what makes Jesse's performances truly phenomenal is the fact that, aside from his eye-popping numbers, he is doing this with only marginal talent around him as anyone can see.

he is an elite NFL Feature Back playing in exile because of his skin color.

Sorry for the multiples posts, but check out this story....

Helping shatter the myth that (white guys) Canucks can't run

Jesse Lumsden wants to erase a frustrating stereotype.

In a league dominated by import (black) running backs, there seems to be a stigma that American (black) tailbacks are automatically better than Canadian (white) runners.

"That's a stereotype that needs to be dropped," said Lumsden, a high-profile Canadian (white) player.

"If you are a good running back, you are a good running back. Period. That is it.

"It doesn't matter (what's your skin color) where you are from. It doesn't matter what language you speak. If you can run the ball, you can run the ball."

By leading the CFL in rushing entering this week, Lumsden might be helping future Canadian (white) kids get a more serious look.

"I hope so," said the Hamilton Tiger-Cat running back.

"Personally, I think it's ridiculous. There have been a ton of Canadian (white) backs that have had success.

"I've been very lucky where I have had good coaching and good mentors growing up in the game.

"There are a ton of talented Canadian (white) kids out there that can do what I am doing. It's just that there is that bit of a stereotype that needs to be eliminated."

Of the top 20 rushers in the CFL, Lumsden is the only (white) non-import.

of course, the color part is added by me, but gosh, how precise does it look? still, everything on this article looks good and so true. thats a shame we can't talk about skin color just like we talk about nationality.

Here's an interesting thread about Lumsden on a redskins fan forum. The original poster was discussing Lumsden's success in the cfl, and the issue of race and white running backs. Not suprisingly though, many buy into the caste belief that "if he was good enough, he'd still be there." One person even insinuated that the cfl must not be very good if the leading rusher couldn't make 3rd string for the skins.

One poster, referring to his belief of black athletic superiority, said he only sees black guys at basketball courts "dunking and blowing buy guys." What about white lacrosse players that blow buy guys? Or what about white players in college or NBA who are obviously better than some guys playing on the courts. Also even if blacks were more naturally talented, they're obviously not so much superior that they get 100% of all starting rb and cb positions. Check out the thread:

I see that he was still the leader in receiving yards, and also the QB, Maas, was the leader in rushing yards. So the white QB and white running back were 1 and 2 in rushing yards.

Something great is happenning in canada, and in the CFL.
Jesse is actually becoming THE face of the CFL, as I preticted. He is on all shows, they actually created a highlight just of him on the front page of the cfl.ca website, he is the only player who got such.

Jesse's own highlight

ti-cats GM is talking to him about a contract extension, something that could prevent him of getting another chance to the NFL next year. thats great, give him a million for 5 years, the guy's got some records to break here, he can't waste precious years warming bench as a 2nd fullback/special team demon down the border.

edit: he actually is the 2nd player to get his own highlight, the other player is milt stegall, who recently broke the all-time record for TDs in the cfl... well I guess he deserved it too

Gi-15, what is the racial makeup of the starting Montreal CFL team? Just curious. I spent some time in Montreal in '03 and it was way different than any city I've seen here in the US. Edited by: Colonel_Reb

Thanks for the info! Would you say that is more or less white than the average CFL team?

there is usually 2 white receivers starting, but dave stala is on a kind of PUP list right now.
Mathieu Proulx is the second string safety, but he was eastern division rookie of the year 05, but was hit by the injury bug since. In a perfect world he would start at safety and current safety Étienne Boulay would be starting at halfback(the guy covering the slotback). Boulay was a very successful CB at UMass(or university of maine, I don't remember) and was eastern division rookie of the year in 06.

I'd say it is a little more white than the average cfl team, but not by a whole lot. It's more friendly to quebec's CIS product, who are most of the time white kids.

edit: Boulay played at U of new hampshireEdited by: Gi-15

Gi-15, Boulay was a free safety for the most part at the University of New Hampshire. He was a very productive player who I recall getting quite a few interceptions. I believe he wore #24 at UNH. He had good speed.

In a league that close to 50-50 white/black, why are so many QBs black. Do they really like taking all these poor Quarterbacks. Wouldn't they get better ratings with some white QBs. I checked cfl.ca, and under players and then Quarterbacks, out of the first ten quarterbacks, Eric Crouch was the only white.

I think asking the question is awnsering it.

the real question is why there is no canadian quaterback on ANY rosters. We are used to the wider field and the shorter balls. the most talented canadian QB I witnessed myself is Mathieu Bertrand, who was drafted in the 5th round by the alouettes after a stellar college carreer here in Laval, a 6'3 210 pound guy who was very mobile and could throw the ball 70 yards, with BOTH arms (witnessed it myself during one of our camp, where he was a guest coach), but is now playing FB for the eskimos, and is year in year out the leading tackler on special teams for his team.

Black QBs tend to make better scramblers (mostly because they have to be because of their lack of thinking ability). The CFL is a wide field that favours mobile QBs over pocket passers. The Greatest QB in CFL history was Doug Flutie.

I would have liked to see Bertrand get a shot, at least. Would be nice to have a QB in the CFL that doesn't take 1-2 years to get used to the rules before playing.

a ''bad day'' for Lumsden lol but not so bad..
8carry for 38yards and 2 catches for 62 ysrds + one rushing touchdown
I actually saw that Hamilton/Edmonton game on tape Delay. Once I found out Lumsden was the Hamilton back I couldn't turn it off. THey also have a fantastic white receiver named Bauman who was continually running by the black corner trying to cover him. It was silly actually. (Unfortunately, Bauman dropped a 40 yard pass with a minute to go that would have put Hamilton in FG range for a win

But the announcer was totally talking up Jesse. he said something along the lines of "this guy is amazing, you cna't stop him!" Bascially Jesse dislocated his shoulder and still had a TD, PLUS he had a 10-15 yard run where he broke a tackle and ran over someone too. It was sweet. ALL with a dislocated shoulder. Awesome. Makes me prouder, i can't lie. He is awesome. How the NFL won't give him the time of day is amazing to me.

From a marketing standpoint, even if you are a racist and don't believe in his talent, you can't deny he'd be a crowd pleaser and sell jerseys, seats, TV ratings etc. If I was an also ran NFL team, I can't think of a better move. However, after watching him teh other day, his talent is premier too, so it's not like he'd be a stooge.

Come on NFL, get with the program and pull your heads out of your asses. THis is asinine!

I have a feeling if Lumsden gives the NFL another shot he will want a real contract and may get one from a desperate team. If he wins a MVP in the CFL he may get one like Moon or Dieter Brock. Shoot if the Cardinals signed Emmitt.....

Great news!
The ti-cats jsut traded Jesse's black back-up, mr outside, corey holmes. This means more carries for the big canadian back.

yeah, about that: i was just looking at some stats and atm Jesse's 3rd in rushing in the league (some 50 yards behind the leading guy and with 1 game less afaik) and what struck me as weird is that he has by far less carries than any of the top 5 backs... leading two have almost twice as much as him.

give him more carries coach!
