turning away and claiming a phantom low blow. Cortez allowed the American a break of about four minutes and another minute in the eleventh when he claimed another invisible foul.

"After six or seven rounds, I felt him struggling," Calzaghe said. "He couldn't handle the pace so he took a rest and the referee allowed it." But Calzaghe finished the stronger, to make sure of the decision.

Afterwards Hopkins claimed victory and failed to acknowledge Calzaghe, refusing even to touch gloves with the Welshman at the start of the last round.

Hopkins's famed brag that he would "never lose to a white man" was proved wrong and Calzaghe, who - admirably - had never risen to the racial tone, could not resist a dig in the ring. "I said, 'What's it like to get your a*** kicked by a white guy?' " Calzaghe said. "He didn't say much."

Congrats to the Welsh-Italian Dragon! for what it's worth: the consensus at Eastside boxing seems to agree: that Calzaghe really won all three rounds and had a comfortable 117-111 victory.

Joe likes to do a little show -boating from time to time, and considering what Hopkins said,he probably couldn't resist. Still, I would rather have seen him do something else. That wasway too weird, especially in front of the whole world.

The judge that had it for Hopkins is black (Adelaide Byrd). Surpised?

HBO had it 116-111 Calzaghe. Hopkins kept bending down saying he was hit low. Really, he was just gassed and looking for a break from Joe's beating.

Bernard Hopkins was schooled by a "white boy."

I'm not surprised the black lady judge scored it for Hopkins. Black people notoriously support their own much more so than us whites support our own anymore.

The problem here is that it was probably complete deceit in her scoring, rather than just seeing the fight wrong b/c of her passion for Hopkins causing selective observation. I think she truely knew Calzaghe was the clear winner of this fight.

And of course Yahoo, would be the first to take away credit from possibly the greatest P4P fighter of all time who is white and give credit to a black felon and racist. This is the company that owns

afterall.

And I agree completely w/ White Shogun, I couldn't imagine what Yahoo "Caucasian Rivals" sports would say if Joe said the equivalent of what Hopkins said. Can you imagine their reaction: "It's always a race issue when it's white vs. black. Everyone is waiting for the next Great (Black) Hope. . . It's a cultural fight for me. I will never lose to a black boy!"

Edited to Add: BTW, I didn't see the fight, so could some one tell me what happened when Clazaghe got knocked down. Sounds like he got his guard down for a sec and got hit with a haymaker. Edited by: ToughJ.Riggins

sorry, I meant to say re: Eastside: "the consensus was that the decision should have been unanimous for calzaghe"----clumsy of me.

I agree that the lady voted for hopkins out of black solidarity. black women are especially notorious for this--look at their support of OJ.

i thought that clip was funny.Calzaghe fights on alot of raw emotion and has a tendency in his fights to go into that funky emotional kind of state that most people have in them. The equivalent would be someone who goes abit crazy on the dance floor. He's done it throughout his career.Against Eubank he burst into a really intense Ali shuffle while throwing a flurry of punches which had the crowd in stitches. He clowned Lacy too holding one arm in the air while jabbing with the other
smiley36.gif
Joe's one of the most entertaining fighters in the world and he only adds to that value for me by clowning Black dudes every now and then.

Some other comments from the post-fight press conference:

"Calzaghe steamed while Hopkins (48-5-1) filibustered at the post-fight news conference, dipping his head to his chest in a fake snooze. After Hopkins repeatedly proclaimed himself the winner, trainer/father Enzo Calzaghe raised his thumbs and index fingers in the well-known symbol for loser.ÂÂ￾E
A white boy beat you, mate,ÂÂ￾EJoe Calzaghe called after him, echoing HopkinsÂÂ￾Einfamous taunt-I would never let a white boy beat me-back in December.

Of course you wouldn`t expect him to be a gracious loser,ÂÂ￾ECalzaghe said. He is still not over his losses to Jermain Taylor. He still thinks he is a legend. ÂÂ￾ERoy Jones, he is also a legend, isn`t he? But I am a legend killer. Send in another one, and I will send them all packing."

No fighter has landed more punches against Hopkins than Calzaghe, including in Hopkins losses to Roy Jones and Jermain Taylor. Other than the first round, Calzaghe dominated what was by his own admission an ugly fight due to Hopkins excessive hitting and holding.

Kellerman made an interesting point about how this fight went against racial stereotypes...with Calzaghe being the athletic improvisional fighter and Hopkins being the "thinking man's" fighter.

Simply put, Joe C. makes whatever adjustments he needs to to win the fight.

Both Yahoo and Espn piss me off. Right now on Espn.com they show a picture of Hopkins landing a flush shot on Joe even though he didn't win the f**king fight

Even after Pavlik beat Taylor in the rematch guess what picture they have plastered on their website? Taylor connecting with a power shot
smiley7.gif
It seems they intentionally refuse to give credit to the white fighter. I had the fight 9 to 3 which would be 116-111. On the knockdown Joe got caught when he squared up which he has done in the past. Plus it didn't help when Hopkins plowed into him after the punch.

Similar things seem to happen each and every day...can you imagine how they would react if a white fighter would actually lose to a black fighter?? This occurred in the UFC a couple months ago when Chuck Liddell lost to Rampage Jackson. I suppose it was a coincidence that video of Liddell getting KOed was featured on every one of those half-hour, garbage ESPN shows (around the horn, PTI, cold pizza, sportscenter).

This nation's media outlets should be ashamed of nearly every newscast they spew from hell. Seriously, 10-year old kids have the brain to recognize how biased the news can be.

joe got hit with one puch that made him fall, he got up immediately and continued to walk towards hopkins for the rest of the round. he didn't seem hurt by it, maybe he was a little more cautious for the first few rounds but he was still the aggressor in every round of the fight.

Have you ever been sitting on the couch, watching -- of all things, professional wrestling -- and found yourself saying to yourself "This is the stupidest thing I've ever seen?"

Yeah, well, that's how I feel when listening to Hopkins' version of the fight.

Good point. Actually my daughter is seven and she asks me why they always make white people look like the bad people on TV. My response to her is far to in depth to post here.

Not really I used to get a kick out of pro wrestling when WCW was hot back in 1998.

Pro wrestling is virtually the only mainstream tv show where whites are portrayed as strong.

Tarver wants to fight Calzaghe. That would be a great match up for Joe. Calzaghe says he is only fighting one more time, although I think and a lot of people think that he should fight two more times. One more in America where he can really put on a 'proper' show because he didn't really manage that against Hopkins. And then his last fight in a packed Millenium Stadium in Cardiff as a nice exit?
